Heya, couple of questions while d/l the client.
« on: February 23, 2006, 08:40:59 pm »
heya, newbie here :D

I\'m downloading the game now, and i was just wondering what makes this game good?

I\'ve played many mmorpgs and they are either too repetitive or people dont speak very much. i dont mind repetitiveness as much, but mainly was just wondering if theres a good sense of community in the game?

also what game(s) would you compair it to? so i can get an idea of what its like.

I used to play Diablo 2 for a long time, and then moved onto the FPS scene(CoD), GW and then onto WoW but i dont wanna pay an ongoing fee as my pockets aint big enough :( hopefully i\'ll like this game :)

It depends.  There are people who just get in game, camp rogues and gladiators, and don\'t say two words to anyone (unless they think you stole something from them, in which case they usually start swearing at you, then you add them to your ignore list, then they get their friends to start swearing at you instead).

The good stuff though are the RPers, but they aren\'t as easy to find anymore.  The taverns are a good hotspot, and RP events are always good.  As long as they\'re RP events, and not just fighting tournaments.

I recomend just talking to people in game, observing the behaviour of others, adding people to your friends list, and joining a RP-based guild that suites your character.  Make sure it\'s an RP guild.  Don\'t join one that\'s simply dedicated to powerlevelling, like the dragon council. :-D

Oh, I missed that part!

I\'d compare it to a multiplayer version of daggerfall.

Heya ShroudedIllusion :)

Hoping you took a thorough look around the website and the stickied threads in the forums. One important bit:

Quote
Planeshift is at version 0.3 and is in early alpha development. And I mean heavy development. Things are changing, breaking, fixing, and being added, almost every day. There are lots of bugs, and the system is largely unbalanced as of yet. Everyone who wants to try this game should know this - you\'re becoming a tester, not a player of a fully-developed commercial game produced by a million-dollar company ;) PlaneShift is however fully and permanently open source and free, run by a constantly evolving and quite small team of volunteers with a budget of zero. 0.3 means we still have 7 versions to go before the game is considered somewhat \'Beta\' or even possibly complete, though development will never truly cease. And there are no dates ? this is a hobby project.

PlaneShift is meant to be a game for roleplayers - check the stickied \"Player Policy\" thread for more info :) It\'s a rather addicting environment though - plenty of helpful and interesting people, a friendly dev team, etc.

Welcome, and hope you stick around.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

What it\'s meant for, what it is, and how it\'s used are all different things.

(And how to get the most out of the game is a yet another.)

Sooo... how long are you exactly going to keep bugging our guild? Really, this is getting kind of old.
Just because we don\'t discriminate people based on their playing style, doesn\'t mean everyone of our members would be \"powerlevelers\" (I don\'t prefer using that word). We actually DO have a few RPers among our ranks ;)

I thought we were going to keep this to private messages?  Oh wait, you never returned them.

I\'m allowed to have my personal opinions about other guilds.  And yes, to me the Dragon Council is not a good place for role players, but it is an excellent guild if you want to power level your character.  The DC forums are filled with quest solutions, exploits, and other things like that.

Now please, try to be civil, and don\'t hijack threads.  My mailbox is always open.

You\'ve never sent me any pm\'s so what you\'re referring must be something else.
Well you posted your personal opinion on a public forum so I thought I had the right to do the same thing, apparently I was wrong. I\'m sorry lord zanzibar  ;(
Also, didn\'t know that making one post is considered hijacking. (Hmmm, so making this another post must definitely be hijacking  :P )

Oh well, I\'m already past my bedtime and I doubt anyone cares to talk (or mainly see us talk) about this further. Sorry to the mods and the thread starter for this off-topicness ^^

Good night and hugs to you Zanz  :)

Are you talking about my tournaments? if you are, you must be mad not being able to win them. It is a mixture of rp and fighting. And why not use fighting skills to RP well. After all, i AM rp?ng the Entertainer of Yliakum. and people love it. it improves rp and makes the power levelers aquinted with RP.

Be carefull at what you say Zanzibar... you can easily make mistakes blurting out something you do not have a clue about. I happily invite you to come and spectate one of my tournaments, make a bet at my Bookie, and perhaps even join warriors that all crave the titles i can give them. If you\'re ther, i\'ll give you the first drink for free, i\'ll preserve a beer with my Bevarage salesman.
yours, the entertainer

I\'ve been at your tournaments in the past, though I wasn\'t allowed to compete.

Like I said, an RP event which is just fighting?  It seems to belong in a different category.  When I was in the stands, there was actually some stuff going on.  Mostly just people buying drinks and the like.  But the main part of the event was just duelling.

Now, I don\'t have a problem with duels!  But someone who is really into RPing will leave such an event feeling disapointed.

edit:  And no, you didn\'t make me feel exactly \"welcomed\".  As I recall, you were cussing at me, and you accused me of \"ruining\" the tournament for some reason.

what is fun?
« Reply #12 on: February 24, 2006, 11:57:30 pm »
Well, as far as hijacked threads go, I guess you can tell that for some people fun is bickering with your opponents as the opportunity presents itself.

Fun is subjective, so what can you do: hack & slash is always available in the way of rogues rats many monsters and duels; adventuring in the way of roaming or exploring all the nooks and crannies of the world, or doing quests; apparently, there are role-players who hang out at places.

Another form of fun is that you get to pretend you are a game tester who doesn\'t understand the code, and hit your head against the wall while slobbering because you are so frustrated with all variables used to get a simple interaction to work, then no one will think the weirder of you because you go around trying to do strange things over and over and over again.

True.....

Just try different things.  Talk to different people.  Find out what and who you like, and stick with it.
