Writing music as a job.... for computer games?
« on: March 30, 2006, 08:59:35 am »
A prof I have for a music composition in film course told me that these days, three times as much money is spent on music for video games than for movies.  He thinks that the future of film scoring is actually in video games.

Does anyone here write music professionally or have insight on the industry in terms of video games?

Well, I don\'t write professionally, but my brother does, and he tends to be in the know about things. I sent him an e-mail with regards to the question. He\'s usually busy though, so who knows when I\'ll get his reply =/   I\'ll post here when I do get it though.

As for my opinion though.  I could see this happening. In my opinion, movies are fairly short in comparison with computer games (particularly RPGs) So, more time, and money is used in creating music for the games. I don\'t really know how much money a single game would make compared to a single movie...I guess it depends on how well they do. But...I will say this:  Music in video games has come a -long- way since the 80\'s (remember the 8-bit music on the NES, or even the stuff on the C64 or the good ole TRS-80?)  Movie/cinematic music has also changed a lot, but ... I can\'t quite put my finger on how it has changed. Something about the feeling, maybe moving more into an ambient feel?  Not that it\'s a bad thing. Some movie music is very nice...i\'m quite fond of Danny Elfman\'s stuff ^_^  However other music is just kinda...i dunno...there.

I remember my brother remarking on some of the stuff in CSI (not a movie, but still works for the point) and he commented on how simple the music in it was, and yet the person who created it was probably getting paid a boatload.

Anyhoo, three game music composers i\'m fond of:  Motoi Sakuraba (Star Ocean/Xenosaga), Jeremy Soule(Dungeon Siege/Morrowind/Kotor), and Koichi Sugiyama(Dragon Quest 1 thru 8 ).  I can\'t remember who did the music for Xenogears, but I think it was also Sakuraba. I\'m particularly fond of Sugiyama\'s music. It just seems so creative in nature...well..to me at least hehe. Soule\'s music is often very ambient in nature, much like some film scores.

Now...whether videogame music will be the future or evolution of movie music or not...well...I can\'t answer that. I don\'t know.  But I do feel that in the last 5 or 10 years, game music has certainly approached, and in some cases surpassed the quality of music in movies (well, in my opinion anyways) So...yeah...I think I could see the potential for game music to surpass movie music. Whether it will or not remains to be seen I guess.

Just my 2 cents. And e-mail sent ta my bro heh.

edit:  I realize I kinda missed the point here, and got off track. the furture of film scoring itself being in games?  yeah...I think so. I mean, I can see it...particularly in role-playing games. I mean...you\'ve got around a 40+hour game to fill with music.  That\'s a hella lot more room to play with than in a 2hr movie :P And when you figure in time spent with the team, royalties, possibly commercial/advertisement, and doing music for that...yeah...I think it could be quite lucrative. Of course...the hard part is getting IN to that industry.  Just my opinion though. I kinda hope to get there myself someday, but right now i\'m still a budding amateur ;)

edit 2:
go to http://www.ocremix.org
go to their remixing forum, and search. I remember reading a topic similar to this at some point...well...maybe not this, but in dealing with getting into the industry.  Also, a lot of the remixers there write music professionally.  One of em works for Midway Games. Think it\'s The Wingless who works for them. Not sure. Worth a look at any rate ^^

The music for Dungeon Siege (at least, the demo) was cool, but he was borrowing heavily from Debussy.

heh, yeah, I hear it too, especially in the piano and strings.  check out \"Squaresoft Variation\" on OC Remix.  That\'s one he contributed to the site. It\'s based on the Overworld theme from Final Fantasy 6 (3 USA)

You should probably listen to some of sugiyama\'s works if you haven\'t.  pick up, or order the dragon quest symphonic suite sometime. Pretty good stuff imo. His styles vary quite a bit depending on which place in the game the music comes from. Everything from courtly dances to impressionistic.  I don\'t know if I\'d call any of his works contemporary, but some of them express fairly modern ideas. All around good stuff hehe.

Hmmm...debussy...that makes me want to work on my piano skills again.  I was asking my former instructor about \"Gradus Ad Parnasum\" which is supposed to be a book on composition dealing with counterpoint and such.  He got confused and thought I was asking about the Debussy piece from Children\'s Corner. Apparently Debussy wrote the piece for his daughter when she was learning piano or something. Anyways, he copied the music and offered it, so I was like what the heck, why not.  heh, I still can\'t play it >_< but then, my skills aren\'t that great...hardest thing i\'ve played so far was Solfeggietto. :P

well, I got my brother\'s response, and I must confess it is not as informative as I had hoped.

\"I don\'t really know - that\'s an interesting statement but I don\'t know whether it is actually true. It would take a little research. I somehow suspect that it is not true, but again, I\'m not sure\"

So...where as I think I lean towards \"it might be so\"  looks like he leans toward \"it might not be so\"

*shrug*  I agree though, it would take some research to be sure one way or the other.

Side note:  my brother is not a gamer, so it might just be that he hasn\'t paid much attention to the videogame music side of things other than my own personal goals and ambitions. I really was hoping for a stronger response from him though :/

Music in video games is definitely a big thing. A lot of people concentrate on visual aspects and take music for granted. But if it\'s done badly, it\'s very noticable.

I have personally e-mailed some composers and/or gaming companies, such as RavenSoft, and have gotten quick replies from their composers, and appreciation for my compliments.

For example, look at Jeremy Soule, he wrote the beautiful theme music for Morrowind, Icewind Dale and many other games. Another artist I like is \"Jesper Kyd\". He was mostly writing music for sci-fi or \"modern setting\" games but has recently been hired to write for an upcoming MMORPG called \"The Chronicles of Spellborn\" and what he\'s written so far is beautiful.

It\'s definitely a great job. :)

As a matter of fact, yes, all three. I\'ll never forget this tune and still listen to it once in a while (my favorite):

Kyrandia 1 Track 6

EDIT: Also these from Kyrandia 2:

Kyrandia 2 Track 7

Kyrandia 2 Track 34

Why? :)

Is there supposed to be a connection between Krzysztof Penderecki and Frank Klepacki? Are they related? ;)

apologies for bumping the old-ish thread, but I found this over on OCRemix, and it came to mind what with the mentioning of Kyrandia awhile back. Didn't wanna start a new thread just for this little bit hehe. Seems to be a medley of tunes from Legends of Kyrandia.

It's an older tune on the site, so it's not quite as polished as the more recent remixes, but it still sounds pretty good.

That's cool!  I remember trying to load up that game once before, but it didn't work on the new version of windows I had at the time.  EMG memory and all that.  It really was a neat game.  Hee hee, glow berries... we need those in planeshift!
