a nasty doubt
« on: April 10, 2006, 11:24:26 pm »
hi folks. i downloaded the 3.013 version in BitComet. when i try tu run it, a message saying that i have an incorrect version for the current server. then i run the updater and it says that there are no more updates available. then i read the forums and someone says that a new version ( 3.014) is available for download in the BitComet. i began downloading it, but i dont know if it is necessary. i mean, what about the updater? thanx for your time

This release just began like 3 seconds ago.  And, officially I think we\'re calling what\'s available a \"preview\".  Basically, that means it has a big, gaping, annoying, crasheroo...  It\'s not on the update servers yet due to this, and also we like to let BitTorrent take some of the initial bandwidth hit.

The server is running the new version, yes, but it\'s not flawless - there are bugs in the new client code to take care of that have not been caught during quick internal testing. PlaneShift isn\'t a professional, commercial MMO :) It\'s a work in development, a work in progress - and all the players are testers to help us catch mistakes and fix them.

The updater does not work yet because the new files have not been put on the updater mirrors yet.

No no, not rude at all :) Sorry if I made it seem that way. I was just surprised to hear a question like \"why are things crashing?\" because... well, I guess we\'re all so used to it happening when new content is introduced ;) Right now the biggest problem occurs when you are trying to log into or enter a certain map, Ojaveda Road. A fix will be applied ASAP.

One of the common server crashes was just fixed, so things should be getting more stable.  The last one listed was just one of the standard pet crashes we were also getting before the update.

they did that once.  back when we made the flip to cb from mb. and the poor servers that they were hosted on melted to slag.

besides the installer is normal. bt is just the best way to initially distribute.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.

Yeah, that is an issue that we need to think about.  I have some ideas to refactor the updater so we can avoid this.   torrents are good when there are a lot of seeds and not quite so good when there are few.

Normally you would only need the torrent for the initial download and the updater would handle future patches.  But at the moment we are a bit stuck until we can develop an improved updating process ( one that works well for all platforms. )

Our normal mirrors will be updated as soon as we get the actual 0.3.14 release out, for as you can read on the main page, this one is more of a preview. Some nasty bugs need to be fixed and patches need to be packaged. BitTorrent is definitely not our only way of distribution, but it helps immensly in taking the load off of regular mirrors.

t2vanden, you need to stop posting all over the forums, please. Make one thread and stick to it.
