Unofficial Fanart Challenge #1
« on: February 03, 2006, 07:15:50 am »
I\'ve decided to begin holding monthly challenges in order to get you peoples doing stuffs!  These challenges are completely UN-official .  They\'re not for the devs to use, nor will they.  They\'re to get you guys practice doing dev-like things, in a PlaneShift setting.  Each entry will receive a tender loving review by myself and Cherppow (and depending on the response, maybe some guest celebrity judges in later challenges) in our quest to decide on a winner.  Enough boring stuff, to the challenge!

2d Challenge 1

Objective: Create and illustrate an architectural style for the \"Gobble\" creature already prominent throughout the sewers in Hydlaa.  In the wild, gobbles live in swampy areas in more primitive dwellings.  They enjoy \'shiny\' things, which they like decorating their structures with.

Format: Entries can be digital or traditional (traditional entries will obviously need to be scanned).  They should fill an 8.5x11, or A4, sheet of paper (or similar size digitally).  They can be drawings of one, or multiple (or partial) buildings, just so long as we get a good idea of the style you are going for.

(big thanks to underthemoon for helping me get ideas for this one, I do appreciate it)

3d Challenge 1

Objective: Model AND texture an entrance for a dungeon.  Also, make a name for the dungeon which fits the theme of your entrance.  Try to make the entrance more interesting than a cave opening.  It must look scary and uninviting (a place you wouldn\'t likely go by choice).

Format: Entries may use no more than 1000 triangles, and a 1024x1024 texture (this can, and should be, broken up to accomodate texturing the multiple objects your scene will have, so you may have, for example, 3 512x512 maps, and 4 256x256). The model should include enough landscape/background to fill up an 800x600 render, which you will submit along with an 800x600 wireframe of the scene.  You should also submit your concept work (not required, but highly recommended).

Deadline : February 28th, midnight GMT

Submitting entries : Entries should be posted in this thread with some sort of heading labeling it as such.  Please keep your entries limited to one post, and edit it as you see fit (before the deadline of course).

Judges : Cherppow and I

Prizes : fame, glory, undisputed awesomeness, a badge to put in your sig if you so choose, and a year\'s webhosting from jose (can I enter my own contest?  I kinda want to win now...)

Please remember, the whole idea behind this is to give you all the opportunity to practice your art skills, and to receive feedback on your work.  It is simply an initiative on my part to get you all arting it up in a PS setting.  If you have any questions, feel free to post in this thread, or PM me.

How long until they make you a moderator for this forum, eh ArcaneFalcon? yes, I will sear today  :P

While I don\'t think I have the skills to participate, I will add to the pool of prizes (fame, glory, and undisputed awesomeness? gasp!). If you win, I\'ll donate a year of webhosting. You\'ll get your site at http://yoursite.ps-mc.com/, a set of forums if you so desire (for a guild, perhaps?), and yourname@ps-mc.com or yourname@yoursite.ps-mc.com email address.

Happy arting!

Not sure if anyone has started with this, but I have.

It\'s not done obviously, I\'ll just update this post every now and then to show it building up. Hopefully there ARE other\'s who will compete and do better than I, since I suck.

Looking good, Archon. Since nobody else has made a spiffy Gobble achitecture picture yet, I might work on one... and if mine wins, someone will have to go and throw bricks at this forum\'s artists >.>

No, this is not an attempt to bump the thread >.>

People just don\'t read the stickies, do they?

So here it is. I should have used more time though...

..... that part above this text in the image is normally not shown coz it is inside and underwater

I have a couple questions for you. Well, a question and a suggestion.

1. Are the 2d and 3d entries judged seperately? So in all it\'s two different competitions?

2. For a prize to add, the winner of each could be a special guest judge in the next contest. Just a thought.

I hope to Jebus someone else enters in the 3d contest.. I don\'t want to win just by default from lack of competitors... Sad way to win the first contest. *sniff*.

Induane\'s post was actually posted by me, I didn\'t realize I was under his name until it was posted... My bad.

Induane/Archon:
1. Yes, they are essentially 2 different contests.  There will be 2 sets of winners and everything.
2. I\'ll think about it. :)

Don\'t worry about more people joining.  I think they\'re just waiting until the deadline is a bit closer (we all do it...except for Archon apparently).  If nobody else does, then I\'ll have to set some ulbernauts loose in the fan art forums. >:|

Donguri:
That was part of the reason I chose the gobbles.  It\'s pretty open ended (except for the fact that it will be somewhat rustic/swampish) so it leaves you plenty of options to get creative.  Draw me something sweet. :)  (and by sweet, I don\'t mean valentine\'s day kinda \"awww\" sweet, I mean face-melting \"holy flippin\' sweet!\" sweet).

what do they look like and stuff?

Are they mean,  scared,  helpfull, greedy.. etc. ?

Or are those things also open ?

Geeze Kintall, give everyone else a chance to win... J/K, but that is awesome. I could definitely see gobbles walking around in those buildings.

Quite nice, realistic textures too.

The only things I find odd are the two rectangles in the middle... they make me think of teeth, but more rabbit teeth than dungeon teeths. I think a fang-shaped handle for each door would be spiffy, but that\'s just me :D

Good work so far!

@Kintall: looks good, but the perspective is a little odd. That back tower looks like it\'s leaning over, for instance. Of course I can\'t draw in perspective at all, so I\'m not the authority on it :P
