Issues concerning 0.3.014b
« on: May 20, 2006, 09:24:05 am »
I have been testing 0.3.014b for a while now and there are several things that I would like to point out, some of which may or may not have been pointed out before.
I tested both in WindowsXP and in Gentoo Linux.

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Sorry, the cat jumped on my keyboard and it submitted by accident ;D here's the rest of the post

I have been testing 0.3.014b for a while now and there are several things that I would like to point out, some of which may or may not have been pointed out before.
I tested both in WindowsXP and in Gentoo Linux. Comparisons may not be to the previous version, since I didn't play in a while, I might have skipped a few versions.

  - mouse aim seems to work better in Linux now for some reason (it used to be the other way around). I guess that's a good thing.
  - In linux I had fog ingame, i had NEVER seen any fog at all in windows. (I don't know if this is a weather related thing or a bug,..)
  - both in linux and windows I experience extreme lag in the arena. It's worse in linux than in windows (like, unplayable worse, 2 seconds between each frame or so), and extreme graphic bugs. As if the arena mesh is missing triangles here and there, or the normals are facing the wrong way.
  - The game runs faster in linux in small areas, and allot slower in large areas (eg the plaza). Ok, it's normal that the game runs slower in large areas like the plaza, it has always been that way. but it has NEVER been that bad. It used to be allot smoother for me. I get under 1 fps with 200MB video ram and a 3GHz cpu.
- In windows the game crashes on exit for me, or will not close at all and the process needs to be terminated.
- Random crashes (heh, nothing new) even with sound disabled.
- In windows (didn't test in linux) the memory usage of the game keeps increasing, suggesting memory leaks (nothing new either). At some point the memory usage remains the same but virtual memory usage increases. Whenever the game lags in the arena like i mentioned before, and a part of a wall or ceiling dissapears, i noticed 10MB jumps in virtual memory usage.
- Sporadic crashes when casting flame burst (nothing new either, I think)
- The hourly crash, as mentioned before in this forum. (the random crashes i mentioned before seem to be unrelated though)

That's about it I guess... In linux the game is pretty much unplayable for me, since the fps drops below 0 allot. Strangely enough, when i'm in the tavern for example, fps seems to be allot higher than in windows.

Video: Intel 915g w/ 200MB video ram (ATI driver), onboard.    (ok it's a crappy video card, but it can run openGL and direct3D just fine, hell it runs UT4 at max graphics with decent fps,... not comparable to a good nvidia though.)

the other stuff in my box,.. here's the lspci output:

Operating system for windows was Windows XP Corperate
Operating system for linux was Gentoo:
Linux azure 2.6.16-gentoo-r7 #3 SMP PREEMPT Fri May 19 03:53:30 EDT 2006 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

[edit]
Note: I was also using the latest video card drivers in windows (the i915 driver in linux was the one that comes with the 2.6.16 kernel, and dri for X driver was the one that comes with modular xorg 7.0). And latest DirectX in windows. The linux version was the binary posted on the website (as opposed to compiling from source.)

Regarding the extremely low fps, yes I did set adaptive distance, lower resolution, etc,...
[/more edit]

[more more edit, hell i've got nothing better to do]
note: Ojaroad works fine for me, unlike what people mention in several other previous posts, the grass is working fine and smooth for me, other than looking ugly, speed's just fine, and ahellofallot faster than the plaza or anything. Ojaroad is one of the fastest running open area's for me.
