In the last movie of lotr (The Two Towers), Gimli says on their way to Helm\'s Deep, \"You know, the female dwarves have beards too, they look a lot like us, sometimes mistaken for men. And you thought that dwarves just sprouted from the ground?\" bla bla ya ya ya and then it goes on and on and they find the orcs.

Movies aren\'t very accurate.

I\'ve seen a female Dwarf pic for PS and it has no beard.

Regarding the gnomes i think they played rather, nasty tricks on people, not nasty nasty but not exactly fun for the recipent. They sortta never realy cared for the out come of there prank as long as it was amusing. i think the child stealing theme was placed on alot of the little people, even faires if insulted would steal a newborn from a person who had wronged them and replaced the baby with a changling. most little people where though of as rather beneign in nature, but dangerouse if provoked or annoyed.

Pitty modernisation has made them what they are now... damn Disney

dwarves and tree-ents
« Reply #18 on: February 08, 2003, 04:24:34 pm »
Tolkien didn\'t invent Dwarves, but he did create what we currently hold to be the fantasy model of Dwarf.  Small, ugly, mean with an axe and hazardous on the kiwer extremities.

Tolkien spent most of his life inventing multiple dialects, modern, ancient, and pidgin, of Qenya (Elvish, though my spelling may be off - I\'m doing this sans reference) but didn\'t bother to mention how the dwarves procreate.  I am firmly of the unfounded beliefe that this is what lead to the dwarves disliking elves in general. ;)

Tree-Ents were invented by Tolkien (Tree-herders) - EQ and D&D messed them up rather horribly, but these things happen, and I\'m sure Treebeard won\'t gather up his cronies and tear down Hasbro or Peter Jackson.  Then again, it DOES take them an awful long time to make a decision.....

A dwarf without a beard is just a midget.

The dwarves are important in norse mythology, Im norwegian and consider myself more knowledgeable about this than most of you, no offence. The dwarves made the chain which the Fenris wolf is held by. They also made a lot of other things. They live under the ground and are great miners and weaponsmiths. They seldom go outside their mountains. I don\'t know about the beards however.

No offense taken. If you know more about, tell us. Like I said, I was more into Greek mythology, but I forgot alot of it, read it from an old encylopedia that we found in our house. It was before computers were like they were now, and when you looked it up, they had pictures of ENIAC and stuff. Very funny.

Female dwarvens generally grow beards, it\'s as simple as that. Now, if a particular dwarven clan has a habit of shaving their females, this would of course be a possibility. I\'m sure, though, that most dwarves from other clans would think these females were ugly as Hell, as dwarves take much pride in their beards, male or female alike. :D

Heh. Probably.

Hairy Dwarf: Look at that freak! Shaved! It\'s unnatural! If the Gods didn\'t want us to have hair theey wouldn\'t have given it to us!

Oh Well. Nothing is safe from vanity. Even abnormal hair choices.

I am likely to know more about Norse Mythology then everyone here, Norwegian or not. I\'ve studied it intensively, and one thing must be said. Dwarves were maggots that grew from the corpse of Ymir, which is Midgard(our earth). Them along with trolls and other creatures that grew from the armpits of Ymir were banished from walking during the day, if the sunlight hit them they would turn to stone.  The female dwarves don\'t have beards in Norse mythology. There are very few mentions of female dwarves.

Maybe in Nerd Mythology(D&D) they might.

I\'ve heard of Ymir from a Disney show called \"So Wierd\". My sisters watch it and one episode was about Trolls, and it mentioned Ymir. Why does it not suprise me that Trolls were at one time maggots? I guess orcs are too since they quall at light. Interesting.

Yeah the chain was made from the footfalls of cats and the beards of women, or something like that.

Germans also had Dwarves. I remember something about the Erlkin.

And Canute was the Celtic or Dane king wasn\'t he?

My worries about lady dwarves
« Reply #26 on: April 20, 2007, 04:55:25 pm »
Hi there!

In generel: Races are built after some common stereotypes "dwarves have beards, elves have pointy ears" It is nearly always the same. No problem about that! But in my opinion PS's chars shall NOT be exactly the same like Tolkien's (sure his books are one of the greatest wihtin fantasy literature, btw) or other myths, settings, films, books, whatever.

Appearence of female dwarves and their population:

Compared with all other females in PS they appear as chubby, grimmy, little girls. Both male and female players who deside to play a female character want to have an attractive one. Thats why there are such less dwarf girl around. I dont speak about turning them into short sexy pinup girl but just give em a bit more cuteness. E. g. friendly smile or a light correction of their body shape for more female appearence.
I think that will increase the number of lady dwarves in Yliakum. "Dont let the dwarves die out within the next 3 generation!"

A bit of reviving a long dead thread there, buddy.  Not something that is exactly smiled upon.
All the same,
No point in making all the girls in PS overly attractive.  I like having the dwarves as an exception really.

All the same, it's a matter of opinion, and when it comes to that, Talad's opinion and the opinion of the settings team rules supreme ;)

Thats a false premise. What if it was changed and someone wanted to play a "chubby, grimmy, little girl"?

I really, really don't think everyone wants to play an attractive character. About half of my characters are old, ugly and cranky.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(
