Bugs and more bugs!
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:30:55 pm »
Well, having finally figured out how to talk to NPC\'s and having found a very helpful PC (thanks Zan!), I am scouring the sewers for rats and cash enough to buy my first swords.
The reason for this thread is that I was thinking it would be very useful to new players (like me!) if there was some type of running list on the newbie forum of in game bugs, say created by more experienced players etc. So we are not needlessly banging our heads.
This is a great game, I have been looking for a long time for an mmorpg thats actually an RPG and not a dugeon bash or hack and slash. As a long time D&D player and DM of a Dragonlance campaign just starting to get into computer and online RPG\'s this is very refreshing. Keep up the great work!

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I can\'t believe I didn\'t see that before thanks. Just one question. Whats a backtrace?

A backtrace is a dump you get after a crash - usually messages come up asking you to save a file that you can then upload for the devs to take a look at and figure out what\'s wrong.

The dumps on the Win version or an assert in a debug build do backtraces.  If we can reproduce a crash, we can get our own with more info.  More precisely, a backtrace is a trace backwards from the crash to what called it.  Check Ary\'s crash sticky for examples.  (most are from the crash dumps, but the last is from GDB; you can get more detailed ones, too)  It\'s just a list of the steps that led to it\'s demise.

Thanks for the info. Whenever I log out of the game I get an error message asking if I wan\'t to make a report, and my Win XP reporter pops up and asks me if I want to send a report to microsoft. Is this normal?

That stupid exit crash keeps coming back...  It\'s rather inconsequential, so just ignore it.

Ah, the good old exit crash, I got rid of it as of .13  :D
It\'s pretty much part of the PS experience at the moment, a dev once said PS\'s exit is more like a controlled crash.  :)

Yeah, that was me.  ;)

It\'s really not a simple crash, like other things.

Hard to fix + meaningless == ignored

Exit the client by pressing the \"Q\" key and the crash will go away.

Not exactly. I always exit with the \"Q\" key and still get random crashes on exit.

Well, for the windows client the trick seems to help. Or at least for my client.

From a newbie that didn\'t have the brains to even look for this.

When you\'re new it\'s hard to tell the difference between a bug and a PLBKAC.
