Boring mining/fishing
« on: January 28, 2003, 03:56:06 pm »
Hmm, I\'ve been thinking. In every mmorpg I\'ve played so far, the productive skills like mining and fishing were always very boring and repetative to do, while fighting was generally much more interesting.

Perhaps there should be more to those skills than just clicking rocks in planeshift?

What do you suggest?

Moving your mouse back and forth like you are swinging a pick axe, then getting down in the dirt and rocks to pick out a few pieces of gold or something from larger rocks.

I\'d prefer the easy way so you can make yourself some weapons then get to the fun fighting by selling them to noobs and watching them fight big monsters with them  :D

Well, I haven\'t really thought of something (yet), but in your case you would spend only a short time mining and the rest fighting. I can imagine you would prefer to do things quickly and easily, so maybe there should remain a way to do it the normal way. However, there are also people who choose to mine for hours to get rich, or just to get their skill up and that\'s when the rock-clicking gets very boring.

I think those people shouldn\'t mine only because they need the money or the exp, or even worse: because they\'re addicted to making progress with it, I think they should mine because it\'s so fun to do :)

Exactly, but the problem is how?

how about the rare chance of finding an ancient artifact or the chance that a rock monster will pop out and attack you? that would make it interesting.

Mining is something that I refuse to allow in cause it is just too much of an anoyance with no change in how it is done. Sure you have different locations you can do it in but it is always the smae thing just different yield. Mining will still be part of the game cause ore and jems and even minerals are needed but it will not be a trade.( that is if i have my way!) Expect it as a job but not a trade skill.

As for fishing there is much more to it than just clicking on things. You have to make poles, make lures, make a tackle box, and so on and so on. Also in fishing your fish are used in many areas from magic to brewing. In magic you take the scales off the fish to use as reagents, you can use the many types of fish in different cooking recipies, and ever heard of fish wine?

I have a small suggestion. Has anyone played Mario Golf? Y\'know how that little bar goes back and forth, and the farther back you swing the harder you smacked the ball? Maybe we could implement something like that for mining. Like, the harder you swing, you find bulk things like metals, or marble, but making small taps gave things like jewels. Just a thought. As for fishing, it would be more fun if it resembled Animal Crossing.

wow, they even made fishing interesting... I never really thought you could do that in an mmorpg... wow...

as for that mining system like in mario golf...I dunno, that would get kinda annoying sometimes, like when your just standing there all day doing that thing, when you could just sit somethin on your mouse button and it would just do it on its own all day, or maybe they\'ll do that to prevent that 8o  :D

well, not many people play Animal Crossing, but in AC, you cast your lure, and you have to get the fishes attention by casting it in front of its head, the fish are symbolized by fish shaped shadows on the water, the bigger the shadow, the bigger the fish, once the fish starts approching, you get ready, then, it will grab on, and when it does, you have to let go of the button to reel it in, however PS doesnt have a rumble feature, so it might be a tad harder for the people who tend to zone out easily... *raises hand*

OK, this is a bit of a wild idea... I dont know if I like it yet, just doing a bit of brainstorming,

How about, when you want to mine, you click on a rock like normal, then instead of being told that you have failed or succeeded (like in many other games), you are taken to another screen with a 2D mini-game (or maybe a small window that only takes up part of your screen).

In this mini-game, you would play for iron ore, and maybe the occasional rare gem. I\'m not sure how the mini-game would work... It should simulate actual mining... Maybe some sort of searching game... Being an RPG, the mini-game should not be a \"twitch\" type game.

The same thing could be applied to fishing, where you would have to try to lure a fish to take your bait... again, it should not be a fast, twitch type game.

Check out this thread on Mini-games from a while back

Maybe people who work harder.. should get more money, like in most games. Mining/Smithing/Fishing/Cooking gets you more money then just fighting, because it actually takes work. If you don\'t want to work, go fight monsters and loot them.

Paxx and I have had several very lengthy conversations about how smithing and mining, fishing, farming, etc. might work, and suffice it to say, I am more interested in making those systems than in writing combat based on what we\'ve come up with.  :-)

Stay tuned for more details...  ;-)

Sounds good! But does that mean you are already working on those systems and you will not accept any suggestion from the outside anymore? In fact I have a pretty creative and radical mining system in mind, but if you\'re not even going to consider it, it might be a little futile for me to describe. :D

Describe away.

I am always interested in new possibilities, newer and fresher ideas?.
But simply saying that you should have it be fun does not inspire much thought among the devs :-)

We are hoping to have trades be more interesting then combat?but some people go for one and others for another, at the same time I want the economy of the game to be intertwined with combat and crafts. So the fact that fighters keep the mines clear of goblins makes it easier to mine, for example.

But in the end much of this will be talked and writien about, but we won?t be sure how good it is till we get it in a working environment and then add features (or take them away due to lack of coolness) or introduce new systems threw trial and error.

But keep the ideas coming, that we don?t respond does not mean we don?t read things, just we don?t feel like responding, or that there is nothing to be gained in the thread by responding?not that we have not read it.

While I am a fan of using the mouse for swinging and such, that would be a complex system to do in a non-exploitable fashion (remember we are an open source project)

I think that the fishing system should be like it was in Dark Cloud where the rarer fish were only found at certin tmes in cirten spots or hidden spots and could only be cought with  very special bait that was obtained from a special monster  or something and then  that fish could be used to actually make a part of a wepon or something..... Just an idea
