XMMS bug?

I seem to have a consistent problem with my computer crashing when I run Planeshift and XMMS at the same time.

I run the 2.6.12 kernel with Debian, XMMS 1.2.10, and I have a gig of ram. I have sound turned off on PS. Frequently, but not always, when I log in and start PS, if I then start playing music with XMMS I have about 10 minutes before my entire system freezes. I can\'t even switch terminals!

I love my music. What should I do?

I am not sure it helps you, but you can try. Open psclient.cfg and comment out everything that has something to do with sound, like System.PlugIns.iSoundRender, System.PlugIns.iSoundLoader and System.PlugIns.iSoundManager.

I am using quite the same configuration:
- Debian(SID/unstable), Kernel 2.6.14
- XMMS 1.2.10 - using ALSA
- Latest PS with Sound disabled in pssetup

No problems here.
My client crashes sometimes, but i think it\'s related to alpha-stage :D

I always have xmms running when I am working on PS.  Normally when PS starts it reports that sound device is already in use and I don\'t get any sound in PS ( which is acceptable ).  

Do you get the same problem if you start playing music first in xmms and then start PlaneShift?

I always play with music and sound on ps and have no problems (related to the sound). But then again i dont use xmms.

All your problems are normal, to fix it :
First, throw away your Debian and use a Slackware,
Second, get a rid of XMMS and use amaroK.

All will be good after that.



More seriously : maybe the full duplex can be your friend here.

If you have a decent sound card you can have sound in both with no trouble - you just need a card that supports hardware mixing.   .... well... if you have a crappy card (i.e. onboard AC97, or ES1371) you can enable software mixing I believe but I don\'t know if there is a performance hit or not.  The SB! Live (EMU10K) card is a decent and really cheap card.

How does one do what you are talking about? I\'d like to be able to have multiple sounds going on :(


EDIT: I\'ve got an Asus Z71 laptop. I think the card is Intel with a Realtek core or something along those lines (I odn\'t know much about sound cards).

Well, acraig, it turns out that starting XMMS before PS just postpones my computer crashing. So, still looking for a solution.

Induane - I can play sound from both. I have the sound turned off on PS, because if I don\'t then I hear music from both at the same time, which is confusing, although sometimes an interesting effect. ;)

It seems like a memory leak, but I suspect now that it might be XMMS\'s fault, because I just had the same problem happen when running XMMS and Blender together (without PS).

Does anyone have a suggestion for a different program I should be using for netcasting while playing PS? (Without changing to Slackware. I don\'t know what you\'re thinking, Baston. Debian is the real Linux!) What is amaroK? I only use XMMS for audio streaming; would amaroK be better? What do you mean by \"the full duplex?\"

By \"netcasting\" you mean internet radio and that sort of thing, don\'t you?


Rhythmbox is the audio player that I usually use, but the mp3 codec stuff isn\'t working* so I\'ve been using xmms.


*I can\'t remember how I did it i my Fedora 3 install (now use 4).



EDIT: I can use Gxine for internet radio type stuff, you might like ot try that.
