New plane to shift to
« on: June 18, 2006, 08:42:49 pm »
I was thinking about adding new playing field to the game of planeshift. This suggestion is one for the far future and a rather huge change but something that I think would be a very unique attribution to the game.

Right now we have two realms, Yliakum and the Death Realm. I was thinking about another realm, only accessible by powerful magic, which opens up a whole new range of possibilities. Lets call it the Twilight Realm for now (don't feel like thinking up an original name at the moment but feel free to make better suggestions :p). This would be a realm that lies somewhere between Yliakum and the Death Realm .. between life and death. It's a world of energy which the practiced mage's mind can enter. Only those with enough skill can go there after performing an elaborate ritual.

This plane could look like the normal world but with different colors and have a bit less solid shape. I'm thinking something along the line of giving everything a sort of shiny aura and/or some fisheye vision when you're in this plane. You can also see the people who are still in the normal planes but then as shadows and you normally wouldn't be visible to them nor able to communicate with them. Physical damage would be unknown here and weapons don't serve any purpose. In fact you wouldn't be able to equip any physical object. Instead only magic can be used here, be it at a much greater effect and maybe even with completely different results. Physical health would also be replaced with mana and mental skills determine your abilities in this realm. There would be NPC's unique to this realm, the peaceful and harmful kind. Some creatures could even be present in both realms at the same time, they can see and attack players in Yliakum as well as this Twilight Realm. Another thing about this place would be that you could travel a whole lot faster, perhaps even fly around freely. Of course your body wouldn't be moving, only your mind would so while you can explore this realm quickly or move somewhere to meet up with others, you can't move your character's body and inventory. When you leave the realm you'd be back at the same place than where you started out. It could be possible for highly, highly skilled mages to completely move to this realm. This could be used as a way to teleport from one place to another in Yliakum, more or less .. or even to move from Yliakum to the Death Realm without really dying.

A new realm like this can also bring a whole new set of skills with it. Like the ability to see those in the twilight realm and communicate with them without actually entering the realm itself. Of course a skill that determines how easily you can enter the realm, at a low skill you'd need to perform extensive rituals with many rare magical attributes while at higher levels you could more easily access this place. At very high levels it could even be possible to move someone else there as well, maybe even against their will so that a mage can kill off a great warrior by moving the warrior to the Twilight Realm. There could be skills that allow you to move around faster in there. A skill that lets you change shape in this realm or summon non-physical weapons and attributes. And so on ...

You can really go anywhere with this but I think that's enough for now ... in short, I'd like to see a magical realm where other rules apply and only the mind matters.

Um... ok... trippy...

Yeah, simply put, the game is called PlaneShift... I expect a few other planes to shift to... eventually, in the very distant future.

The problem with posting details of "distant future" wishes here is that inevitably they will be buried deep and far in the Wishlist by the time they can be actually considered :>

Regardless! It's fun to dream.

Very true, however I consider it better to have them burried deep down here where anyone could find them again, than having them burried deep down in my own mind where I won't even be able to find them back under the meters thick layer of dust. ::)

I just had to write it down really.

Have no fear, neko is here.  I'm throwing together a nice summary of all the wishes listed here, just for that reason.  Just gotta finish cleaning up the place first.  Don't worry Zan, your wish won't be forgotten.

Hmm, wasn't there a "WHY Rule" somewhere around?

Just one question:
What would be the purpose of such a realm?

I guess that would be an alternative realm for casters. I thought what Zan meant is casters are fairly weak against thrusting and bashing weapons and therefore to make them more superior in common combat he wanted a seperate realm where casters could go and have fun. I'm guessing there'll be an extreme melee realm too if i've understood it right.

So, it would become another hack-and-slay game where all the specialists have their little world for their kinds.

I think some balancing would serve this better than splitting this world apart.

Ehh .. not even close to what I was thinking actually. If I could have it my way there would barely be any fighting going on in there, instead it is indeed a realm for spell casters to experiment, train and learn things .. not to kill and fight. Guess it was my mistake on putting the emphasis on superior magic and no other forms of combat existing there. No physical presence means no loot either, yanno.

Me kinda lika your Idea a lot ;D

It would be real groovy to have some sort of "tripping-world" where everybody is happy and no one gets hurt ect.
But you still have to look out though, If you go tripping in to that realm standing next to a spawnspot for a überulber you're quitte "the goat" (totaly screwed) because what will happen if you get killed when tripping? do you lose your mind?
Or whatabout you just had a fight with your wife (IC) and to forget it you're going on a trip tripping to the tripping-world, and your wife dares to challenge you? Are you gonna get back, do you automaticly accept because you're tripping or your wife just have to wait a while till you're back, so i could be a hiding spot for trouble (IC)...?
And if people (I mean the chars you can play) can get into that realm why not the rogues, gladiators or even some animals like rats and Ulbers?
And one more thing... Won't it just be a place where frustrated wifes or husbang go and cheat because their wife/husband can't go there because they are skilled in slaying ulbers for dinner?

That were most of my questions ::) But still I like it a lot :D ;D

Péace out!

well, yea, i like this idea sort of.  It is good, but might also be used in other ways than intended... also, im not quite sure how easy it would be to make this, becuase that is some intense coding there with the shadows and all.

EDIT: actually... im not sure exactly what PS uses for code but im sure it could be like most others with the if someone is at pos blah place sprite shadow at otherplace. only that isnt exactly how it is obviously im just saying...
I fear that the world is getting more and more lazy with every passing day...

Common sense left on the 15th ship we sent to outterspace...

I'd say if you get attacked and hurt too much in that realm, your mind just returns to its body with a completely drained mana and mental stamina bar. It might even take a while before they start recovering. As for being attacked while 'tripping', as you so nicely put it :P. The body of the mage would still be around in the other realm so it could be attacked by NPC's. I wouldn't let them automatically accept duels though since that's just asking for people being harassed but they shouldn't go enter this realm in the middle of a trepor nest.

Your questions gave me a couple more ideas .. the time you can spend in this realm could be dependent on your character's mental stamina. It will slowly run out and when it's empty your mind goes back to your body in the normal realm. A second idea would be some faint warning system you can get while you're there, when your body is in danger (or thinks it is). Think spidy sense but less obvious :D This gives you a chance to try and quickly return to your body before you're butchered. Of course it could also be triggered by an angry wife who just wants to yell at you.

Btw if your wife challenges and kills you when she's angry with you I suggest you both go see the marriage councelor in Hydlaa or find yourself a better wife :P
