a newb question that didn't match the requirements of the newb b
« on: December 16, 2002, 01:54:17 am »
Im currently downloading this game.  I accidentally stumbled onto it and am a bit confused.  How can it be completley free?  Am I missing something?  and how does this game stack up next to other mmorpgs?  like asheron\'s call (which I like) and everquest (which I hate).  Any info you can give will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

It doesnt stack up to other mmorpgs because its not even NEAR finished, and is nothing like them

As for the free thing, it\'s going to be totally FREE, how is that hard to understand?

Actually take pie and add 4,312.99 cents, the cost of a server rounding the world okay? follow us so far? now take around 10,000 add to that because of dev team money okay? now take all that and multiply by 0 and you should get 0 and that means 0 cost, 0 cost means free, if your still confused then go outside and run in the highway, jump onto someones car and ask them, cause i dont know how to help.

I certainly hope not everyone in the game is a prick like you two.

Ok now for the economics lesson.  Servers cost money.  Technicians cost money.  Websites cost money.  Following me still??  (I doubt you are, but I will continue).  What I was curious about, is how/why would a company create and maintain an online game with no financial gain.

I hope I kept the words good and short for you two.  I also choose to use some incorrect grammer and spelling so that you could understand it.

Have a great day, jerks

Id rather be sensitive than dense.  No worries though, I think we both misunderstood something.  No hard feelings

Well, Talad\'s ( The head of PlaneShift )  ISP hosts the main website for him. I\'m assuming that he pays a little bit for that but not too much.  Most ISP offer web hosting along with their online package.

Second,  we are not a company. We are a rag-tag bunch of people working in our spare time to put this together.  Our motivation is to create a great game that people can play online for free.   So the financial part isn\'t really a factor.    At the moment our server has been donated by the people at http://www.gamiix.com  ( and we are very thankful to them for that :) ).

This is not to say that we do not have some financial concerns for the future.  As you say servers and bandwidth cost money, but our long term plans are to find ways that people can pay ( if they want to! ) that will not affect their game or playing experience.  At the moment it is not a big concern since we are well within our means with the current hardware available to us.

Plus you will have to excuse some of the people on this board.  Since the new version hasn\'t been released yet they are a little frantic to find some activity :)

No, they won\'t, because people NEED TO READ the planeshift main page and other posts before they post things like this, People come here just because they see the word free and start drooling on themselves, This board is for Planeshift discussions, the newbie forum is for introductions.

Hey damoocow, welcome and dont let certain individuals mar your views of the great community here ^^...

and keirn your first reply could very easily come over as nasty, when i read it thats teh impressions i got  :] ... use a few emoticons or smiles to bring across the true emotional stance of your posts  :P .

and ignore Link, he found a hat some where with the word community spokes person written on it and thinks it was put there for him to find it and use... instead its wide frilly brim and purple fabric make him come across as a bit of a jackass... then again is it truely the hats fault?
