About mining.

OK.

Finding places to dig wasn\'t really so hard as I thought, when I asked around abit.

Now, hm  I am lvl 3 dwarf miner and another person is a Elf lvlv1 miner and we both stand on the same place digging same thing and he gets as many diamond crystals as I do when we mine for the same amount of time.

hm.  When I had my 20 he had his 19 .

Uhm  ok could anyone please explain?

Is there any point at all to accually spent money on training the mining skill which hovewer is almost impossible to get any practical experience in.

Another thing.
Mining for coal seems to be useless because it has a market value of 0  and it can\'t be used for anything else ?   am I wrong about this ?

Yes, coal does have a use in metallurgy.  I believe we are not supposed to post specific information here, so I won't spoil your fun in discovering.  Best bet is to ask around in-game.  Most people will flat out ignore you but there are a few helpful souls who will give you information.

I did some tests too regarding the mining system, and it is true, I haven't notice any difference between mining diamonds with a 150 mining skill and mining diamonds with a 5 mining skill. It might be a bug but so far, I can't quite place my finger on it. I'll do some more tests and submit the bug on the BT if I'll have some more concludent data.

The closer you are to the center of the ore deposit when you dig, the more likely you are to get something. Is it possible that the elf was just closer to the diamond's source?

Anyway, if your mining for money, I suggest you mine gold. It has triple the value of diamonds (albeit triple the weight), but it's a lot easier to mine, and easier to travel to and from the spot. And a higher skill level definitely yields more gold.

Not to be a doof, but what exactly is the mechanism for mining? I bought a pick and equipped it. I found a spot where others are mining. How do I...swing? ???

Okay, wait. It looks like I should talk to Harnquist again, first.

Assuming your character has learned the theory behind swinging a pickaxe into an ore-rich location, you use the /dig verb.  For example,
/dig gold
or
/dig iron

I've tried /dig grave, but that doesn't seem to be implemented yet. ???
Did you get the number on that one-eyed rat?

Lol, love the tongue-and-cheek...ness.

And Harnquist wont tell you squat about game mechanics.

Actually, he wont tell you squat at all :P

So, do I need to speak to Harnquist at all before I can use the verb /dig?

Also, an aside: He accepted the broken shield, but then wouldn't do anything with it, regardless of the hints the quest-giver gave me. ::)

If you've been trained in the art of pick-axe wielding, you do not need to speak with him.  Otherwise, you'll need to pay him to tutor you until you're green.

Also, last time I checked, you can't mine left-handed.

(Translation: You must be either rank 1 or higher in mining, OR have rank 0 and the theoretical knowledge.  Harn will train that if you have the PP and some cash.  When the yellow bar for the 'mining' stat becomes all green, you can mine.  Then the green will increase and displace the red as you mine, until you rank up and it goes back to yellow.  And hold the pick in your right hand).
