Linux Guild - Anyone interested?
« on: May 01, 2006, 11:34:00 pm »
Hi i would like to join or help setup a linux guild for users of linux. I just wondered if anyone was interested.

Of course we can use the idea of linux as well as what it means computer wise. The open source ethos, ethics, freedom etc - and we can talk linux talk also out of role if this is what other expect.

As there a less linux users i imagine it would be good to stick together.

we can have meetings in the tavern at set times etc and basically i'm looking to talk to others on what they want to set up, how we can go about it and about having some meetings in planeshift, possibly in the tavern or wherever to start talking about sorting this out.

let me know and also message me in the game - my name is Naylor

thanks.

I don't think a guild centering on subject matter that has been frequently politicized by Che Guevara worshippers and Woodstock attendees is a good idea.

And I run Linux. Go figure. :P

Please check the "Creating Your Guild" important sticky right at the top of this forum section :} Guilds on OOC (out-of-character) subject matter and formed for out-of-character reasons are a no-no in PlaneShift.

the idea is for users of linux to be in a guild together, within which we use a role play scenario as a group. although the group is tux or called linux we have it as an ethic holding group together so it's not out of character. it's simply a basis of the ideology of the group. we're like the anticapitalists of the scenario if you like as well as many other ideologies.

not only is it about common interests but there is more validity as a group to have a united voice than some other guilds.

My recommendation for you to take a look at the "Creating Your Guild" sticky remains. Please take a look to learn how to make your guild both interesting and acceptable for the community, because you got a rather difficult start here :}

*edited to add*

Your thread about this in the Linux forum was a duplicate, which isn't allowed, and a thread on a guild fits here better. Please make sure to look over the Forum Rules whenever you have the time.

thanks for the advice. i did read the sticky. i just wanted to talk it over with anyone interested so we can make something valid for the game. i wanted  to see if any interest. but i amount aware we don't want an out of character guild or anything pointless. possibly a back story of a belief system called linux etc. but i want to talk as a group and not just make ip something cheesey myself. if anyone wants to help let me know.

Good luck, then :} One more thing - try not to use words like "Linux" in your RP history or background if you are aiming for real credibility and immersion in the game world. Fairly straight-forward. Any references to real life only pull you out of roleplay.

I remember you asking me and Ponengey if we used Linux ingame. At least you made it OOC, but you should learn more about people you try recruiting. Even if they use Linux, you may be recruiting some newbie who doesn't know the first thing about what he's doing. Or, you may be recruiting an experienced roleplayer. Of course, you're more likely to get the newbie, because an experienced roleplayer would have chances for more reasonable guilds, and linux to them is completely OOC.

it's simply a basis of the ideology of the group

Its software. It has no ideology. Free and open source software is simply a wish of Linux developers.

As for the rest of it - since I do have a bit to say - I'll continue it in a PM to you. I doubt this needs to be dragged on here.

(sorry, I deal with this sort of thing all the time :P)

you can make a forum, but creating a guild based on ooc reasons doesn't belong in planeshift

hey sorry to offend everyone. it was just an idea for a bit of fun. whether we call it something different or whatever i thought the freedom, open source ethos may be appliable to an ingame group without. i've gone about it the wrong way asking people ooc but my heart was in the right place. nevermind - sorry if i was out of order.

I don't think you actually offended anyone, its just that most people don't see the point of a guild of this type.  Actually its been suggested before, and there was even an ingame linux guild for a while though its not around much anymore.  Us linux users stick together by hanging out in the Linux Specific Issues area of the forum and helping when we can.

I am somehow troubled by the linux requirement. It doesnt fit at all into Roleplaying to judge some character because his controller doesnt use the same OS. It's the same for things like age being a prerequisite or real life gender. What's next? Restricions for guild joining because of skin-color?

Although a guild based on the same believes, ideas, hobbies, etc. sounds reasonable (people with the same "thing" together in one Guild), I shouldn't create something in the world of Yliakum based on something which isn't there...

Your thought was good, but it would generate questions or discussions which shouldn't be here...  ;)

If you did this, I would so start a Windows Guild.
