i am new to this type of posting; i hope i do it well.
i for one downloaded PS client months ago, but only activated it for use 2 weeks ago.
as i recall, it took weeks, not minutes for me to get the download, being unfamiliar with any of the XXtorrent applications.
for various reasons, the download did not work properly and getright was not allowed, so i kept having to re-start from scratch. i am ready this time with utorrent and am willing to give it a go.
mostly, i want to sincerely thank everyone for the new friends i've made, the developers for their active interest in the wants of their players, and the people in the platinum mines for putting up with my singing.  :)

The devs still haven't answered the question of why they didn't leave PS online and leave our server running.

I know they needed it down for the test, and also for adding the updates.

BUT why not use a test server, or create one.

It's not like they CAN'T, there is nothing stopping them.

And if there is I'd like them to name it.

Frankly, it is bad policy to take off a game for extended periods of time.

I'm sure they lost a good 100 new users or something like that.

So please, devs, answer, why you haven't created some sort of test server?

Please don't dodge my question either.

Thanks for your time, looking forward to the update :) :woot:  :D \\o//

This already has been answered, just the answer is a bit complex. Only in this very minute, I can think of these few reasons:

1) There should be only one server, to use not only academic test cases, but real data.

2) There must be a shutdown at least to convert the database - which is closely related to 1)

3) It has been stated over and over: We are testers first, and players second. The "job" of all registered "players" is technology testing.

Thinking further, I would probably find more.

@Datruth

And I am quite sure that it is a question of funding - as in new server(computer), bandwidth and many other things. Have you read the previous posts?

Oh, no, wait sec. On second thought I agree with you. The devs are all evil, EVIL I tell ya.  ;D Lemme get my hands on one

I'm sure they lost a good 100 new users or something like that.

But we haven't lost any good users, because good users understand and have patience :) It's not like the team is losing money from those who haven't the patience to stick around.

Laanx is a test server, and you are the main testers. This is a simple, minor inconvenience that the community is very capable of dealing with, and surviving. If not playing a game for a few days is that devastating, people need to rethink their lives ;D

Simply put, Laanx is a test server and we don't really care if it's down for upgrades for a bit.  We don't care that you're whining, and your whining won't make it magically get setup any faster.  Just be patient and go do something else for a few days, please.

People come and go from planeshift all the time, and will continue to do so. As long as there are testers, it doesn't matter. Most of these people if they did leave for the reason, that the dev's shut down the server to the public so that they could test and make sure everything was working before bringing it back up for the public to access ... then they weren't good testers in the first place. They have gone through many updates and client changes and people still come to play. I remember when the NPC's were down for almost three weeks. Guess what, there are still players from that time still here in planeshift. Patience is a wonderful gift. It is a shame not everyone has it ....

I remember the NPC server being down for a while at one point nit sure if it was what your talking about, but I remember it had been down for 3 days or more at one point. I actaully think its kinda fun when it goes down cause it causes more people to go mining aor go to the plaza to have some fun RP.

An update!

I think qualify as an oldbie (hanging around since end AB, early MB) and you know what? You get used to the downtime, you get used to waiting for a new client (especially for a bit more exotic systems, like my AMD64 GNU/Linux), you learn how to laugh roleplayingly at bugs in game.

I won't lie - I do miss people who stopped playing for one reason or another (Ralin, Kada-El, Xenia and Xylonias for example), I also miss some characters of people who are still around (like CadRipper and Havena). But people come and people go, there's nothing you can do about it. But let me tell you - players who really enjoyed PlaneShift usually come back after a bigger update, if there's nothing bigger stopping them from playing ...I'm sure most of those who I miss would be still playing (or again), if it was just an updating thing - most of the people I miss don't have the time to play anymore or another big reason, because of which they would stop playing even if the server was always online and updates went smoothly all the time.

Remember: it's about the quality of the game, the world and the characters ...not about the quantity of the players.

That "you're tester first, player second" thing is something you have to consider, but rather in the way of "if you see a bug, explore it and report it nicely, but still enjoy the game" - as oposed to playing and just bitching about bugs.

It is important, for avoiding further problems after the update, to test as best as possible the server.
You would get even more annoyed if instead of being the server down as it is right now, you would be able to play and the server would crash every 5 seconds or you would get stuck every time you move in a certain location.
There are reasons, of course, for which certain choices are made. Of course, players might get tired, but at the moment PS is not a finished game, fighting for the number of players (even though, the number of players that are active is a source of satisfaction for the people working on it), but it is still in full development!

It takes a lot of time to actually put up another server with all the data. And we would need to have a place where to actually store such server. As far as I could remember, there was a period during which we had one. Now it is not like that anymore and we can't surely try our best on our machines.

Just wanting to watch this one too.  How is the testing going?  As well what is the anticipated wait time for the new client download?
