Best place and time to find roleplaying?
« on: May 16, 2006, 09:36:45 am »
Hello everyone :)

I downloaded Planeshift a few days ago and have been getting familiar with the forums and the general game world. I haven't played a MMORPG before, although I've been roleplaying for longer than I care to remember, and to be honest I'm thinking the roleplaying is what I'd like to be most involved in around here (though I'm learning to kill rats  and talk to NPCs with the best of them ;) )

While I'm already starting to use the /greet and viciously RP tactic to identify likely RP candidates (victims?) are there any particular groups I should seek out in the game world? I live in Japan so am at GMT +8, and tend to be on either morning UK time (early evening here) or late evening UK time (mid morning here) so advice about groups particularly likely to be hanging out in game at these times would be appreciated.

Are there any other tips you have for integrating into Planeshift's gameworld? Are there any locations apart from the Plaza that are good for finding roleplayers? The tavern always seems to be empty when I go in...

Many thanks (particularly to the nice dwarf who showed me the way out of the Death Realm, and the nice lady who gave me a dagger and coached me on fighting technique), and I'll see you in game!

The Dark Empire is the little floating part you can see, but below this, there is a huge part...

Hello and welcome.

I think you are right that GMT+8 is more the time for hunting and camping.  ;)
While i`m writing this it is 10:20 am in germany and there are 46 players online.
In eight hours this will change to about 130.
I don`t mean that quantity is also quality, but most of us are europeans i guess.
I know two players living in your timezone, they have the one or other sleepless night. ;)
Introduce PS to your friends, maybe you can help to build up a GMT+8 community.

Look out for a guild, it will give you more opportunities to rp.
The forum has a guild section and you could stumble over the Dark Empire promotional thread, just coincidental...  :-X

Greetings

Well you should consider looking into the Tavern, if you get lucky you can find a great community gambling, boozing or generally RPing around there.

hmmm not many places exept the tavern where RP people flock these days. It's useally simply best to put people you find RPing in your buddylist so you know who is online and ask where they are hanging out so it is easier to find them ;)

Also different per timezone where people hang out somewhat and thats not really my timezone I'm afraid so can't help you more then that I am afraid :)

I've personally never really found much to flocking together in the tavern for some good roleplay. I do understand that RPers want a place to gather and find eachother ... but what if your character isn't the type that goes to taverns? Roleplaying being focused on one place is just too restrictive for me personally.

What I do is simply let everyone know that I'm a roleplayer by using the /me command a lot. Whenever I'm mining I start out by setting my backpack down, getting my pick axe out and maybe even using a falka lamp, depending on where I'm mining. Something like that makes it very obvious I'm roleplaying to the people around me and almost all the time people pick up on that. They greet me, talk to me and we're off ...

This is just an example but it can be done anywhere and at any time .. you can attract roleplaying very subtly by simply making it clear that you are roleplaying. Just talk about some in-character things or use a lot of /me command actions to clarify what your character is doing. You're bound to run into roleplayers everywhere, not just the tavern but the trick is letting them know you're one of them ;)

I find that a lot of the regular role-players here are trapped in the mindset that all role-playing must be organized into finite events that have a pre-mapped out plot, a beggining, and an end.  It makes things difficult.  I think the advice others gave here is good.  Another thing to do is to find a good guild which has the same mindset as you.

Zan advice is very usefull indeed. Often simple actions like peeling an apple can get the ball rolling. For myself, it strikes me how much RP there is at 'unexpected' locations. Even during 'mindless spawn camping', I can often find people who 'make the best out of it' with interesting RP conversations. Simply play the game, there's nothing wrong with earning tria's and training skills. You'll find roleplay automatically, sooner or later. If there's rp going on on the plaza, you'll find out soon enough, because it's a central place and you'll get there now and then, even if you are simply training. Checking the tavern every so often  is also a good idea, but if it's empty, that doesn't mean no RP iis going on at the moment.
In short, don't search rp too much, play the game in an 'I'm open to RP'-way and be surprised by RP that eventually will find you.

Just talk to people, and look at what they are saying, most people chatting at all are roleplayers, get involved in whatever they are up to, and make sure your character has a back ground already. In general i find that the only place you have a hard time ( any time of day ) to find a roleplayer is the sewers. The arena has a lot of good roleplayers in it, but most are just camping there to train. If you start sharing a spawn and begin to roleplay you might find some there aswell though.

I'll have to be able to kill other things than rats by then :) I am the mighty rat slayer, oh yes...

Thanks peeps - I've been away with real life and have exams to revise for for the next week or so, but hope to see you in game in the near future!

Few advices for starting RPers:

Chardescription should be IC as much as possible, describe only what another person might notice about the char, nothing else. Write down all the stuff about the past,
family members and whatever on a paper and remove it from the chardesc. OOC stuff in the chardesc at the end of it and well pointed out.

It is good to have a shortcut with /greet and a general /me bows politely; but don't just walk by. Stop and talk to random people. You will notice after the first three sentences if the other person is interested in RP and/or has time to talk. Topics for first encounters might be where the other person is from, the high prices and inflation, what the guilds are doing recently.. and while talking, read the description of the other person and point out one or two things you just noticed in the desc of the other.

When you see a group of people, get near and listen to what is being said. Don't just greet everyone and ask about the weather.. try to find out the topic by listening.

Btw: By reading the RP sections in the forums, you might notice a few people who are active. Most of the RPers have their (ingame) names in their forum signature, as well.

Also, be mindful of OOC gossip and the people who engage in it.  It's a good thing to avoid, and the players who spread it might have ulterior OOC motives.

\\o// First of all welcome to planeshift and the coumminuty Gesene.

I find many miss the forest rogue as a place to check out for some roleplay. When I was first new to planeshift, I found most of my roleplay there believe it or not. Gesene it has been suggested a couple of times but I fully agree ...  just talking to people will help you find the roleplay you desire. Most times it is one of those, you have to be in the right place at the right time. My roleplays are never planned, and I find it better that way and more exciting. You can also dream up something about your character and try and play with that, getting people interested in something you have created. For example, maybe you are seeking protection because you have a super tough angry warrior after you. I find if you need help, people in Yliakum try to get in there and help as much as they can. This will help you make friends and help people see you as a roleplayer as sadly some in the game are not. Good luck. :)
