What happens to the character when you are logged off?
« on: June 19, 2006, 01:32:07 pm »
Greetings !

I am new to Planeshift, so I have a few questions I need answered before I jump into the game.

1 - What happens to your character when you are logged off? I mean, do you have to find an Inn or other place to stay before you log off, so your character is safe and will not be attacked or killed during your time away from the game?

2 - Because this game appear to focus more heavily on the Role-Playing aspect, (and because I am new to this game) is it common practice, or is it ok to include short comments to express more accurately the feelings of one's character. Here is an example of what I mean:

other player says: You look tired old friend. Did you encounter a monster while on your way here?
tyhvor says: Indeed so it was. But my battle axe did its job and landed square in its chest (smiling, raising his axe in the air)

The (smiling, raising his...) comment would give the other player a more accurate idea of tyhvor's response, would it not. Is this kind of writing ok, or is it uncommon or maybe it should be avoided?

Any and all replies are most appreciated

Welcome to PlaneShift!

1. When you log of your character isn't anymore in the game world. So you can log off anywhere. But if you want to RP (role-play) more then you could have some place to log of that isn't OOC (Out of character).

2. You can say things like:
* Arangol raises his battle axe and smiles
(The  /me  command translates into your name)

Then in the chat it says:
Arangol raises his battle axe and smiles

And it's very good to do that kind of things, because it helps much in the role-playing.

Hope this makes sense and helps you.

Yeah. When I need to go i say something like:
"I have a room at Kada-el's. I'll see you tomorrow"
And i go to the tavern, go upstairs and quit when inside a room.

1. If you're RPing, best to find an inn or shop to disappear. If you're not, try to log off in a place that's safe from monsters/NPC attackers. I once accidentally left my character in a rogue-infested area, and got killed almost as soon as I entered the Planeshift world. Not pretty.

2. Roleplay text is awesome. It makes Yliakum and the people in it much more alive and realistic, although sometimes a lot of typing gets tiring. Don't stop writing little details like that even if other people do. They're just lazy or not into RP at the moment.

Just two examples:
Quote
/me yawns.
/my eyes close.

Try for yourself. You will get used to it quickly. And you may probably like to set new shortcuts into your shortcut bar:

Right-click an empty shortcut button, give it a name, enter the required commands as reported in the Command Reference in Appendix A in the Player Guide.

Example:

[ Goodbye ]
Quote
/me waves to $target and leaves.

Just a note on logging off:  If you log off mid-battle, your character stays in auto-pilot combat until the battle ends, one way or the other.  This is to prevent cheating by panicking and quitting when you're about to die.  (if it was an accidental logoff, you'll need to wait until the fight is done to relog)

Thanks everyone !

I think I am going for the role-playing way when leaving the game world, even if it isn't neccessary. Much better to find a realistic way to leave, like going to a tavern or Inn, I think.

I am just going to finnish the background story of my character, then I am off into the fantasy world. It's looking very interesting, and more so than a good number of other free mmorpg I have considered joining, but did not.

Welcome to PlaneShift, tyhvor :)

Feel free to ask whatever questions you may have throughout your gameplay - we'll do our best to help you out if you need it.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

A warm welcome to Planeshift!
It is good to see people that before joining bother to read the player's guide and actually understand what RP is.
I hope you'll enjoy your stay ;)

I dream for the day when/if we can own homes.  I had one in another MMO I played.  It was fun to show people around and decorate.

Do I hear a crafting furnature skill?

Nah, didn't think so.

Back on topic.  I used to try to log myself out in my house in that other game.  More RP flavor to it.  Not needed in PS, but still fun to do.  I like to stay in the rooms by Thorian above the tavern.

If you ever need help in game just send a /tell.  I don't mind helping new people.
