Change the font in the game
« on: May 14, 2006, 10:24:08 pm »
I know that a medieval font makes the game beautyfull and with a particoular atmosphere, but it's something hard reading it.
Most of the times a simply font make things more READABLE and the game atmosphere doesn't suffer of it
I think that a font something normal (less decoration) and i suggest more anti-aliased.
(i'm not english so probably i'm writing something wrong :sweatdrop:)
I'm a graphic, a web-designer and i've studied page-layout for many years (about one or two :D).. there is two ways to fix this visual problem for me
one is making the font less medieval and artistic (something like the one of this forum pixel-black and pixel-white)
the other one is add gradients to the fonts (pixel-black pixel-dark-gray pixel-grey ....)
I suggest making it simple anyway, and i wants to underline that reading something written in normal font is extremely better that having the same text written in a medieval way but completely unreadable...
Hoping I've made few mistakes..
Thanks for your attention

Hiya Nevil :} Which font are you talking about? Is it the one used during character creation?

(Nevil probably means "Cup and Talon".)
__

You can easily do your own modifications. The definition files are either in XML format ( < font name="..." > ), or like Windows INI ( Variable = Value ). Most GUI XML files are in /data/gui.

I already tweaked several files, e.g. set up smaller font sizes for the shortcut bar.

Enabling anti-aliasing for fonts depends on two parts: One is the size of the font and the graphic window (the base size is 800x600, other sizes require some scaling with resampling), the other is the setting of your OpenGL driver (you may force FSAA if your ystem is powerful enough).

I am running this game at 1152x864 or 1280x960 and can read everything well. I even scaled the chat and shortcut fonts down to sizes "5" or "6" (depending on the machine and GPU).

Yes Karyuu is that one.. The other fonts are completely ok for me.... :)
Ligh can you tell me something more about changing or editing that file please :woot:
Anyway i suggest the font should be changed by the p-s-team... creating a new character it's the first impact with the game  ;)

I think the easiest way to change the file would be to just delete the original (...\PlaneShift Crystal Blue\data\ttf), then choose a font of your choice, move it to the ttf folder and rename it to cupandtalon.ttf :}

Or you could edit various files in /gui with a text editor. Files like birth.xml, charcreate.xml, charpick.xml, childhood.xml, etc., replacing cupandtalon.ttf with the other font of your choice. Make sure that other font is in the /ttf folder, still.

There is a default "fallback" font, currently set to "Arial". So if you just delete the font you don't like, Arial should be used instead. But - don't forget to never update again! ;) Or apply the same changes after each update.

No.  X-/

I like this font, and I can read it well. It adds a nice amount to the atmosphere.

You are happy without, I am happy with. ;)

I love cup and talon, and in fact (I hope mods and devs don't mind about this...) I have used it in school projects :O

I have a solution.

Planeshift Setup: Font Scaling: Font Chooser
:O :O :O

Yay~! Go me!

I totally agree with Nevil.
Text is important and must be readable.
Not only the colour should have a good contrast with the background colour, but also the dimensions and the format should help toward the readability.
Cup and Talon can be beautiful but not when the size is extremely little.
I would personally use something more readable for the small text and something more beautiful for the larger one. However, I would considering more carefully the contrast and also the coherence of the usage of the two kind of fonts.
