Messed up forum piles
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:13:26 pm »
Next time there is a week long series of crashes so the game won\'t actually run without going 2 steps forward and 1 1/2 back, the forum moderators could take some time to clean up the forums. It takes hours to find correct technical advice, and if your situation is a little different from what is there it takes even longer. Maybe if someone could find the time to delete all the reduntant posts and incorrect advice, so that only the correct replies are left--?

Of the 40 hours I\'ve spent playing Planeshift3D, more than 30 has been reading the forums or the manual, and then the information is incomplete (or even inaccurate).

[On a side note:  Being an artist I really appreciate all the time and effort artists do to make their art seem excellent (such as the lighting effects that create the \"3d\" of the planeshift game--without them, it is just 2 d (and the d could stand for dumb).]

30 hours of reading a manual and some stickies is a lot, dude... I know the game is hard at some points, but surely not that hard to spend 30 hours of your time like that o.O

And uhm I think cleaning the forum is a little bit toooo much work, don\'t you?  ;)

You have to be kidding :) We have so many sticky threads with the information you need to solve the more common problems, and plenty of clues that will help you solve the not-so-common ones. And is it really that hard to use the Search feature to see if something less-than-common was posted about long ago? I really think you\'re overreacting.

I haven\'t seen any incorrect advice - there are guesses and suggestions, but never blatant false answers. Maybe you could pinpoint a few specifics?

You should\'ve seen the forums before Karyuu and I cleaned up the stickies...  :|  There were only a handful of \"server is down\" messages this time, and they didn\'t last that long.  I\'m actually quite pleased with it this time \'round.  It\'s usually closer to a dozen... after deletions.

If any of the tech help stickies are ever missing something, or even if you just have a suggestion, PM me here or on IRC.

Izzy: actually, I don\'t find the game hard, but immense (especially since I\'ve never done rpg or online).  My forum searches have been for relight issues, pssetup issues, and newbie issues. (The first two are killers for mac use).

Karyuu: the stickies are definitely a GREAT help--I had no issues with getting started because of them, but if they weren\'t therre and you did a search for the information--what would you find? Also, think about all the on going jabber at the end of some of those stickies. Still, STICKIES ARE GREAT! (try searching for relight, gui, deathrealm, or a combination.)

Dave: Yeah, as I looked at some of the older posts that turn up in a search--it definitely used to be worse--but here is part of what I\'m trying to communicate: all those old threads about old bugs (that are no longer) on even a differrent client (so to speak).  I\'ll PM you as I find them--now--but most the stickies are good for me.

**maybe we could copy the stickies, wipe the boards, paste the stickies back in, then start clean with the good mods you have now. Also, as has happened to me, maybe when the mods take the time to respond to a redundant post they could delete it and send it back to them as a PM instead of just leaving it there to clutter the search response again.**

And what is with the search engine? I search \"relight deathrealm\" I get some responses that don\'t seem to have either of the words anywhere in the thread.

Yeah, well we\'ve been using the forums for a while; old stuff is in here.  There\'s really nothing wrong with that.  (restrict your search to recent dates if you need to)  The tech help stickies are what we need to keep up-to-date.  Essentially, I\'d like to have them have all the information someone would commonly need to search for in them.

I really don\'t see any reasons for wiping the board and \"starting clean,\" to be honest. I also see no on-going jabber at the end of stickies, so this is too something I\'d like examples of ;)

DaveG gave a brilliant suggestion - the search feature can restrict the results to display only the more recent items.

As for deleting redundantly created threads and sending a PM, I\'ve tried that a few times - and didn\'t like the results at all. Posters would then PM me asking for help, and even though I\'d try to send them replies as best as I could, I became a sort of one-person-tech-support. And it wasn\'t PMs only, it became emails. I hated it :P I really adore helping people, but I certainly don\'t want to deal with it in such a form.

I already got your thoughts on why not to delete, I was on my way back to correct--you already replied. Another good reason to leave it is so that other people don\'t keep posting--like with the bug from the new combat time out item. There would be many posters and you\'d have to respond to all of them. **So, go ahead, lock \'em and leave \'em.
