Unfair character creation
« on: March 12, 2006, 03:11:09 pm »
How was I supposed to know that being born with the help of a spell is less advantageous than being born in a very cold and snowy place? Because in my case, it was and I found this only by trial-and-error. There are many other examples, such as in Life Events, but I don\'t rememeber those too well.

Therefore, I propose that either each character trait has written below it how it affects one\'s stats, or someone makes a new topic and writes the effect for everything in character creation. I would do the latter if there\'s no mod that will volunteer (since they probably have an easier way of getting this info).

Many people have taken the time to create thier own lists for personal/guild usage, but simply givingthat info here would be technicaly going gainst the rules I believe.  Why don\'t you simply have fun like the rest of us and experiment?  Not that it really matters at all anyway.  All stats are levelable to the max in the end no matter where you start.  But if, you\'re here just for leveling stats, well, perhaps you may want to rethink why you\'re here as this is mostly a RP based game, not saying that leveling is bad, but it just isn\'t the main reason why most of us are here.

Different things affect different things in different ways *hugs the word different*

also different people have different views on what is advantageous .
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Example:

\"You helped a smithy with his job\"

Obviously  your \"Repair Weapons\" and \"Create weapons\" would be better in the beggining. EVerything efects you in realistic ways.

You know, there is a panel just before you hit \"upload\" on the character generation that TELLS you what your stats and skills will be. If you want to know exactly what this birth month or that event will do for you, go to the end and look, then go back with \"prev.\" It\'s not all that hard, thoguh there are a few things that you have to pick something before going on - but you can alaways change them.

Now, the idea that stumbling around like a fool because you\'re new and no one will tell you what something does or where things are is \"more fun\" is something that I question when taken to the extreme, but at the general level of observance I\'ve found so far it\'s not too bad. (I\'m looking for (common place) - Oh, it\'s thataway - I\'ve been wandering around trying to find (uncommon place) - Yeah, me too, I\'ve been over there so if you\'ve been over here, let\'s go this way together) Extending this to the point of making the results of character generation opaque (especially when not everything it will give you can even be used at this stage of developement) would be one of those extremes, but like I just said above, it doesn\'t go that far, so good enough, eh wot?

Personality test

The very first (my introductory) rp adventure game I played was \"In Search of the Avatar.\"  Played on an old Commodore 64 (it was \"outdated\" then) but I was in the middle of nowhere in a rundown shack, and children of cousins were visiting from a big city in California.

That game used a series of modified personality tests to create your character.  My two cousings looked at each other like I was a Mystic or something when they saw what I was to be, and given my first quest. Then when I died, shortly, they stared at me to see what happened to me--it seemed like several minutes before they asked if I wanted to go again.  [Crazy people were still committing suicide when their characters died, back then, and religions were still condemning role-playing as being more evil, demonic, and corrupting than actors in the theater during the Victorian era.]

With Planeshift, I was surprised when I created a character and it actually largely resembled me.  I had chosen what I thought would be good to be or wanted to be, not based on how it would affect my character, but how it appealed to me--as a person--to be an interesting character.  As I learned char creation more, I was shocked how my choices had actually cancelled each other out making a character with all of my real-life character problems.

You should try it--maybe you\'ll discover something about yourself to change your ways before it is too late.  The Planeshift char creation is actually very complex, if you choose things that you like, then you may wind up with a character much like yourself--kinda ruins the whole escape from reality benefit of a role-play game though.

Character first, stats second.
\"Impossible is in the eye of the beholder.\" -- Laredo Silverspring.
\"Huh?\" -- Crimsonn Draycko.

same here... i try to get good stats to show people what kind of person i am... example, i based my life magically and a bit heroic, that makes me spiritual, good guy etc. If i needed to create a character from simply  who i wanted to be i couldn\'t play and battle the way i wanted, also would my personage change.

Who your character is comes from how you react and relate to others.  The character creation thing doesn\'t really have much of an effect on that element of the game.  To me, it really is just about stats.  Am I making a character which has a lot in crystal way, or am I trying to make a character that will have an easy time killing rats?

The thing is, I like the way the character generator in planeshift works.  I think that it\'s different, interesting, and it has a lot of potential.  Certain things in it don\'t exactly make sense, but common sense and trial and error should cover it.

Eventually, I\'d like to see the character generator control things like what items you start off with... and where your character spawns for the first time.  If you have level 5 or above in a particular way, then why shouldn\'t you start off with a glyph?  If you have a few levels in sword, then why not start off with a short sword?  And so on.
