The possibilities I raised earlier were not so much to suggest that that is how I think PS should be run, but rather to indicate that I think it probably does need to be more explicitly addressed, for the concerns over under-aged players being exposed to sexually explicit material.  For instance, I have been propositioned by a player who I know to be 12 years old irl to engage in sexual behaviour - obviously I turned him down.  However, these cases demonstrate how PS currently has no way of protecting/preventing minors from participating in or being exposed to content that is legally questionable for their age.  I am not suggeting that PS should sanction public sex, but rather that more explicit regulations/guidelines need to be applied.

Thyme - regulations and guidelines can be made, but they can also be escaped by those who do not want to have them apply. Any 12-year-old can lie about his or her age, and I don't think we need to control what players do in private. We already have a policy on public actions.

Guys, it's funny in the beginning when you're making little jokes and remarks about your happy-fun-pleasant private memories, but for one this isn't the most appropriate topic in the world here, and two, I'm looking for serious suggestions about regulations and guidelines, if they are necessary.

I agree with the opinion that sexual content is not to be condemned as harshly as American public opinion or law does.
Yes, we are already on a violent site, as there´s lots of killing going on ;-)

But still, I don't NOT want to hear descriptions of "sacred" body parts while just running down Hydlaa road !!!
I do like to hear discussions though, and I think the /say command is much better than the /tell in most cases, it gives a more lively atmosphere to gameplay !

One possibility that jumped into my mind was:
a /whisper command which would have a range of, say, 50 cm.

Then we can whisper nice things into our beloved's ear, still with the thrilling possibility that it might get caught by someone else's ear.... But only If they manage to come that close !

I suppose the best suggestion that I can think of now would be a small label indicating which players are minors irl (of course there is risk of lying, but at least it would be mean that you legally tried) - so including year of birth in registration would be one way to do it... Though I'm really not sure what is reasonable to possible in terms of having that implemented.  Perhaps the best suggestion I can offer then, would be to talk with other online games and see how they deal with these situations.  

I agree that any kind of explicit sexual material should not occur in regular chat windows, however I am very concerned over the "as long as we don't see it, it's ok" attitude.  This creates risky environments where concerns such as Zobels', over pedophilia, become more possible because people don't really talk about age limits, etc. and can't really tell if someone is participating in a way that is questionable.  I know that personally, as a teen who played online games at the age of 14, I became targeted by a man who was in his twenties.  The game I played didn't address these issues, and that meant that no one really knew what to do with the situation when it came up.

Now this isn't to say that I think that minors should not be exposed to or engage in any sexual activity, but rather that there is a danger in allowing adults to engage with youth in sexual behaviour.  Mainly, that there is a high risk of exploitation, and taking advantage of minors. Anyway, I think I've gone off on a bit of a tangent, but I hope that some of my concerns are becoming a little more clear.  I think this discussion is really productive to have.  So I'm glad that it's happening.

Or  when people do not want to disturb others with OOC talk ... and if there is already a public policy.. then we dont need anything else.. But if you were going to talk about sex or whatever.. you should be joining a group. Most people who play this game seem to be 12-16 and may not want to hear about another love connection over the internet.

  You know you raise a some good points. I think that the responsibilities for children mostly belong with the parents. These parents should know the risks and chances with planeshift that they would be letting their children engage in. No way or how would my daughter be playing this game without me checking up on her. (This includes logs and fifteen minute checks on monitoring her game) The chat is to open and risks to great. I am a very laid back parent but I will not help put my child into a uncomfortable situation, or help expose her to cyber until she is old enough to make her own choices. Indeed the security in planeshift is not really there to protect children but I think there is only so much the planeshift team can do. Ultimately it is the parents who should be looking after their children, and not the PS team.

erm, well, as far as I can tell, that's not adult  content, that's just a horny little kid, I don't really think there's much that can be done about it tho,
whatever you do, don't add a chat filter, those always mess up and make everything unrealistic
you could always just have a reporting system (you probably do already)  you know, just send a screen shot in and then someone will deal with it as they see fit

and deffinitly, do NOT have an 18+ area, I assure you, the game will go in a very bad direction, and probably even make the non 18+ area have an air of perversion
