Is it worth playing this game?
« on: July 01, 2006, 07:10:29 pm »
Hey PS gamers,
I have installed the game, but I can't play the game riight now , coz it is down for updates and stuff...
From what I've heared, the game is still in alpha stage, and many things have to be worked out..
Here is a very clear question.
Is it worth to play PlaneShift?
Because, it is still in alpha stages, is it nice to play it? Is it playable in a decent way? Are there enough people to play with? Is there lag? Are there major bugs etc etc..
Please give a nice argumentated answer to my question, so I can decide whether I will try it every day to play the game, or remove it straight away now
Thanx a lot,
Heezen, from Netherlands

well the answer to all the questions is yes.

worth though is a relative question. that and you're talking to the converted, so weight the answers accordingly.

i wouldn't come in expecting anything near the big commerical or many other finished mmporgs.

the easiest answer is to wait a few days for the updates to complete and give a run for a few days.

though i'm sure other people will be able to exapnd this aswer

See this icon:  :beta:

It's addable because the game is in Beta-stage. And is it worth playing? Why do you think thousands of people are playing it? Mostly there are about 100-150 players online at the time. Sometimes you crash, but you can nearly enter the game inmediately. More and more features are getting implemented, but you can play it already as a simple completed game...

this is what i have found in two weeks of playing

1) the graphics are clear and the artwork is great.  it is in 3-d with several modes of viewing including a freerange feature so that you can see all around you as in rl
2) there are usually 50-180 people online at any given time.  considering the stage of developement this can be just a bit crowded in popular places IMO
3)  i have some lag issues and crash issues which i believe are mostly due to my slow IC
4)  bugs are probably the primary reason we "testers" are here.  i have seen a quick response at solving them.  and bug hunting seems to be a popular passtime
5) compared to other online games i have played, everquest (too expensive), diablo (a rehash of pc game full of kids who only want to duel), neverwinter nights (just a rehash of the pc game or nearly impossible to figure out what they expect you to do), i find it refreshing
6) as with any online game, the best or worst part are the players.  in PS i have found wonderful people across the globe to interact with and with very few exceptions, have found them to be polite and helpful.  although getting information out of most of them is like pulling teeth  :)

Hiya Heezen,

If you have already installed the game and are willing to go through either another download, or a bit of a wait to use the game updater, I would highly recommend that you hop in and see what PlaneShift is like for yourself :) I think the graphics are surprising in quality for such a project, and they are being improved and added quite often. Though at the moment players are limited to combat, mining, and the very beginning of crafting, it's still quite fun. We do get bugs, but anything major that prevents gameplay is fixed ASAP, and every two months (as just now) we get an update with literally hundreds of fixes among new features.

The biggest attraction however is the community, and roleplay. Roleplay is vital in PlaneShift, for this is what everything else circles around. Friends are very easy to make, and there are tons of guilds to make them in. If you're looking for a game that you can mostly solo in, you may find yourself bored pretty quickly - it's the interaction with others that gives everything more life.

I've been with PS for two and a half years now, and I hope to stay for many more :) It just has an addicting quality, even at this incomplete stage.

We're mostly IC so you'll have to ask in the according manner(This game is aiming on Roleplaying) To speak OOC(ask about gameplay, someone's living or how cute his/her sister is) is brackets [] OR (even better) ask the person in tell /tell whereverIknowyoufrom (message) if you want to ask about quests, don't do it in forums and only do it if you really have to, that's about everything, oh, and don't make GM's mad, they can turn you into nasty things.

That's about all of it, good luck mate :)

Hey PS gamers

... Now did you really expect anyone to say no? Especially looking at who you adressed your question to.
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

i know this is off topic but someone needs to let you know anyways :D the reason why the server is down is because theyre testing a new client so when the server is back up youll need to download a new client so you may as well go ahead and delete and uninstall planeshift and wait for the new client. hope fully itll be up by tomorrow  :whistling:

Well, i will say, coming to the PLANESHIFT FORUM to ask if its a good game to play will get you some biased answers  ;) . But seriously, its a very good game to play; its very worth it. Though it may be pre alpha, its very good even now, and if you just think abotu whats instore, it kinda hooks you in. Its already pretty expansive in my opinion, not to mention fun and addictive. The community is very strong and welcoming. the worst thing we have are powerlevelers...and compare that to Runescape's Ebay weapon salesmen and Planeshift looks angelic. Its really very fun and interesting.

Then you're  probably asking for the wrong information or you are asking devs about new developments. A good reason to play PS is the people who are always there to help you at any time...

Not as many people as you would like to think are that helpful to new players in all honesty. For example a new player joins and interrupts a role play by asking where does he sell rat hides repeatedly. It is not uncommon to see him/her ridiculed/ignored for unknowingly asking such a thing.Whilst roleplay is the main objective of Planeshift it is so different to all other mmo's "thankfully in that respect" new players have to hit the ground running which i feel is wrong.A learning curve doesn't come from reading the players guide as many may not read which you can't hold against them.

well being new doesn't make you rude but interrupting a conversation is rude. you shouldn't play without reading the history of yliakum or the guides, you can but you shouldn't. it's just common sense... and as Zorbels says, "it's not so common" but still, we should encourage it. i don't think there's a mean crowd out there but a very patient one but if you join the game you should make an effort too (heck, you can read the guides and rules as you download the game).

In my experience this game is well worth it. The community is wonderful, you won't find a community like this anywhere. The game play is still in development as you know, but it can be very challenging. Especially the quests, in some ways good and others bad. My suggestion is read the players guide. Tour the main website and some of the guilds websites. Those sites will give you a good idea of what to expect. Also ask yourself if you like to roleplay, because this game isn't about killing as many monsters as you can or becoming a super strong character, it is about creating a character and enjoying the world, and the possibilities it holds. you might want to also check out the community story section in the forums. There are some wonderful writers to be found and stories that might give you an idea of where to start with your character. Good luck to you and if you see me in game, by all means come and chat.
I've been outside, it's overrated and the graphics suck!

Yes, tis a very fine game indeed.  You may find that your no longer able to play after a while, but even after four months, you won't be able to keep youself away from the game (like me :P ).

Because planeshift has a rather small comunity compared to other MMORPG's, we tend to be a lot more friendlier towards each other, and help everyone else out.  I'd give it a try and meet some of the people, or if you can't wait to meet some of the people, try going onto the IRC channel, and having a chat (Be forwarned though, the IRC channel is not moderated, and the conversations can become somewhat... abstract to say the least. ;D ).
"I'm not really what I once was to you. I can't be."
"You are."
"I'm as much as I can be, that's all."
"Enough for me."
