getting right click to work
« on: February 08, 2006, 05:43:23 am »
The following is from the link in the guide::

\"Command Click didn\'t work for me, but heres what I did:

I edited planeshift_folder/data/options/mouse_def.xml to this:

Quote:

The mapping is now different from the PC version, but it\'ll work for one button mice. \"

Changing this file did not affect the mouse settings set in game through options at all--not one bit, and the file is still altered.

The options panel sets it for some mouse functions, but those settings don\'t affect the \"right click\" necessary for resetting the shortcuts menu.

I cannot change shortcuts, because I can\'t get a right click--even tried altering the file for them, like this one says to do.
It does not work.

So, has there been a change? How do we get \"right click\" on a mac now?

***Should we be changing the file  /mouse.xml  instead?***

\"mouse_def.xml\" is the default template to which the settings are reset.

\"mouse.xml\" is the current setting.

And just a side note: Logitech mouse drivers support mice with more than 1 button on a Macintosh, if you are willing and able to invest in a few more degrees of freedom.

You don\'t need any drivers to run any sort of mouse you\'d like on a mac.  Unfortunately for those who are in love with the single-button mouse, you can\'t do anything (yet) except use a two-button mouse if you want to get the context menus for some items.  I kind of like the uncompromising simplicity of a mac-mouse sometimes, but even Apple has essentially caved in to the market (in many ways) with the advent of the \"Mighty Mouse\".  Check it out:

http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/

Which, is, I can attest, a pretty kickass mouse.  If you want cheaper mice, go with logitech--they make rocksolid mice.  Don\'t install their drivers unless you have to, though, it\'s bloatish.

But that\'s just me.

xml and mouses

Yep! That is a mighty mouse: 4 button, programmable, with a button scroller. I wonder if the right-click still just sends the cont-click command. [Now if they could come out with that as a trackpad--then it could go into the books.]

As my introduction to computers came back to memory, I realized what LigH has said, which means HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING that the _def.xml would be changed evertime we update, whereas the .xml MIGHT stay the same. (Irregardless, probably should back up the changed files to replace them with every update.)

[I assume that I have to also rewrite the shortcuts.xml.]

Many of the XML files are created by the game and therefore are not updated when you update. As for the shortcuts thing, I\'m not sure what to do. Dfryer may know, but I have no clue. :(

Hmmm strange.
I use 2 different PC mouse with PS on my Mac (os x 10..4.) with no problem at all.

When you just have 3 button mouse DONT install any 3 part driver no need for it.

If you change the the \"mouse.xml\" make shure that you dont do it with the buildt in text editor, get a copy of BB edit. If you strange symbols in it, replace it.
But there shouldnt be any need for that, just use the options panel.

All the changes should remain after a upgrade (shortcuts.xml,mouse.xml).

Try this in mouse.xml:

Good luck.

change command
« Reply #6 on: February 09, 2006, 06:23:43 pm »
Why can\'t the command for access to editing the shortcuts just be changed to control+click or opt+click, so that the shortcuts can be edited by both mac and pc?

People like to play at hotspots--most laptops have track pads. I don\'t know what\'s on pc, but most mac tracks only have one button (and as far as I know, all the two button mice on mac have simply used the right button to send the cont+click command--but 10.4 may be different.)

i have previously replied to a post like this it is really simple just copy and paste

or change it so that context menu has button 1 modifier 2
this enables a control click which acts as the right click

No one in their right mind would continue to use the single button mouse, however if you are using one there is no reason you can\'t just go into the options and set your buttons to whatever you want.  You shouldn\'t need to edit the file manually.

Mouse settings in options does not affect the right-click necessary to edit shortcuts, the button bar, and whatever else is edited in this way.

Nor does editing the xml file.  The xml file you\'re talking about here is saved after editing the options.

For those things you mentioned, there is no way to change them without editing the code manually and recompiling.  (they really should be made configurable, too)

Um... that post doesn\'t have anything to do with getting the edit shortcuts, config, or control bar styles to be configurable.  The only new information there is:

That means that our graphics engine might have some built-in right-click hack, to compensate for Mac crap-mice, but none of our devs who use Macs (meaning, dfryer :P ) actually use a 1-button mouse.  If you spent the extra money to buy a Mac, dig through your couch to find an extra $3 and buy a real mouse.

Everything in that XML file is accessible via the options, and there\'s no need to edit it manually.  For the ones not in the options, I\'m telling you, there is no way to fix this without editing the code.  I found it fairly easy to make the shortcut window and control bar styles buttons use the same combo as the context menu (I did that to allow that button to do \"view\" in the inventroy, for the next release), but bringing up the config/menu for a window can\'t get to those binds.  Regardless, there\'s no real need to change those to anything other than right-click.

Edited and added:
I could probably rewrite the client to compensate for your crap-mouse, but like it or not, the standard computer has a keyboard and a two-button mouse.  It really should just be added to the minimum requirements.  If you\'re for some reason using a laptop you can get a portable one (I use one for my laptop sometimes), or someone can actually find out what this magical CS hack combo is.  ;)  (I\'ve been searching around, and I can\'t find anything about it.)

Gripen I have a couple of Macs, on my old Powerbook I use a \"no name\" optical mouse 3butt with scrollwheel.
No extra drivers needed. price aprox 10 euro.

Just buy one :-)

one-button mouse
« Reply #14 on: February 22, 2006, 08:42:00 am »
What I\'m taking away from this thread is that this game is unplayable on a Mac with a standard one-button mouse - is that true?

So far, I\'ve found no way to begin a chat with Harnquist to receive his quest - is there any work-around that would enable me to do so with my one-button mouse?

And thanks for suggestions to buy a different mouse, but having being unemployed for a while, it\'s not an option for me ATM...

Peace,
David
