I actually prefer the lower 800x600  resolution for two reasons.

I grew up with games that were low-res.  800x600, 400x300.  Dos games and commodore 64 games.  I know that\'s not ultra old, but it\'s what I grew up with.

The other reason is that the higher resolution seems really sharp to me.  There are certain graphical things from having really sharp lines, especially at distance, that I find distracting.

I don\'t know, is there a way to have the higher resolution, but have everything look a bit softer?  Maybe some sort of focus or blur thing?  (besides playing with my glasses off, because then I can\'t read the chat)

I normally play at only 800x600, because I like it \"windowed\" instead of fullscreen.  Lets me get work done and when I see movement in the game window, I come check it out.

OMG! You spoke my thoughts there :D
I still play many old dos games as well as the old c64 and speccy games.

Nothing quite like 320x240 eh lol

I prefer playing PS in 800x600 (windowed) because it allows me to work on other things in the background... skype, email, winamp, dreamweaver blah blah blah....

I can\'t play Dos games anymore simply because I don\'t have a way of running them.  I\'d need to partition my harddrive.

i use the 1024x768 res for everything. a good balance between space and image size. and it means that the res doesn\'t bounce up and down slowing things down when i switch tasks.

I have one, but it can\'t exceed the performance of a 486!

Running in a 1024x768 window on a 1280x1024 LCD screen gives me large enough PS window and still room for other stuff like the web browser and IRC client.

there is dosbox, never used it, but well, dos games were meant to be played on a 486, so the game will play normaly...

A 486 might work for Hugo\'s House of Horrors or some basic shooter games, but my dos version of Dark Forces (let alone Tie Fighter!) need more power.  Even Starfighter has major slow downs, not to mention the 5 minute loading screens.

I\'m probably going to splurge for the collector\'s edition of Tie Fighter anyway (A whooping $15-$20 I think), but it would be nice to have a DOS emulator that could at least perform at the level of Pentium computers.

Dosbox is decent, I\'ve played a few games with it.  But its true that speed is often very bad even if you have a very good computer, but dosbox is about as good as it gets.  Try messing with the options if you get poor performance as I think there\'s a option that controls the emulator processor speed, which means your game will run the same speed on every computer unless you know about this and bother to increase it (I think it\'s dosbox, could be another emulator though as I havnt used it for a while).

In the literature for dosbox, it actually says that it can\'t run with speed faster than a 486.
