Super Sexy Guitar Talk Thread
« on: May 28, 2006, 05:22:21 am »
Well, we needed one.

Heres the deal, i have some 490R's and 490T's off of a gibson sg standard (sexy). I have Dimarzio Designed V6 Humbuckers in a solidbodied, mahogany ibanez. Maple neck, gotoh tuners, stop tail, you know the deal.

So should i put them in?

I got this guitar for a steal price (200$) and i use it more than the gibson SG, but i got burstbuckers put into it so i figured i would save the 490's. Its an Ibanez S- Classic, small strat body style, archtop, very thin (like the SG) I have been considering it for a while, but should i drop the stock DiMarzio's? And then, what should I do with them, i have a warlock sitting in a pile that i could put them into, but is that even worth it?

This is fun and super sexy isnt it?

I skipped your post, but like the subject. What music do you like playing?

The burstbuckers are a good choice in the SG.  They're excellent pickups, and their brightness works in that guitar.

As far as the ibanez goes, ibanez guitars are really 'meant' to work well with dimarzios when they're made of basswood, but mahogany gives mixed results.  They tend to use many pieces glued together for the bodies, and they even use agathis at times.  It gives a rather cold sound which might be warmed up by the gibson pickups.  I'd definately give the neck pickup a chance, but you might end up with something too muddy and bassy for your liking.  The problem with that particular gibson bridge pickup is that it has an alnico II magnet which a lot of players find to be too laid back and vintage sounding.  They might still be improvements over the dimarzios.

I'm guessing that your SG is a faded model or studio model?

The best advice I can give you is to try it out, and if it doesn't work, there's no harm done except for the time you put into soldering the connections and setting everything up.  If you need instructions on how to properly wire it, I can help you find the proper diagrams.

I wont have any problem with vintage, the "v" in V6 stands for vintage anyways :P

The gutiar is one piece of mahogany, and it sounds nice and bassy on the neck alreaady (which i like).
I want a good wintage-ish sound on my guitar, so thanks for the help :)

And i might want those diagrams ;)

Edit: Its a faded special

In my experience, people have different understandings of what's a vintage sound, and a lot of people who think they like vintage sounds actually like modern sounds.  Just experiment.
