There\'s a librarian in the Death Realm who works there part-time. (IE, whenever he\'s online.) He mounted a quest, in which the thread can be seen here
But other than that, no you can\'t read any of the books in the Death realm library, that I know of.

There are plans for it, or so I hear... I think the deathrealm will eventually have quests, npcs to fight, places for people to explore, perhaps even some crafting, mining, etc. It will also be a lot more challenging to escape than it is now. However, these things are in the future, so for now you\'ll have to deal with it as-is (which is a vast improvement over the original deathrealm which was about half the size of the current one).

Players could choose in the future to remain in the Death Realm and make it their home - so in a way it could be a complete and total afterlife, but it doesn\'t have to be permanent. In the future the Death Realm will expand to become just that - an entire realm, a whole other world - so there will be plenty to keep everyone occupied :)

It\'s not really an afterlife so much as a different plane of existence.... I think that there is death in the game of another, more permanent kind, but the relationship isn\'t explained all that well.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as \'heaven\' in Planeshift. And, the Death Realm is far from \'Hell\'.

(Blurbing on in response to Zanzibar\'s post)
I think that permanent death and non-permanent death is explained in a few ways...
Those who can find themselves out of the Death Realm get a second chance at life. Those who cannot, in essence, \'die\'.

Now, how does this relate to our characters in Planeshift? Our characters are different than the common rabble, for lack of a better term.
If you are not some sort of warrior or mage, you would be at least a skilled crafter of some sort. And because of that, by offering a precious magical item or some-sort, or having some endurance and determination, players will be able to escape the death realm, with varying difficulty.

When it looks to be in about beta stage ;) \"When?\" is a very hard question to answer with PlaneShift, since it is entirely a hobby project, and the developers work on it in their free time. I would think that the next version, Steel Blue, will be closer to beta than anything else.
