a gamer's rant (not me)
« on: February 12, 2006, 03:37:05 am »
http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/games/manifesto.html
some of those topics don\'t quite apply to ps, I also disagree with a few, but lots of what is in there could result in improvements to ps after rolling a while inside the devs heads

ps:btw, not sure if this is already widelly known, so if necessary I would\'nt feel bad if it was deleted ( off course the mods would delet it anyway if necessary 8o)

to be honest i got bored of reading this after point 2 so i just gave up.  all i can say is the \'pointlesswasteoftime\' URL is a name well deserved in this case

not only that but he(im asuming the author is male) blatently contradicts himself serveral times;

he wants games to be challenging, but he doesnt want them to be so challenging he actually has to put in the dreaded effort.

he doesnt want to be left ammo starved, yet heaven forbid he finds a box of shells in an abandoned crate.

he wants developers to use the new HDD\'s included in the next gen consoles but doesnt want to hear the dreaded word \'patch\'

and as for the comment on released screen shots who has actually ever baught a game based on the quality of the CGI movies anyway?

And yet, how do you think they feel when they play a game where the heroine looks like this: [...]

Pretty darn good :) I honestly fail to see what the big deal about all that is, and frankly the whole \"guy defending women from the game industry\'s intentions\" is a sad and tiring little rant.

But overall, there was very little actual content on there, particularly useful content. It\'s just one guy blowing off some steam because he seems to have nothing better to do with his time. I think anyone here can write a better analysis. But it was amusing while it lasted ;)
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

yeah, I agree the guy(?) exagerated a little, something like a stand up comedy skit about the game industry, but behind all the flare he says many truths, many common complaints from gamers
and on the matther of contraditions I would have to look one by one, but lets get the ammo one for example, he says he likes having enough ammo to be fun, but he also asks for more creative ways for level design and \"power up\" placemet.

oh, and btw, I agree 100% with him in the matter of the invisible walls...

Hey I would blow steam too if I found myself always being the ONE hero who can save the world from onslaught\'s of baddies that killed other heroes and somehow im lucky enough because one of the hereos left this almighty weapon that the hero could not use himself because he fell in the same sitation as me.

Blowing steam is a sin, trying to make sense in a sense-less situation is not.

I enjoyed it.  Some good points maybe, but the hummor kept me reading... and dancing bunnies with clear a path for us... very random, but funny!

The truth of it is that console games are now more of a mature technology so the clever inavative stuff will take a back seat to the games at 14 year old mass market level.  If your one of those men who has two kids a wife a morgage and a mistress to keep happy then it is probably time to put down the *joy stick* and and get your enjoyment by watching them play the games.

That being said I still thought is was funny.

I think every game developer should be duct-taped to a chair and forced to read this...  If you disagree with anything in the \"Manifesto\", that\'s because you haven\'t played enough games to get bored with the generic garbage.  (You\'re probably also one of the people who doesn\'t like Katamari Damacy... evil.)  At some point the shiny-ness wow-factor wears off, and you realize 99.99% of the games that came out in the past few years are pure crap, or at best a mild, pretty, distraction.

Now, I haven\'t played as many games as a \"gamer\", largely because the only reason I have this computer I am now typing on, is that I won it in a random drawing.  I\'ve never had much money, and am now a broke-ass college student.  However, I\'ve played enough of a sampling from the days of Atari \'till now, and I can tell you:  \"It got good, it got better... it got bad, and now it\'s bad but really really shiny.\"  These fancy consoles and graphics cards could be used to make some great games... could.

The reason I actually like this article, is it\'s basically anything any person who has honestly played video games could write.  We\'ve never bothered to put it all down susinctly, and look at it, and realize how bad things have gotten.  If you don\'t agree with me, you haven\'t gotten over the novelty factor, yet.  (or, you\'re content with mindless repetition... mindless repetition... mindless repetition... mindless repetition... mindless repetition... mindless repetition... mindless repetition...)

It\'s also the reason I got (sucked) into PS.  The primary goal of the game is to create an immersive game world, for people to play in.  Not another hack and slash, and not a 3D pen and paper RPG, but an actual fun immersive game.

Well I would not go so far as to paint a picture of doom like Dave has done, but I was rather disapointed when I was watching a  Maddin football game tourny and the winner was a player who used the exact same play every single time.  I mean every single time.  Nothing other players could do would stop his very high percentage play from getting first downs.  I think it was a running play just to make it even more insulting.

Ditto.  :)  But, with some of their business practices in recent years (or lack thereof), I\'m getting a little ticked at them.  They can\'t seem to figure out how easy hype can win over idiots, and how much that really does impact things...

/me waits patiently for Twilight Princess...  :D

Hmm, we got hype, shiny, flashy, and repetitive.  You talking about the halo series?

This article is both the best article I read on this topic in quite some time and also the worst.  I mean, grammar people, grammar.

BTW, I\'m siding with the Dave-meister.

I liked it.  He contradicted himself, but esh, we all do that.  It isn\'t absolutely necessary, but having a woman look like an average woman in a video game would be refreshing.  Part of the reason I liked Half-Life in the first place was because you are basically a nerd, and not some ripped marine.

Yeah, like the real Perfect Dark.  Not this generic thing made by Rare\'s salvaged corpse.
