IRC
« on: March 04, 2006, 06:05:40 am »
I just read through all the subjects on this, and it seems it to be kept a secret.  I thought it was a website--no wonder I couldn\'t link to it.

Through google I finally found the page at freenode.net which tells what it is and how to use: apparently, it is a closed chat network for which you must download their free client in order to use it....(got to tired of all the reading--never found how to use the client even after getting it, probably have to get it and try for 3 days, but I guess they might be more up front about it, there).

bye

Hello o.O

mIRC is the most common client, pretty basic but works for me. For something ridiculously complex and full of superfluous features, people prefer HydraIRC. Then there\'s XChat. It\'s not hard to figure out - but reading a few client docs and general IRC FAQs is usually beneficial ;) Server freenode, channel #planeshift. \\o/

I can\'t figure out if this was supposed to be a separate thread after all, or just a reply elsewhere...
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I just use the ChatZilla extension for FireFox.  Works quite nicely.

Simply put, IRC is a whole other chunk of the Internet, besides the World Wide Web.  It\'s our primary method of communication, really.

Uh... yeah...  no.  :P

Ok, for the less computer savy peoples:

The Internet:
  • HTTP:  World Wide Web
  • FTP:  File servers (only used in conjunction with HTTP nowadays)
  • Email
  • Newsgroups
  • IRC
  • P2P networks
There are a few other things like Gopher and such, but those are the main ones currently.  Yes, every one of those has some form of whatever:// available to them.  If you have a suitable program installed (and listening for the links) you can click a link to an irc://, and many of the P2P networks have similar systems as well.  Also, while we\'re on the subject, AOL is NOT the Internet.  They\'re just the last one of the older ISPs to still have their own garbage content.

Nah, BBSes aren\'t part of the Internet.  To actually be \"part\" of the Internet, it needs to be accessible via your ISP.  BBSes are directly dialed up, so they don\'t count.  :D
