Idea about time
« on: January 02, 2003, 01:44:45 am »
How about a grand \"clock\" that people could go to know the time, it should work like those nice \"sun-time-tellers\" you make at the boy scouts. A large pole (with nice carrvings for style and maybe a statue at the top)  with a round clock-like circle around it. the shadow of the pole shows us what time it is. Lots of really cool thing could be added to this. Like the chineese (who we all admire) have their year of the sheep and so on. How about \"hour (or whatever you use for time) of the diaboli (at nighttime)  or \"the hour of . Every race coulld have their own time, the time where they like it the best.  The huge clock wich all other watches are set by dont have numbers, but symbols  to show us what time it is. This would by my oppinion add more to the game, and the famous square in the main city than just a ordinary clock

A neat idea, but hadn\'t you better make the clock mechanical rather thatn colar, as the crytal (in my understanding) doesn\'t move?

oh, didn\'t think of that. this is maybe just my imagination running away with me, but Im starting to picture the \"clock\" in my mind. With a fountain at the bottom. Water running out out of two snake/dragon heads. The body\'s of the to snake\'s/dragons twirling up the pole, their tails balancing a little platform. On top of the platform some god or guardian of time. If I was any good at drawing I would make a sketch.

dude that sounds hella good

Or

the dragons move the clocks hands
like the tails wind up the pole and theyre tails create the hands on the clock!

Time in Ilyakum is measured by the height of the water in the seventh level. I would guess that at \'midnight\' the entire level would be exposed and the water would slowly rise and by \'noon\' it would be completely underwater. Then it would start going down again. Then again if it\'s halfway up, how do you tell if it\'s before \'noon\' or \'midnight.\'

Also the light of the crystal fluctuates to create day and night cycles

I didn\'t know about the water thing. How will we, the players, know how high the water is at any time, if we are not in the 7th level I mean ? Anyway, I would love some kind of grand clock in the main city somewhere.

The Crystal draws its light from the surface and thus Yliakum is subjected to times of \"day\" and \"night\". However even while at night, it is not completely dark. Hours are measured by the level of the lake, which rises and falls in an extremely consistent manner. A wide band of the metal Orichalc was put on a section of the sixth wall and was used not only because it is the only metal that doesn\'t deteriorate whatsoever, but also because underwater flora cannot take root in it. The names of the six periods that divide each of the four seasons are carved on this band, and information about the periods is engraved over the level reports.

The year is subdivided into four seasons only because of the cultural heritage of the people coming from the surface and the observation of the cyclic phenomena of vegetable growth. During the twenty-four periods of the year, the Crystal\'s azure light varies marginally, helping to reinforce the different periods.

Just to make sure you people know how the nature of everything works. Always a good thing in a discussion;)

Good idea with a clock, but as Jessyn mentioned earlier, it would be better if it was mechanical.
The best thing to do is to create a clock-tower (Zelda: majoras mask)? :D  And then every hour (in game) it would sound.
I liked the idea with the snakes too, so I\'m not sure. It would be extremely beautilful with a huge statue of the sun-godess.

Yeah, but it must not look like big ben, thats not very \"planeshiftish\" (is that a word ?) But very nice looking clock, a mechanical one, would be awsome. Maybe the goddess of the sun or whatever could point at the current time. But how about the whole \"Hour of the something\" idea. I believe it would be much better knowing that you are in the hour of the diaboli than to know its five o\'clock. Because time in planeshift would have to be faster then real life time. So instead of a clock that spins in rediculous speed, we could count only hours, and not minutes. Like instead of \"its a quarter to seven\" we would say \"we\'re ending the hour of the hammerwielders soon\"

So, why is there a need for a clock?

OK, my idea is that the clock is not a \"clock\" as we know it. It doesnt tell the time with hands and numbers.

The \"clock\" in the middle of the city, would be an ornamental pond that is either magically or physically connected to the lake outside. This way, time could be told by the rise and fall of the water. And you could have all your fancy decorations, fountains and statues.

If the \"clock\" was connected to the lake by magic, then you could have these clocks all over Yliakum, on all different levels. They would work like those big, time telling stones in Zelda: Ocarina of time, they would be spread all over the world, and you could go up to them to find out the time.

... I never did find out if those stones had any greater purpose, other than whacking them with your sword, and placing bombs at their feet.

This would also be nice, but kind of hard to get the time from this ponds ? I dont know about you, but I can\'t get very ecsact information based on the level of a pond. But I like the idea of a magical clock different from \"normal\" clocks.

You CAN get the exact time from the water.

There would be some sort of marker, telling you the water level and therefore the time.

The residents of Yliakum already tell the time by the height of the water in the lake, so why couldnt they tell the time with these ponds?

If you wear the mask of truth the stones give you a nifty message.
