Make the client as light as possible with information and let the server do everything. Macros are easy but harder when you have a full screen that changes sizes so probably win xp and 2000 users will have the advantage with macros.

My question is how strong is planeshift server/client against memory finders, packet edits ect?

Umm, can\'t say that I\'ve written any MMORPG\'s of my own, but I\'m pretty sure that if you have the server doing everything then you won\'t be able to support very many people.  Either that or the servers will be really slow.  Just a guess, anyway  ?(

Cheating takes fun out of playing a game, for example, how long can you play 1st person shooter in a god mode. Maybe for some of these people it\'s just a challenge of hacking the program, and if they do it to vulchers like Verant I don\'t care, but here the Devs are putting in their time and expertise, getting absolutly nothing except of joy of watching people enjoy their game, and u want to crack it just for a lousy faster casting spell. It just doesn\'t seem right to me.

So if u want to cheat, I don\'t think you should be a part of this comunity.

Just my 2 cents

I am asuming this is a general comment not directed to anyone specific in this thread.

I think that is a pretty obvious point.  Anyone that would cheat, probably wouldn\'t be a \'part\' of the game community.  Cheaters in MMOGs are usually \'munchkins\' (see typical DND definition) that get their jollies off by hurting other people and feeling superior.  This is also called \'grief playing\' and is typically perpetuated by pre-pubescent \"script-kiddies\" that have no interest in role-playing or the game community itself.

From what I\'ve seen in other games, the actual \'hacking\' is done by some \'grief\' guild to gain advantage or a cypherpunk for the hell of it.  The cheaters that you usually see ride on the hacker\'s coat tails and use the \'scripts\' they make (thus, the script-kiddies term).

Much in the same way that linux is more secure than windows, Planeshift is going to end up very secure.

This happens through good design and through vigilance by everyone about detecting new exploits, so the coders can issue patches.

I feel very good about our overall security design, but things like malicious net messaging, etc. are going to have to be found on a case-by-case basis.

Also, I would say right now all this is viewed as low priority by the team, since we just want to get a playable game up and running and make it as nice as possible.  The security is a moving target and something which will continuously improve as we go--not a one shot deal on which we have to hit the bullseye on the first try with.
