Rats, RATS, RAAAATTTSS
« on: January 25, 2006, 08:24:48 am »
So I am quite new here, I\'ve been playing for a few days and I\'ve killed about 3,000 rats.  I\'ve read the official FAQS and one of the supplementary FAQS, and have read a lot of posts on here before composing this little post.

First off, some good stuff:
I think this game is pretty amazing for an alpha test made by people from all over the world.  Really, I\'m impressed and I think it will only get better and better with time.

However, this game is really hard to get into for a new player.  I do ask a lot of people things and I\'m amazed and delighted at how helpful the community is here, but I really don\'t know what to do except kill rats.  I accepted a quest, but found that I needed 750 tria (the lamp oil quest) just to complete it.  750 tria, in laymen\'s terms, is about four million rat tails.  I really really wish there was some kind of initiation or set of things for new players to do that extended beyond rat killing.  Also I went to the tavern and nobody there offered me anything to do.

I enjoy this game, I would like to grow with it and learn more about it, but just a humble suggestion would be:  Help new players learn about the world with a initiation-style quest.    That\'s all.

I also wanted to volunteer to help with editing and writing.  If that sort of service is needed.  Thanks!

Hiya! :)

You do know that rats aren\'t the only critters that populate the world? Clackers would be a good second step, and then try Tefusang, and perhaps Trepors. It will be easier with a good blade, which the rats could help you acquire.

As for a beginner\'s quest, I definitely agree. But the quest system is also being worked on, tweaked, bugged, fixed, improved, etc., so expect a newbie tutorial when things are a bit more stable.

There inbetween are also Gobbles, but only if you dare to descend deeper into the sewers.

HINT: People who are not afraid of the darkness can find a nice alternative path from one important point in Hydlaa to another - imagine the possibilities regarding roleplaying...

Gobbles drop next to no loot.

Move straight to clackers.  They\'re tougher, but they pay dramatically better than rats.  They\'re also easier to find since you don\'t have to explore the depths of the sewer to find an empty spawn point, and they tend to be in larger groups.

FOUR MILLION!? What, are rats tails in the negative numbers now? Last I checked, they were worth about 6 tria each..

750/6 != 4,000,000..

I believe there are some good quests for newbies around, you just have to find them :P

Try to remember that not all creatures are the same toughness.  Tefusang range from almost accomodating to extremely dangerous for the new guy, and pay off the same regardless of their ability to fight.  That applies to all the critters I believe.  And besides, nothing says you have to lug around rat tails, if you want to only loot rat hides, for instance.  It\'s your back after all, you decide what you want to put on it.

This is sort of... uh... yeah, nevermind.

So a kind soul gave me a bunch of stuff which allowed me to train a bit and get my character a little stronger.  I think I\'ll be able to take on some bigger things soon.

I still can\'t find any quests but I\'ll look harder.

Thanks for all the help!

A lot of NPCs that gave quests had to be moved, due to a massive bug/exploit that handed out insane items and amounts of tria to players. Hopefully this will be taken care of soon, but in the meantime finding quests may be difficult.

I\'ve encountered some of these people.  One guy had 20,000,000 tria and he just handed me a few thousand for kicks.

I have worked pretty hard on my character, but I wouldn\'t mind if everything were suddenly wiped.  I know it\'s too early for there to be a microeconomy in the game, but it\'s kind of ridiculous how worthless money is.

I also trained my guy to level 9 axe without realizing that it\'s virtually impossible to find axes (one of the devs told me that).

Also I think creatures should spawn at random waypoints to stop Super Demi-god PC\'s from farming them.  It\'s impossible to roleplay around something like THAT.

in the arena the gladiators do tend to drop them... the problem of course is to drop the gladiator first, but then, its pretty easy to find an experienced player to do that for you. Only took me one question, and i didn\'t even ask him for one. Ofc thats not an improved axe but its still an axe. Besides, did you ever try to find daggers? now those are REALLY hard to come by.

Or, if you don\'t feel like hunting at all, you can always invest in a mining pick, train in the gold fields, then go to the place where you mine diamonds.  You get experience and you can sell the diamonds for about 80 tria a pop.

Buy daggers and armor and stuff, then go kill Tefusangs in the sewers. They are fun.

Being a Dwarf from mining stock, I decided to try to get some training cash by mining.  I\'ve had loads of fun exploring and figuring out just where to drop my pick.

I\'v managed to find Gold, Platinum, Coal and Iron but haven\'t found a diamond vein.  I have a sneaking suspicion it\'s near where I found 3 of the above but there are two tunnels that my diminutive self cannot even squeeze through.

I just wish the coal and iron had a selling price higher than 0 tria, as I haven\'t found anything else to do with them.....Yet.
