Some things I (partly) missed in the explanations above:
  • Files to download using bittorent are split in many small pieces. The order in which you download these pieces does not matter. Your client will keep track of which parts you have. This means that if you stop downloading, and restart the client later, it will just go on where it left
  • As soon as you have pieces downloaded, you start uploading as well. Also, you will not only be downloading from people with the full download. Azureus, the client I use, has a nice hypnotic visualization of this. An example: 10 people start downloading from the only seed, but they will download different pieces. Next, they will download a piece from the seed, but upto 9 (theoretical) pieces from the other downloaders. After that, upto 17 (or so), etc. So even from the beginning, downloads may become quite fast. With hundreds of people sharing the bandwith of the original seed, it may take a while until everyone is up to good speeds though, and they are related to how much you upload. So the total download speed of all downloaders starts at the upload speed of the original seeder, but will get much larger quickly, and keep growing as long as people do not stop uploading.
  • If you automatically startup the client when you start your system, download and upload will go automatically without you noticing. At some point, you will just have the full download, and only be seeding. This may not be the case for all clients, but I would be surprised if the more common ones do not work like this.

I would be seeding fully, as I have been with the previous client (I think I saw 40Gb uploaded last time I checked), on a system that is always on, unfortunately it crashed and is not running anymore :(.

I think this one has been answered before but seeding simply means leaving it up once the download has been completed.  So as soon as your download is completed, you are a seeder.

I will be seeding from two comps with about 62 -70 kb/s max upload so around 1mb in total
but for people new to bittorrent and are using "windows xp sp2" might need to apply a patch for a file called TCPIP.SYS, that file limits the amount of outgoing connections to 8 where in sp1 it was left unlimited. The patch on lvllord's site increases your limit to 50 and should make your attempts with bittorrent more successful. I dont know if we are allowed to post links to the site here, so search for "lvllord" in your favorite search engine
