Improve the visual quality of fights
« on: January 18, 2006, 11:45:09 pm »
I\'m one of the character animator, although I shoudn\'t call myself like this because I done a very few animations since I become WTB member of the team.

I\'m searching for martial art expert or enthusiast who could help me improve visual quality of fights by offer me references of various sword (and other weapons) combat techniques and who could also become critic of my animation.

I would think that anything you do for the team should only be viewed by team members until officially released for the public? Art isn\'t usually \"leaked\" like that, or at least hasn\'t in the past :>

Well I\'m seeking someone who really know such things to help me with animation. I\'m not going to publish anything to public, of course.

My mistake, it was just your phrasing of \"become a critic\" that lead me to my conclusion ^^

I would generally second white_slayer\'s suggestion: watching movies in slow motion or pausing during action scenes could help out a lot.

Beyond that, googling around for some action poses leads to interesting stuff, and there are stock photos in various places (such as this dA account) that could be an aid.

This is a game in alpha development, not a Christmas present.

Tough :)

I agree, watch movies, sucker friends into doing movements were you can see them, and at all else, record yourself.

If you\'d like advice on looks and movments, I can help a bit. I have a first-stripe Red in Tae Kwon Do, so I would be able to help pinpoint technique issues and give advice on how the body moves. And I\'m a sword fiend although I\'ve never managed to take lessons, the Bo-Staff being my weapon.

Why should I speak, if no one speaks?  Why should I approach, if no one approaches?  Why should I hear, if no one hears?

Well I found great site with short videos of swordcombats -
http://www.thearma.org/
and I also get a chance to obtain Medieval Swordsmanship book (great material), but I\'m missing good foundations of other weapon combat styles (polearms, halberts, knifes, warhammers, etc.). Someone who really know this stuff and recommend me some book or website could help me a lot.

Heh, that reminds me of the origin of the animations in the original prince of persia game. Mechner simply filmed his brother doing things with a stick...

Edit: I misspelled Mechner ;_; *gets out nine tailed whip and hits himself over and over again*

And animations in Prince of Persia (in the very old version) are just perfect!  :)
