General remark: Speed
« on: April 30, 2006, 12:51:23 pm »
Hi,

I'm quite new to this game (name Feagul but I'll start playing a new character and some weeks when I start with some friends together).
Although I've played/and watched playing my brother (who has been playing this for quite some time).

I know a little from MMORPG's since I've played World of Warcraft for more than a year (release day - untill recently). And I've been playing other RPG's aswell (Morrowind, Oblivion, BG, NWN, Icewind Dale, Lionhead, ...)

I had one general remark for this game, which might be quite controversial...

The speed of this game is really really low. For me, sometimes a little frustrating.
Some examples:

-I get stuck quite often, but no offence it's only an alpha. So "/die" but than the missery comes: Death Realm.
I takes more or less 15 minutes for me to get out (and I know the way...) You get stuck in half so you need /die again, you fall down because there is just no light, for me the death realm is enterly dark, except for some rare spots I'm just guessing where to go (and lucky me, my brother showed me the road because I would been busy for 5 hours or more).
And if you finally get out of that black spot, you need to walk again till the point you come from. Some other exits and more lights will come I've read but for me it's almost impossible to play right now.
You might think; change you're contrast. Well, I did so it's on maximum now and I could play other games at 50%. (if you think it's a bug I got a radeon 9800xxl (Xt with only 128mb), running on windows XP and a Philips 107T monitor.

-Recovering is way to slow. If I kill and opponent (like a gobble or a fanatic)I'm low on health and need to wait for almost 15 minutes to continue.

-Fighting is very slow and not a real challenge... Start attacking; read a book, take a shower, come back and you're opponent is dead. Once I've been fighting a rogue for 20 minutes, when I did alt-tab I lost my target (which was only at 65% of it's health) and couldn't continue fighting (bug but ok it's only an alpha).

-Results of Fighting, the loot is quite poor, after playing 3hrs I can barely pay training, not to mention buying a weapon. Ok, 3 hours isn't that much but not really nothing.

-Travelling is quite slow too but ok...it's only an alpha :)

Greetings and a big 'congrats' on the game,

Ohtaror

To your first two points,

- /unstick first rather than /die

- Food ;)
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

try setting the gamma settings of the monitor.

There were issues with macs and the DR, changing the gamma helped some as I understand it.

Use /unstick instead.

-Recovering is way to slow. If I kill and opponent (like a gobble or a fanatic)I'm low on health and need to wait for almost 15 minutes to continue.

Recovery is wicked fast when you compare it to real life.  Plus there's the whole thing with how if you have enough apples, you can heal any wound.

Try fighting the tougher rogues or ulbernaughts and see what happens.  Duelling other players is also really intense the way combat is designed right now.

-Results of Fighting, the loot is quite poor, after playing 3hrs I can barely pay training, not to mention buying a weapon. Ok, 3 hours isn't that much but not really nothing.

You're probably fighting the wrong mobs.

-Travelling is quite slow too

Travelling is a big deal.  That's why people tend to stay in the same city or area for a long time, and you only travel if you have a good reason to.  Travel is supposed to be dangerous and lengthy.

Once I figured out the path out of the DR, I could practically do it blindfolded, which with the gamma so lower it practically is.  Occasionally I flub it and fall down, but most of the time, it's a 5 minute walk out of the DR at best.  If you're taking 15 minutes to get out, try mapping it out on paper or something so you don't have to keep thinking about where you're supposed to go.  You can also follow someone out.  The game does seem slow, but that's because it is mainly 'empty space' right now.  It's getting more full as we speak, though.  Even my originally cynical take on the game has softened once I realised the potential of a free MMORPG with this much style.

@BlackAcre: I know the way by mind but it's just way to dark so I can't see the ground where to go.

@Zanzibar: From the reactions I've read from you, I can understand you're some hardcore RP, with all respect :)
But a fight should take only a couple of seconds if you compare it to real life like recovering. How hard could it be to kill a rat ;), or even a man, if one or both are armed.
Yes some opponents are too hard but I can kill 70% of the opponents I meet (and I've never trained till now and only got 1 cheap axe).
But that's not my point, I mean you can mostly say after 10 seconds whetever you should run or alt-tab for the next 30 mins (and hoping that loot hasn't dissappeared ;))
And about the loot: I'm fighting rats because they don't make me wait for 20 minutes to recover.

I understand it's kind of ridiculous to 'recover' from fighting a rat (even a giant one) but fighting man-sized and larger opponents should take it out of you.  The few times I've been in fisticuffs with someone, I wasn't ready for another fight anytime soon, and I was a young G.I. at the time.

HP heal rate should be slower or stay where it is..
Endurance should errode much more quickly..

more emphasis should be put on herbs, potions, food resting and healing spells.

Ok now a lot forget about how magic is intefering with the speed of healing and recovering, you can use up your mana as magic only has a chance in pvp if both players agree with a magic duel or you are far from the player you are goign to kill and are running around houses so your opponent can't coem close. against the big mobs such as ulbers it takes a lot of time to kill it.

@zanzibar: u forgot to tell him about magic potions ;), the mushrooms also heals a good amount of health actually, (found near the magic shop)

I would hope that health potions are obvious enough that I wouldn't have to mention them explicitly.
