Linking and you.
« on: February 24, 2006, 10:54:18 am »
Well all to often I get a small nervous breakdown when I see the in-forum-linking-habbits some people have. It\'s happens rather frequent that, when someone links to another thread, sub forum or whatever he or she also adds style information, which pushes the clicker into a certain style.

Now let me analise a link to another thread on this forum (in this case a link to the great fan-fanart project: images thread)

http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=21467&boardid=22&styleid=3&sid=5e88dd61d82cd88814bdece82b5755e3

The URL to the thread watching part of this forum.

Everything after the \"?\" is information needed (or not needed) to define which thread you link to (and the forum the thread is in), as well as in which style the viewer will see the thread.

The Thread ID sets which thread the clicker will be linked to. This part of the URL is mandatory

The Board ID closely relates to the Thread ID and is as well used to define the thread to which the clicker is linked. This part of the URL is mandatory

The Style ID defines the style in which the thread will be seen by the clicker. Unless you aim to present the thread in a certain style I would advice you to cut it off.

Be aware that the StyleID is not always there if you copy it out of the URL bar of your browser. If you want to set a certain style you simply add \"&styleid=\" + the number of the style you want the thread to be seen in at the end of the url, or if there\'s already a styleid in it simply change the number.

Possible attributes for Style ID:
 • 1 -> A rather old gray and bluish style, doesnt cope to well with the new Banner.
 • 2 -> A brighter version of the above style.
 • 3 -> The standard, blue - white style.
 • 4 -> The all famous brown - greenish style.
Everything above 4 results in an ugly white-in-white with black standard font appearance.

The Session ID contains Information about your current session. I would advice you to cut it out, always.

Edit: Be aware to delete lone \"&\"s at the end of your URL

Nice, I think this should be added to forum faq.

Can also add page/post pointer \"&page=1#5\" if only one post is of interest.
(With 1 being the page number, and 5 the index of post you want to point. Note that the post index is counted from all posts in that thread, not just the posts in that page.)

Eg. here is a post by kariloy: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=13181&boardid=19&page=4#72

You can also use different text as link to keep the post cleaner: A post by kariloy.
Syntax for this is: Link text

More Burning Board Codes.

That\'s so nifty :) I wish the official forum FAQ could be edited with such things, as well as \"How to post images,\" \"Why you can\'t have avatars,\" and a plethora of other useful info. Actually, if I could move this over to the Forum Issues section and sticky it for now, would that be alright?
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Hmm, that\'s some usefull info there Cyl.
I experienced myself that because of links with the style info included I had multiple tabs of the PS forum open with each a different skin. If everyone would read this, things would be better.  :)

no longer an issue due to the forum move way back when. --neko
