Roleplay Motivation/Information
« on: March 17, 2006, 08:00:12 pm »
Unfortunely, implementing fighting before crafting has provoked some clashes about PS\'s original setting. Roleplaywise (gamewise, since this is a roleplaying game) where there should be a community of crafters with a government composed with members of Craft Guilds, we have a community composed by warriors, without any kind of laws.

While I understand that this is a complicated time to engage into roleplays that faithfully capture PS\'s setting, I believe it\'s in the developing team\'s best interest to keep an eye on how the roleplay side can be shaped into something more senseful and rewarding, for once the game is fully constructed.
I am not wishing for a new reshaped community or to have the developing team through an ordeal to please the players that above all are testers.
What I mean is that by studying what we already have, I think the team will become better prepared for the roleplaying that will take place once the setting is complete.
This way I believe the team would be capable of inclining people towards the ideal setting PS was intended to have (through events, rewards, etc.) so that the incoming generations of PS players join a great setting with solid bases.

Also, the current vehicles we possess to spread important information to new palyers are rather unefficient. New players can enter the game without knowing how to roleplay or how take advantage of PS\'s setting.
To correct this, I think a new item should be added to the guide that comes with the installer: this item would be \"Roleplaying.\"
The /help box should also have an item regarding this.

Somewhere within the installer there should be a legible warning informing players about the guide. And upon the first connection of a new character another legible warning should appear in the console, pointing players towards the /help command.

I almost forgot. \"Why?\"
Because Planeshift is a MMORPG and when we\'re speaking about masses, we have to keep in mind that motivation and information are powerful tools that can shape wonderful things.

Even the people who claim to be RPers could brush up on what it means....

It\'s not acting out a play, and it\'s not supposed to be exclusive.... whoever is around in the PS world at the time IS AROUND in the PS world at the time.  In character, you\'re supposed to react to them according to how your character operates, and they\'re allowed to react to you!

Any roleplaying which happens in game, but is acted out as if you\'re outside of the Planeshift World, is actually out of character.

I do agree that roleplay shouldn\'t be exclusive, but it\'s still playing/acting out a role.

Anyway, this has little to do with the topic here. I\'m just saying that in a roleplay game there should be information avaible to help the players carry out a good roleplaying experience.
Plus, there should also be some efforts to motivate people so that when the final result comes most people are conscient about PS\'s setting and so roleplaying can be acted out without having any clashes with it.

He\'s got a good point there.

We need to promote Roleplaying and what is not easier then informing the players of what PS was really meant for, otherwise we could create special RP servers but that would sometimes be too tiring to act out your role if you\'re a loud one IC.

In player servers there would be chaos as there is no special order to command any player to be calm, and as the game is free there are no obstacles for younger players to join.

I think we should teach the new players much on what is Roleplaying before we let them out in the world. The younger players will learn responsibility by acting out IC, not losing it, and Older players would learn what this RP really is for, adding a nice environment to those who already play.

It\'s always fun tutoring an enthusiastic student, let\'s keep it that way by showing him the option \"Roleplaying\".

Is it about a role, or is it about the character?

\"You should be able to create a character, then plop that character in a setting, and things should happen naturalistically from there.  That\'s the essense of role-playing.\"

What do you make of that statement?

I can\'t understand what it has to do with the topic I\'m trying to develop here...

Anyway.

I believe it\'s possible to have order without separating people with new servers: some guilds may be appointed to keep order, GM\'s might roleplay the guards or NPCs can be created with the purpose of reacting to unlawful stuff done within the town.

I totally agree. If the game itself instructed people, the community\'s job would be alot easier. New players would understand how to roleplay in PS by reading the /help or by checking the guide. I think it would make everyone\'s life easier.
