Since we definitely know Zorbels is Zorbels, should there be a case of "name-theft" it can be dealt with appropriately. Unfortunately GMs cannot extend that courtesy to everyone, as we really have no way of knowing who made "Bill Smith" first if we've never seen that name before. Chances are if you're a fairly prominant figure, your name will be defended.

thus another reason why we should know about the wipe in advance. a "save your name" thread can be started for those who really want to make sure theirs is safe (yeah, there'll always be mean-spirited cheaters and names that are come from literature, other games or movies have a higher risk of getting stolen unintentionally but at least we can prevent a few sad surprises this way).

but yea, i mean, i know im not very pronounced, or well known, but i am attached to my character, and i would not liek it to be stolen. That thread for saved names is a good idea.

A thread wouldn't achieve a lot, really. Someone could come in and "claim" a name in such a thread of someone who never visits the forums, and they wouldn't be able to defend themselves. Besides, you can start such a thread now - I don't see why you have to know of the wipe in advance to do that.
