A strong penalty, sure.  But people sure as heck didn\'t die too often.  If there was risk, people didn\'t take it.  It really gets your heart pumpin\'.

Still, I very much enjoy the way this game treats death, but I can\'t agree with the idea of having \'riddles\' as a means of returning to the living world.  What happens when someone figures the riddle out?  From then on, you\'d always know the answer, and death wouldn\'t hold the meaning it did.

I wasn\'t suggesting a single riddle.  I was suggesting hundreds, thousands, however many they can come up with, really.  Whatever, it doesn\'t need to be a straight riddle anyway.  Something to make it feel like you aren\'t just plodding back to the diving board, so to speak.

I know, I understand what you meant.  I was just, more or less, trying to make a point about the severity of death.

Personally, I like how there was talk about there being a whole other world in the death realm, with quests, balance, structure, etc...

my feeling on this matter is:

when i was a newb and died, i hated having to wonder around the DR trying to find my way out. In fact i lost my first character to the DR, but i eventually learned how to get out with my second(far more time into) character. I dont die nearly as often, because the DR makes you fear in game death.

that is what a death penalty should be in a game
losing items everytime you die would be horrible
that would be one of the worst things to do in an rpg game
death is inevitable

example:
I used to play \'Diablo II\' pretty much religiously, i had my high lvl characters(ladder, hate hackers) lvl 95 barbarian and what not. No longer amused by being able to die, i created a \'Hardcore Character\'(if you die, it is permenant).
this character died at lvl 23... and it pissed me off
but i eventually improved my skills for hardcore
i had a lvl 86 Necromancer(summoner)
i went to do an uber went through the portal and lag hit me like a brick wall and i was taken down fast
i did not lose all my items because i played private games (i gamed with friends and had a plan to loot for all the items so as not to lose them)
that was a choice
i stopped playing hardcore after that
because it wasnt worth it
i gave my items away and went back to normal
there can be a simple problem with a new patch or with the server
that could kill you
why should someone be punished for dying in a game?
they shouldnt....

(wow that dragged on, i am sorry for such a long and mostly pointless post)  :)

Then why even include death in the game?

What kind of question is that??? Why have punishment in a game? Dude...

Why have rules in sports?
Why have hit points?
Why have  punishment?

Cuz it\'s challenging.

NateBeast, you chose to play hardcore, Blizzard does not make you do that.  If it pissed you off, you should have weighed it out to start with.  Like you said, you will die, it\'s inevitable.  So you shouldn\'t get attached to hardcore characters.  I know I never did on my level 84 amazon.  I just made a new character, a windy druid and kept playing hardcore.
