Joining the Community
« on: May 07, 2006, 11:19:38 pm »
Hello, as you've probably discerned by now, I am new to the world of Planeshift; and while I am currently reading the guides, and trying to puzzle things out for myself, there is one thing that I know no guide will be able to tell me.

In such a large game as Planeshift, how can one assimilate oneself into the community?
What kind of communities are there here - do you have 'stereotypes' about eachother that would only be apparent in the game itself (negative, positive, or ridiculous but existant?) How does a new player generally find a group to associate with?
Also, is it so large a community as it looks?

... As a side note, if any of you is feeling particularly kind, could you possibly inform me as to how I can activate the tutorial? I saw it on my first time online, but due to computer complications, I had to close the program before I could complete the tutorial. Seeing as how the out-of-game tutorial makes me feel like a monkey with a nuclear device, if at all possible I'd like to activate it again. ^^; I deeply appreciate the help.

Hiya, and welcome to PlaneShift! :}

Let me answer your post backwards - the in-game tutorial really isn't much right now, since it has been implemented just recently and still needs a lot of work. You are better off with out-of-game guides and the aid of fellow players. We're friendly people, so if we can help, we definitely will!

As for the community, there is no other way to do it than to just jump right in. There are no segregations, no stereotypes, etc. Make friends with whomever you want, RP conflicts whenever you'd like - it's a simple but fun thing. The easiest way to be welcomed with open warm arms is to just roleplay :] We have a stickied guide here in case you haven't poked at it already, but basically acting out as your character will earn you many points and much love. This is what PlaneShift aims for. It can take a while to find a group to interact with, but that is pretty much standard anywhere. However, compared to what I have seen in other games, PlaneShift's community is by far the most open and friendly.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Another piece of advice would be to read around in the Guilds section of these forums, of course it is probably best if you get familiar with the game itself a bit first, at least the controls. Then you could look at our current guilds, read their history and see what they are all about so you can perhaps find one to join. Most, if not all guilds here on the forums are very friendly towards new members and will definitely help you get acquainted (sp?) with the game and its community.

It is usually a good idea to take your time with choosing the right guild for you though.

Very sound advice. If you want to learn something about game mechanics I can recommend talking to someone from The Vespers of Laanx. Lets not start a discussion here about relative merit. Talk with them in group or by tell and they are incredibly helpful to newcomers.Luck.

Haha, Drey's a troublemaker!

I don't know about joining a guild to get into the community.  Granted, it is a good way to get into the community and all, but after that, you may find you jumped into a guild too fast.  You should usualy scout out the different guilds first.

The best thing to do is to hang out either in the tavern or by the blacksmiths.  People usualy talk around there and most don't care who joins the conversation.

Keep your eyes open for Nurahk, me.  If he is by the blacksmiths, that means he is either AFK, or just seeing if any conversations are going on.  And I will always welcome somebody into a conversation I am already having.

Welcome to planeshift  Selete. If you need any help in game and I am around , I would love to assist. WARNING: planeshift can be very addictive, so be careful and enter at your own risk. :P [/b]

I half expected my name to be after the big Warning word.  It's nice to see a change.

And yeah, in some ways the guild community would be a good place to look actualy.  But don't go right in and join one.  The reason it's a good place is because most of the high rankers are people who have played for a while, can roleplay, and have good attitudes.  Search them out, they are probably the safest bet for a good conversation.

Oh, and any Explorers, because they just rock.
