Download page needs editing
« on: July 02, 2006, 08:37:45 am »
The forums are full of posts concerned with conserving bandwidth for the download of version015 -  I dare say a couple of gigs have been wasted already by people downloading 014b and hoping to use updater to get 015 - telling them not to even on that page won't prevent it from happening, in fact the discussions about **torrent all but encourage using it to test their torrent client -- wouldn't it be wise if someone at least made the links DEAD on that page ??

Already proposed I think, and generally most agree - if the release isn't out tomorrow, Talad will probably remove the links. He's not around at the moment.

The whole PlaneShift site needs to be redone with new links and a proper navigation bar, cause you need to go on certain pages to find certain links which aren't displayed on the "main" pages.

And I don't really know why it isn't totally redone ... I saw Karyuu's website and it is absolutely GREAT!!! and I don't think she would mind redoing www.planeshift.it ... but it's up to her.

We had an individual, Netty, who volunteered to redo the PS website :) The person has disappeared for some time though, and I presume that life just got in the way. Being the "Hey.. can I do that?" person that I am, I started a redesign as well, but it's more for fun than anything. If we don't hear from Netty in a several months, I could probably tackle something serious.

Thanks for your comment, Josellis :}

You're welcome ... why wait? You're website is absolutely great and I never saw anything like that, so I presume you made everything from A to Z. If you start now, it will be sooner ready, if you start later, well it will mean more posts on that same thing

and gratz for your five thousand four hundredth (5400th) post  \\o//

Even if there is a good chance that there will be a rollback to 14b because 015 has too many problems, the links to 14b should have been removed as soon as the decision to shut down the server for an update was made - it doesn't take that long to remove text (and links) from a webpage.  I have seen posts in several places  of people who downloaded 14b expecting to jump right into gameplay.  You know how it is when someone is looking for a new game - damn the torpedoes and the details, give me the dowmload now! - and they find it in the upper-right corner - then get angry when they discovered they wasted time and bandwidth.
So the webmaster/site-editor has to make two edits instead of one - it's nothing compared with what the DEV's are going through - if the admin for that page falls on a dev, that should be changed too.

You can't expect too much from the staff, they are already all doing voluntery work and some are even spending money on it so that WE can all play for free. It is real that some people will get angry because they "wasted" some bandwidth, but luckily, we have something called the "updated". It will download only the things which need to be downloaded so that we don't need to download a second time the things we already have on the computer.

I heard that they will be many new textures and the map have changed, this would mean that the heavy things will be to download again, but you should still save some bandwidth.

What I mean by that is that the people who download version 0.3.014b didn't waist they bandwidth because they will be able to update they version to 0.3.015 without using too much bandwidth

[note, the following text won't have any sense since Karyuu removed Restore's post]
Restore, please BE PATIENT!!! Stop complaining, you are playing at a totally free game which is run at the expense of the DEVs, so the least you can do for them is to stop comlaining all the time

Talad is the only person who has access to the website to make modifications for now. I'm not really sure if this is up for change. The mistake of leaving the old downloads up is really just that - a mistake :) With all this hurby burly around the release and us trying to fix things and add things and test things and package things, little details like that (in the Scheme of Things) can often be forgotten. We'll definitely try to avoid having this happen with future releases though.

*edit* Restore, your post has been removed. It was off-topic and asked a question that I have already explicitly answered in numerous previous threads.
