RPing: A small request to people who duel.
« on: May 24, 2006, 12:43:26 am »
A lot of the time, I get challenges from people or I get involved in PVP, and once it's over, there's a flurry of /tells that happen.  Most of the time it's OOC.  Some of the time, it's IC (borderline) but not really IC because telepathic communication between the death realm and Hydlaa doesn't make too much sense.

So, here's my request:

Please don't send tells if you lose an in-character fight, especially insults and all that crap.  First off, it doesn't belong in the game anyway.  If you have a serious OOC complaint about someone, that's what Game Masters are for.  If you have an IC complaint, then it can wait until you see that person again.

Mostly though, it's just plain disruptive to the RP atmosphere.  Tells are out of character unless it's a whisper, or some sort of magic.  They shouldn't be used except in rare cases, but the temptation to talk to someone with /tells seems to be very strong after losing a duel.  There's a lot of mallice surrounding it at times, so chances are people won't stop just because they're asked to, but I think a certain basic level of decency and courtesy would be in the best interest of the Planeshift community, and it would save a lot of grief surrounding use of the ignore function.  The ignore function is at least as disruptive, because if you want to protect yourself from OOC tells, you have to go through the process of unblocking the person everytime they're around if you don't want to miss any legitimate chatting that's happening around you.

This kind of thing happens more often that I think is appropriate, and I think it would be very easy to avoid if people practiced a bit more maturity.

How can you explain this logs, Zanzibar?

*at the plaza before the sword-tournament*

(23:50:12) Quittaa says: i don`t think that Shalmaneser would win a single fight without potions
(23:50:18) I looks at shalmaneser and mutters.

(23:50:33) Shalmaneser says: You Quittaa would not make a single sound if it weren't for that tongue in your head. Perhaps I should cut it out?
(23:50:35) I grins slightly at Quittaa

(23:51:07) Shalmaneser says: Hiding behind false names and false accusations... you're a coward. [He spits at the stone road.]

(23:51:20) Quittaa starts laughing "try it Shalmaneser!"

(23:51:40) Shalmaneser tells you: You wish to duel?>

(23:51:51) Shalmaneser smiles.
(23:51:55) Shalmaneser says: Did I hear you right?
(23:52:00) You tell Shalmaneser: sure
(23:52:07) Shalmaneser says: By the fountain then.
(23:52:09) S says: come on shalmaneser!

(23:52:17) Quittaa says: all right

*Quittaa killed Shalmaneser*

(23:53:43) N says: [Shal got pwned XD]
(23:54:00) Quittaa spits on Shalmanesers corpse
(23:54:52) Shalmaneser tells you: Nice... everyone saw you cheat.:)
(23:55:12) You tell Shalmaneser: [even with potions you can`t win a duel, what a shame]
(23:55:12) S says: nice job quittaa
(23:55:22) Quittaa says: thanks
(23:55:43) Shalmaneser tells you: You cheated, and everyone saw you.:)
(23:56:01) You tell Shalmaneser: what was my cheating then?
(23:56:16) Shalmaneser tells you: You used energy arrow like there was no tommorow.
(23:56:20) You tell Shalmaneser: i must have missed that
(23:56:44) You tell Shalmaneser: you should train it
(23:57:01) Shalmaneser tells you: I have level 28 crystal way.
(23:58:06) You tell Shalmaneser: i would be interested in a way to increase the damage of the energy arrow, i tried several methods, but nothing worked
(23:58:18) You tell Shalmaneser: tell me when you find a way
(23:58:28) Shalmaneser tells you: No.

*at the arena*

(00:03:12) Shalmaneser shouts: Quittaa! Where is she! Where is the cheater!

(00:03:28) Shalmaneser shouts: A shame to her guild! A shame!

(00:04:43) S tells you: did you heard that? somebody is looking for you :)
(00:05:04) You tell S: yeah, i killed this braggard ;)

(00:05:42) You tell S: he used potions but couldn`t win

(00:06:02) Shalmaneser tells you: Where in blazes are you?

*Shalmaneser enters the arena insulting me*

(00:07:14) N glares at the Elf, "That's no way to talk to a fenki!"

(00:07:49) Quittaa says: [shalmaneser is already on my ignore list,m i don`t mind ;)]

I didn`t hear exactly what he said because the /ignore, but i heard it was not too friendly

Greetings, Quittaa

Yup. Your log is highly editted, but I was still in error to talk to you using /tells after you killed me.

Edit:  Several things that "Quittaa" said were taken out of the log.  Also, she was interupting a conversation I was having with a friend, and that's why I was short with her, though the conversation does not appear in the log.

In my defense however, I will say that "Quittaa"'s cheating was in character, and I tried to talk to her about it in character after finding her in the arena.  Instead of RPing it however, she made a public fuss about using the /ignore function infront of a large crowd of people.  I find that rather distasteful, and very disruptive. Such things have also been mentioned as a do-not from time to time.

Yup.  Highly eddited your log may be, but I was in error to talk to you about it after I died.

The only things i edited are the names of bystanders and messages that had no connection to the duel and what happened after.
(and there were many for it was in the arena at a tournament day)

Show your log file if you mean that something is missing.

You were in error...how often you are in error?
Is your thread a joke?
You complain about others but act "in errors"?
I would love to see other logs where you were "in error"
It would be the same as if i would start a thread with the title "stop using energy arrows in duels"
People would say: "umm, you always use energy arrows in duels, how can you complain now?"

Greetings, "Quittaa"

(edit: added "" at the name)

You made an account just to post this junk?  Hmm, seems to me like this confirms my theory that "Quittaa" is an alt.  You were browsing this forum using your regular account, saw this thread as an opportunity to stir up trouble, so you immediately registered "Quittaa" and made these posts.  So, who's the man at the wheel here?  Do we get to see, or is it going to be a mystery?

I've already said that talking to you was a mistake.  I'm not sure what else you're after?  I've made mistakes in the past and I'll make mistakes in the future.  It doesn't mean I can't make suggestions and requests for the betterment of the community -  it means that I'm human.

Don't let this thread get out of hand.. Please turn to PMs if needed. I don't like "jumping the gun", so to speak, but I don't think it would be a weird request to make at this time. Let's address the original topic of the thread instead of forum posters.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I'd like to move this topic back to its original intention... The problem that I've seen lately is people dueling at the DR spawn point for "training." Not only is this ooc but its also extremely disruptive and very annoying. Your dead already... whats the point in dueling? It comes down to some macho testosterone fest... and if you really need to prove how tough you are you can always take an ulber by yourself.

That's a bit off topic, but there are many who would agree with you.  I don't think it's entirely OOC though, and the point of it is training.  Still, dieing can't be a pleasant thing so I guess that makes it OOC because most people won't train that way even if it's not going to really kill them.

It's been suggested in the past that an option is given to spare someone's life after you beat them in a duel.  I think that will solve that particular problem.

for rp purposes, when i duel, i yell to them "i challenge you to a duel!" and use /me to say "skylros throws his gauntlet to the floor". adds depth, if applied correctly.

Training at the spawnpoint hmm well have to say I haven't seen that happen often. The few times I die it's pretty empty there. The one time I did see it however they were roleplaying dueltraining but duel training that wasn't lethal. Ofcourse they only told me thsis after I asked what they were doing there but still.

Don't see how this would be annoying though even if they did not roleplay. If you walk by it's not like you will see more then one duel.

Anyhow back ontopic. If the duel was IC I don't think one should harass someone OOC with tells. Duels to often are already to much about OOC reasons and not IC. If we look at the log submitted earlier for example it's pretty unbelievable in my eyes that people would really fight to the death over this but this does happen a lot.

Duels should be used more in an IC way and then tells afterwards will be a lot less and a lot less OOC harasment aswell I would imagine.

If you want to know the things Shalmaneser said, but Quittaa didn't hear:

Shalmaneser greets quittaa
(00:01:38) Shalmaneser says: You little mongrel!
 (00:01:48) Shalmaneser says: Quittaa!
(00:02:06) Shalmaneser says: You wanted an honourable duel, and I entertained you! And this is how you repay my gesture?
(00:02:10) Shalmaneser says: Cheating with magic?
(00:02:31) Shalmaneser glares at the back of Quittaa's head. "And you won't face me now, either?"
(00:02:35) Quittaa says: [shalmaneser is already on my ignore list,m i don`t mind ;)]
(00:02:37) Shalmaneser says: A coward adn a cheater, both?
(00:02:45) Shalmaneser says: Look at this one!
(00:02:51) Shalmaneser says: She hides behind false names to act on old grudges!
(00:03:14) Shalmaneser says: She cheats in all she does, yet talks of honour!
(00:03:23) Shalmaneser says: Remember her name, all of you who are wise and nobel!
(00:03:35) Shalmaneser says: Remember her name!
(00:04:07) Shalmaneser shouts: Quittaa! Scoundrel, coward, and cheat!

Not that offensive as was implied.

It was edited because half of the things inbetween were Proglin's tournament announcements. I witnessed the entire thing, and nothing was edited as far as what you and Quittaa said (and the proof is, where it says "N:" stands for Nilachi, which is my character)

Shal, what you are is called a hypocrite. You say something that shouldn't be done, but you do it anyway not following your own advice. But I do agree with what you say, despite that you do it too, people always send me tells when I beat them in a duel. When I beat Peacer, he sent me a tell shouting...nothing but curses, I'm not going to post the log. It's annoying, but the battle wasn't really IC, though.

I don't think duel training in the deathrealm is as ooc as is suggested here. Since you are in the deathrealm ( wich is not the same as dead ) there really isn't much to do except getting out. And in that place dying isn't half as bad as anywhere else. You are already in a cursed environnement and you are back there right after you died. BUT duelling at the spawnpoint is a bit crappy, there are ton's of places in the library where you can duel without it being disruptive for others.

No, you are wrong.  Quittaa cut out the parts showing that she was interupting a private conversation in order to insult my character.  You also do not have access to the tells that Quittaa and I exchanged, so there are things that you can't possible know about for sure unless you were standing over Quittaa's shoulder or if Quittaa is your personal alt.

that is actually not true... and why you won't post the logs is an easy solution to it, look at daveg's reply in teh alt topic...
