chat vs. moving
« on: February 17, 2006, 03:44:16 am »
One of the things that makes the game clumsy for me is moving while chatting. I /tell someone then try to turn and nothing. I walk off a cliff. This is because my arrow keys are still slaved to my chat window.

Is there any way to make the arrow keys default for moving unless you press ctrl or shift or something?

Just use a combination of keyboard commands, mouse run, and auto run.

Hi

I\'ve stumbled upon this many times too. Trying to walk after chatting, sends you scrolling through the previous chat commands. There\'s no actual indicator in which mode you currently are; you can see you\'re in chat mode from the blinking text cursor, but if you\'ve dragged the chat window bottom out of screen, it\'s out of sight. In my opinion, would be good to have a \"speaking stance\" animation for characters that chat. Not very high priority though.

Well, if we think more of the current situation. Autorun is ok, you can chat while moving, but you lack the ability to control your character movement. You can\'t turn, or stop moving before switching back to move mode. Would be good if you could still control your char movement with keys that are not needed in chat. eg. numpad arrows or mouse.
Another trick that I\'ve tried to quickly switch between chat and move is the \"toggle chat\" hotkey. (Hotkeys for other windows seem to work nicely) The chat window opens up, but as it enables the chat mode, you can no longer close the chat window, since (i guess) it registers all keypresses as chat, even the function keys. This too would be fixed if the chat would only catch alphabetical keys (plus /,!,?,...), while leaving unused keys available for other commands. The F keys don\'t type anything in the chat anyways.

Would reflect the reality too, you can walk, talk and take a turn in the same time.

How about making the arrow keys only to move the character, that would be their ONLY function. To scroll up and down on previous messages could be easily substituted with the \"Page up\" and \"Page down\" keys, and moving the cursor while typing could use  \"home\" and \"end\" as left and right. So when you\'re chatting the arrow keys would still move your character, and their functions on the chat text box would be taken over by the keys above mentioned. The alternative keys I give here are just an idea, they could be others, but I used those as an example because they make sense to me, and because almost all the other keys are actually beig used to type.

I don\'t know about programming, so I have no clue how easy this idea would be to implement, but it\'s just a suggestion.

another way to bring up chat would be to make / a hot key to jump you into chat. Then enter can get you out of chat. If you want to chat just type
/say and then your our of chat. If you just want to chat then you can use no command and then it stays in chat. you could use to just open the curser in chat.

also the r key doesnt seem to work most of the time. It doesn\'t auto reply to yoru last /tell half the time.

edit: Deleted when I realized I was saying the same thing Cherppow said about using F keys (F1, F2, F3...) as hotkeys to turn chat on and off.
