Outdated torrent file?
« on: March 04, 2006, 01:07:15 am »
Hi there,

I\'m confused.. I\'ve gotten the torrent from the download page and it contains 0.3.011. Other people seem to be up and running with 0.3.013.
What am I missing?

Considering that there was never a torrent made for 0.11.... Are you instead downloading one of the old .dmg\'s off the web server or something?

How are you sure that it is version 0.11? It could be that I didn\'t update version information somewhere.. .does the client start and/or connect to the server?

Thanks,
Daniel

Hi there,

I don\'t think so.. I\'m downloading again just to make sure. The torrent file is called PlaneShift_CBV0.3.013.macosx.torrent, right?

Correct!

EDIT: Yes, I\'ve confirmed that the version shown when you do a \"Get Info\" on psclient shows 0.3.011 - Sorry for not fixing that before shipping!

Apologies,
Daniel

Hello again,

So the same thing happened: the download gave me 0.3.011. This is what I\'ve done:

*Downloaded a program called Azureus (because bittorrent didn\'t work for me).

*Downloaded PlaneShift_CBV0.3.013.macosx.torrent from the downloads page on the mainsite.

*Ran Azureus and opened PlaneShift_CBV0.3.013.macosx.torrent. Azureus then downloaded PlaneshiftCB_v13.dmg

*I double-click on PlaneshiftCB_v13.dmg to mount it

All of this happens successfully. Then when I get info on the \"new\" psclient, I see that it is version 0.3.013. Opening psclient (or updater or pssetup) doesn\'t work (i.e. the icon appears in the Dock, bounces for a couple of seconds and disappears).

I\'m confused! :S

EDIT: I just saw your edit, dfryer. :) Let me try again... Yup, it\'s still quitting on me like I described above.

If it doesn\'t start (since it\'s almost certainly the right version), try running from the terminal.  If you have MSN you can contact me at \"dfryer at uvic dot ca\" or using IRC at #planeshift-build on irc.freenode.net and I can give you a hand.

terminal not working on it
« Reply #7 on: March 04, 2006, 04:07:48 am »
Terminal won\'t even allow opening it the easy way with command o--the app is not selectable.

using all the paths i can imagine with the cd  or   open command says \"the file does not exist\" or \"to many arguments\"

I must be using the wrong commands--what are they supposed to be.  I haven\'t used terminal much in a long time.

ALSO the newer download of the dmg has the same problems.

perhaps we can get that missing file from the crash logs somewhere?

Or correct the code to look fro the right file?

The reason for this is now given at the top of my original thread.  A new (and random) dependency was silently introduced, which is missing on OS 10.2.x .  Specifically, /usr/lib/libmx.dylib is missing so either I\'ll distribute it or I\'ll distribute a version that doesn\'t need it.  Unfortunately I\'m suddenly *very* busy with some schoolwork that I\'m ... behind on, so I can\'t fix it right now :(

If Cha0s or someone with 10.3 can provide the file, it should be possible to download it at put it in the right place.

The actual file that the client is looking for is /libmx.A.dylib
is that just a typo?  If it is not, then the client is also asking for the wrong file.

[but just do your homework--I had several friends fall out of college from mmorpg addiction--so let it go]

***Whoa.  \"Silently added\"?  I hope you don\'t mean to the swarm.  Would that be the change that crashed the swarm the first day I was doing it? (Or, do you mean a team-member working on the mac version inserted it without telling anyone?)
I spent a total of 12 hours working your swarm at maximum upload speed; my network even gave me extra upload speed the 2nd day--I even used the plugin to block snoopers.  And some version update conspirator stuck in a file to make the game not work on my OS? Well, THAT does suck.***

No, it\'s just that I\'ve moved from 10.2 to 10.3, and the autoconf scripts use this particular library if it\'s available (which I wasn\'t aware of).  So, until I fix that, it\'ll ask for libmx.  No conspiracy or corruption, although I do take bribes if offered.

Did you only update from 10.2 to 10.3 on the same computer--or was it a new system all together?
The reason I ask is because 10.3 had many many many bugs in it--10.4 is actually just a 10.3 fix with some different peripheral aps..
A common bug was with sound, sound cards, drivers--even video cards.  I remember that the bug was compounded when 10.3 was updated to on the same puter 10.2 came with (some of the bugs never got fixed--the cards had to be changed).  However, other cards created new drivers for the 10.3 system. So this could be your sound problem.

It is similar to the problem of your 10.3 configure of the game to cause the psclient to ask for a file (could be many more files than the first one that causes the start-up crash) 10.2 doesn\'t have.  10.3-.4 have the file from 10.2, so a game configured on 10.2 would run on all OSX later than 10.2.

However, if this is the cause of your sound not working, then it is compouded by the cards requiring a different file to run with the game than the psclient or 10.3 are calling for.  Sometimes a fix was as simple as getting the latest drivers for your card, but the version for 10.3 instead of 10.2--if they\'re still available somewhere.  It is like separate updates for different os.

[It IS forced os update conspiracy.  Many of these files are just directories which do pretty much the same thing as the previous version (and I have to wonder if some of them are the same file with just a different name) but when a peripheral app is configured on a later version then the previous os becomes incapable of running the peripheral.]

***by the way:  What the HECK are you doing here?  Go do your homework before you flunk out, and windup working in a box store for minimum wage barely able to pay your rent--let alone eat.

There is no conspiracy :P

The \"not working on 10.2\" problem is totally separate from the \"sound doesn\'t work\" problem.  The sound doesn\'t work for a known reason (CS requests an unsupported sound format, but we can fix that).  PS doesn\'t work on 10.2 for another known reason, that is, CS uses libmx for several floating point math functions if it\'s available instead of using it\'s own built in (and probably slower) implementations.  This library was made available in 10.3 and I didn\'t notice the change.

Could that be the reason why the game runs so much speedier than the previous versions? Or because the hardware doesn\'t have to fiddle with sound? It runs much faster on my ibook g4 800 now.
If it\'s the first case please leave it as it is. I don\'t know how many people are still using osx 10.2 but.. it\'s getting really outdated.

I think the lack of sound is more likely to be responsible for the speedup, but I\'m not going to require anyone to spend $100 to upgrade their OS (plus all of the problems that sometimes ends up bringing...)

It also could be improvements to Crystal Space (they do happen, ya know :D )
