What's up with the sf cvs?
« on: April 13, 2006, 07:27:17 pm »
I\'ve heard, and i think i can confirm, that the sourceforge cvs is not up to date. Is PS moving away from sf? Is there any other way/place to check out fresh sources?

SF is just a piece of junk.  They had a hardware issue a few weeks ago, and the dev server was down for about a week.  The annon-dev syncing has been down for about 2 weeks since then, and as a result what most people can access is out of date.  We have no control over this, whatsoever.

Sourceforge is providing a free service.

They accept donations. So, if you think their service is not proper (considering that is for free :D ) you can support them with money. Surely, if they have problems - which might happen in every place on earth - they will need your money!

If you search through the news on the SF website, you will read what exactly has happened to the anon (that stands for anonymous) access to CVS.

Aye.

Blizzard Entertainment - which ran a no-cost multiplayer gaming service pre-WoW (World of Warcraft) - sucked just as bad.  The last time I checked, they still did. Their servers would go down for maintenance every. . .oh. . .two days.
I know games and development tools are far from the same thing, but hey - when you enlist a free service, expect to get something other than the best.

Hy AryHann,

i\'ve searched the sf-site but couldn\'t find abything about what has happened to the anon access. Can you give me a more specific hint?

I found that they fired up some new services and that they have some good sponsors like AMD or IBM. So, they seem to do pretty well.

So, if they really had to stop dev-anon syncing for ( i think it\'s now ) more than a month ( at least for PS ), they render these projects defacto closed source.
And if this had happened due to a shortage on resources ( which i doubt, as in the news you can read that they just added new contributed hardware ), i would expect some easier to find calls for donations or informations about the situation on their site.

Whatever, i didn\'t want to start a discussion about the quality of sourceforge, or free services in general, my concern was just to know if there are any informations, if we may can access the PS-Sources again via sf, or if there will be another way to get them in the future.

They like to just pretend it doesn\'t happen.  The only info you can get is on their status page, which is linked to from the little green dot in the upper right of their main site.  About a week after something goes wrong, you can find something there.  Yeah, I know it\'s a free service, but people depend on it and that doesn\'t make it any less annoying.  :/

We\'re looking into other ways to put the source up publicly, so hopefully you\'ll be able to get at it sometime soon.

Well, the CVS has been down for like 6 weeks now, if it's not more. I just checked the status page again and it now says that CVS is completely up and running, now only the project registrations are offline  ;) So I also checked PS CVS, but it's still not dev-syncronised! :(

ThomPhoenix:  Btw, I've been posting a few snapshots here.  So, it's not like we've just been dead for a month and a half.  :)

BTW: according to information on CS pages, Crystal Space and CEL repositories are in process of migration to Subversion. Build guides will need updating soon...
