[Guild] The Vespers of Laanx

EDIT FROM MOD:

guild under new ownership.  see post here http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=30874.0
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The goal of the Vespers of Laanx is to enrich Yliakum for ourselves and other folks in Yliakum by making Laanx a more palpable presence in the land. We are an order of priests of the faith of Laanx. With a rich history that grows richer by the day we are a proud, strong, and stable member of the community of guilds in Yliakum.
Guild ranks
Laughing Chorister
Together, they reached the lower end of the column and discovering a rocky niche that contained the luminous and faceted extremity that now gives life-energy to Yliakum. Talad and Laanx realized the nature of the crystal and wanted to create a prosperous dominion with people to worship them. Other gods, older and more powerful than they, told them about great tasks they would have to perform when their worshippers became ready to follow their directions. Blinded by the possibility of creating a new world, the young gods Laanx and Talad didn't ask any other details, or pay much attention to the warnings. Therefore, they used their powers to enlarge the niche and created the huge cave comprised of eight levels. –History of Yliakum
Beginning on the path of understanding, Laughing Choristers report to the Musing Missionaries directly. This is rank asserts and recognizes the youthful exuberance of Laanx as a young goddess full of adventure and the urge to create. The duties of a Laughing Chorister include study and labor. This is a trial period to test one’s dedication and commitment to Laanx. There is a great deal of work to be done, no one know this more than the Chorister. As the temple moves toward greater wealth to be able to facilitate its quests and thereby draw in the talented of Yliakum the Choristers play a huge role. The Laughing Choristers shall wear the White robes of Innocence marking them as a Laughing Chorister the Vespers of Laanx. There are many responsibilities one must tend to during this period in their ascension along the path of Laanx.
Musing Missionary
. . . the others spontaneously created a clergy and faith based on the Book of Names. The head of this second group was a handsome young man named Galeran Tarbius, endowed with endless charisma and with an overwhelming will power. Laanx was immediately interested in him and one day he appeared to him. When Laanx left Galeran, his eyes sparkled with mystic fury, and his body glittered of the chaotic power of raw magic. Galeran had the power to transmit his fanaticism to the most possessed of his followers. In their opinion, Laanx was the god that had given new life to their race and therefore had the right to claim their lives whenever it was necessary. Galeran led the Xacha to Yliakum and there, they settled on the first level and began immediately to use their ancient knowledge to built an iron temple consecrated to Laanx. –History of Yliakum
Now beginning to act as an emissary for the church and taking more responsibility for church training, the Musing Missionary will wear the Yellow Robes of Wisdom’s Fire. Musing Missionaries should spend about half their time at the temple either in study or aiding the Laughing Choristers and half their time abroad in the world gaining experiences and money to bring back to the church. Musing Missionaries are meant to learn the history of their god and work in the interest of the church. Time spent over a furnace or at other crafts is to be spent contemplating the might of Laanx. Musing Missionaries have the primary goal of training the Laughing Choristers. Musing Missionaries will lead walking tours of Yliakum and aid in filtering recruits.
Scintillating SoulGuard
. . .she drew the incommensurable power of the azure crystal as much as she could and, in secret, mimicked the rituals of Vodùl to give life to some creatures reproduced in her image. The new people matured and reproduced, they were nice-looking and had a quiet behavior, like their creator, and they called themselves "Lemurs." –History of Yliakum
The Scintillating SoulGuard is to reflect upon the life giving element of Laanx’s nature. This is a time of intensive magic training. Laanx draws on the chaotic nature of magic but his priests do not have that option; training in the ways is seen as a means of assuring that the clergy of Talad do not have an edge on Laanx’s priests. The Scintillating SoulGuard has primary duty to the temple, and will spend a majority of their time at the temple. They must facilitate the charity work. Scintillating SoulGuard wear an ornate brown cloak interwoven with white gold thread in the pattern of Laanx’s symbol all over the cloak, their description should reflect this fact. The Scintillating SoulGuard shall be chaste.
Tendril of Chaos
Seeing this, Laanx became jealous of his old friend: Talad had the harmony that he had lost and at times Laanx felt the need to have it back. Observing his regular and quiet face, Laanx remembered with nostalgia the time in which he was a beautiful lunar god. He got angry, cursing Talad and all Yliakum, and swore that, since Talad made him an unhappy and jealous being, he must suffer the consequences. During his dull waiting, Laanx investigated the column of blue light above Yliakum, trying to find a way to increase his power by using that infinite source of magic. Since Talad wanted to have mastery on glyphs, Laanx would control the pure and violent power of the Crystal. –History of Yliakum
After so much concentration on one’s personal development the priesthood turns outward. Tendrils of Chaos embody Laanx’s romance with chaotic magic. The offensive glyphs will be learned to prepare for what conflicts emerge. Tendrils will be wild and chaotic. They shall refuse no duels, and travel the land ready for what comes. They shall refuse no drink. The Tendril of Chaos Rank is social in orientation; getting to know people spreading the faith by being knowledgeable, powerful, and creative. They shall have their weapons drawn at all times. Their clothing shall be the hides of their kills. They shall explore. They shall be passionate and untamed but not rude or brash.
Illuminatrix of Folly
Laanx and Talad were Gods before the races ever existed in Yliakum. Laanx and Talad were beautiful and harmonious; they were inquisitive and always looking for new knowledge to enrich their eternal lives. Laanx was a tall and perfectly shaped female with long, white hair as silky as the threads of a spider's web. Her lunar skin reflected the azure beams of the crystal and refracted the light into hypnotic patterns as alluring as her dancing, ruby-colored eyes. A thin silver band clasped Laanx's left ankle. She was evanescent, cold and yet yielding, light and ethereal like the evening air. –History of Yliakum
This rank is for the remembrance of happy times in the life of Laanx. 25% of an Illuminatrix’s time should be spent tending bar at Kada El’s and handing out swords to the new and beers to the old. Getting to know people and being jovial and even silly are paramount in this phase. Have fun act a fool. The Illuminatrix of Folly will wear bells and the clothes of a fool intertwined with the symbols of Laanx [ones descriptions should reflect this /me juggles, chuckles, jingles, and your rhymes and prayers should be bound]
Crier in the Dark
[/i]But Laanx was not beautiful anymore and she fell down into a deep depression that shattered her heart like a mirror. Mindless of Talad's pain in causing her harm, she denied her being, her femininity, her people, and drove away the harmony from her heart. She retired to wander in the Stone Labyrinths, and many Lemurs went with her. She dressed in a thick red tunic and shaped a mask without features to hide her features. In her exile, she wrote the Book of Names for, even if she was confused and her mind distraught, she did not forget her desire to be worshipped by the people. Hence Laanx, the Masquerade God, wild and inflexible, began to brood over what happened.[/i] ––History of Yliakum
The Crier in the Dark is meant to reflect upon the sadness and isolation Laanx felt after she was disfigured by Talad's carelessness. Crier in the dark undergo an “age of sorrows” must be silent making no attempt to communicate with anyone for a period of three months [game time, two RL weeks.] A Crier may trade. Criers will be expected to walk about targeting guild heads and heroes. Criers in the dark shall wear rags and garbage as their dress, they might wear bones through their skins or dreads, but in all cases are foul smelling, miserable, wretched symbols of poverty and all manner of weakness. One Crier might limp, another drool . . .
Baleful Inquisitor
-You don't know what you did, Talad. It is not possible anymore to be One. I don't know you, and you don't know me. Go away and do not annoy me anymore.-
Many other times Laanx rejected Talad's entreaties to reconcile with him. Talad's insistence seemed insulting to Laanx, who was already annoyed in his painful isolation. Laanx forgot the millenarian friendship with Talad and sought the loneliness even more deeply in the bowels of the earth, heedless of the large number of Lemurs that followed him, worshipping and offering gifts to him.
––History of Yliakum
The Baleful Inquisitor is meant to reflect the bitterness Laanx has felt in her hard life. The mood of a priest at this time is to be dour, judicial. Baleful Inquisitors duties are to be the scourge of the guild keeping everyone honed and in tune with the will of Laanx as set down in the Book of Names. Baleful Inquisitors shall also look outside the guild learning all the can of the other religions and entering debate or even combat to advance their ideas. Baleful Inquisitors shall wear black robes with silver borders in patterns forming the symbol of Laanx. A Baleful Inquisitor may at any time at the will “force reincarnation” on a member of the Laughing Choristers. The Laughing Chorister must then cheerfully resign their character and come back into the guild as another race with a similar name. Alternatively the Laughing Chorister may leave the guild.
Whisper Juggler
In that moment Laanx became aware of the presence of his followers, and he was stricken by their faith and ingenuity. His heart became a little softer, and he gave his people many powerful and useful things to brighten the cave and make the lake and its shores a place to live. The Lemurs multiplied rapidly, built the ten towns of Kadaikos, and they became a prosperous and numerous populations. ––History of Yliakum
The Whisper Jugglers are high priests of Laanx; they dress in the colors of the temple of Hydlaa and compose the sermons with Sharven. Once a week, a Whisper Juggler must give a prepared sermon from Sharven’s pit. A Whisper Juggler’s sermon is prepared with the aid of the Monarch of Fools, and is meant to spread the word of the faith and the workings of the church. An awareness and explanation, in terms of Laanx’s will, of current events in Yliakum is expected from these Sermons. Fire and brimstone love and affection all are acceptable sermons, funny is acceptable as well but it must be really funny. Whisper Jugglers will handle all in guild disputes. After one year [real time]. A Whisper Juggler may petition the Monarch of Fools to start another temple. If the Monarch approves the Juggler’s request, the Whisper Juggler shall move to another location and enjoy the full funding of the church and an alliance.
Monarch of Fools
When the Xacha began to build the temple to Laanx, Talad felt control of his people's hearts slipping away. ––History of Yliakum
A Monarch of Fools typically dresses in a rich robe depicting scenes from the life of Laanx; the design is mock-regal motley down to pointy shoes and jesters cap. The monarch also dons a mask of his/her/its own design to honor Laanx's disfigurement. The Monarch of Fools may at any time mimic the powers dress of any level of the clergy. The Monarch will oversee all changes to temple life and handle molding the church with the times and the needs of Laanx. Study of the Book of Names will be a primary consideration for any Monarch of Fools.
Flagrant Fanatic*
In the Stone Labyrinths, the Masked God realized that the two portals had been created by Vodùl's magic powers. Laanx asked himself if in future he would be powerful enough to create something similar, and ambition and greed persuaded him even more deeply. ––History of Yliakum
This is an off the chart guild rank. This rank is earned only after being a Monarch of Fools for one full year. The Flagrant Fanatic may Kill in the name of Laanx without question, may recruit (with the aid of the church elders), May preach guest sermons, in short they may do as they wish within the spirit of the faith. The Flagrant fanatic may dress any way they wish and even join other guilds to promote chaos and misunderstanding. No lovers of Talad or his priests, the fanatic will undermine faith in Talad at every opportunity. The Flagrant Fanatic may do anything they wish in the service of Laanx. They can call upon the church to aid them in 3 role playing events a year. Fanatics are also expected to advance the faith of Laanx where possible, and go to the far corners of the Yliakum to that end.
*Credit to Father Sengus for inspiring this guild rank--
The current members are a dynamic and active group of roleplayers dedicated to enhancing themselves and the world of Yliakum. We have no stated alignment, but Laanx is likely Neutral Evil; while this does guide the manner in which we engender our church, our members are of all alignments.
Wanted now are players who can aid with the website development and those who are committed to the stated goals of the faith. Vespers of Laanx are non discrimanatory in almost all regards, no bias on the basis of age, sex, race, class, gender, or sexual orientation will exclude a player from membership. Idiocy however is right out! No dolts, simpletons, plebians, droolers, skeebs, bed-wetters or pantywaists will be permitted to join. Please apply if you are a talented roleplayer or are dead set on becoming one. If you do not know the history of Yliakum backwards and forwards or are not interested in it, do not even try.
Certainly a guild truly devoted to helping newcomers. I experienced this firsthand when I was new to PS. In fact, it was Xillix who directed me to the Rangers of Yliakum. \\o//
Rolf Blacksmith looks at the partly colorful, partly chaotic agglomeration of fanatics and can't help a big grin.
He already looks forward to the missionary folks he'll probaly be bound to turn down and the incidents about to emerge around this cult.
With recent pressure from various factions the vespers will move in a more combative pose. The vespers is now welcoming those more martially minded.
The Vespers ought not be thought of as anything like a religion you might encounter on onther planes. Our Message, our motives, are all completely different, we still have rituals, prayers and the like . . .but we are more akin to rugged battle clerics, witches, cultists or shamans. Our current mebership includes rangers, mages, duelists, spies, miners. We are held together by a powerful compulsion we share: Make the name of Laanx ring forth in every hollow! We also share a drive for the self perfection needed to face the chaos of the universe. Laanx encourages physical, spiritual, perfection, wisdom in all things an individual mind can cope with to face the chaos with complexity, and to weild oneself as an agent against all that is droll. Talad's folly was due to a certain weakness Laanx does not enjoy in her followers.
As one can read above, by the time someone has earned the title of Whisper Juggler the will have played various roles as re-enactments of Laanx's life, they will have been social, added to the lore of the game in some fashion, but each cleric will do so in his or her own way. Combat skill is a trademark of our guild as well and we regularly compete in Proglin's Tournaments, often the whole guild. When you have come along far enough I will train each member myself even if they come to best me.
[most importantly we have fun doing it, there are a lot of chances for good roleplay in and around the temple, and out about in the world as a Vesper. We have good relations with many many guilds and not so good ones with others. the overall ooc attitude is loose and light with me somewhere ranting in the background about what the Vespers should be reading . . .]
[I feel that being an order of priests might lose us some potential roleplayers who have a misconception in terms of what a Laanx priest would do when compared with a priest in our world, the two are not alike.]
[Search Vespers on this forum for more . . .]
To answer the question some people ask - I left the Vespers because of a few reasons:
1.  Farren was continually referred to as a priest, when in fact he is NOT anything of the sort. He was, and has been, and will be for as long as I desire to think, the bodyguard of Xillix. He is a ranger, not a priest. Killiy, get that through your head!!!!
2.  When Farren joined the Vespers, he was madly in love with Xillix. That has changed, so he is questioning his true motives in joining.
3.  This is the one that truly made the decision. After intense training, Farren stopped wearing the Vesper clothing... He wore NOTHING to signify him as a Vesper. NOTHING!!! Yet people he hadn't met somehow magically knew that this man dressed in his personal custom leather armor [http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/400/farrensmaller5on.png] was a Vesper... It was very frustrating, and I understood that you couldn't expect everybody to read your description, so I quit the Vespers, but I still fully support them.
The guild is doing well, we are a tad poor due to recent influx of new skill to train and a lack of donations but we are flexible and will adapt. I sincerely hope that people will see joining this church is nothing at all like any church they imagine from the real world. I am still very open to contact from other guildheads for increased synergy and the building of a more palpable community of inter-related guilds.
[I seriously need someone with some web design talent even if someone wants to come on just for that purpose it would be appreciated]
I have died.  Reborn into the light of Laanx, her will has led me to my new place among the Vespers.
I will rule the Vespers with compassion as my guide.  May we all learn from Xillix's wisdom and may the kindness of Laanx touch us all.
But what happened to Xillix and where has she gone?
Is the organization going to change any?
[As you may have already noticed, Xillix is now part of the dev. team (go Xillix!) and as such it she can no longer lead a guild (as stated by the guild rules). The choosing of a new leader indicates that the guild will go on. Of course, new leadership always brings a share of changes, we'll have to sit back and see. In any case, congrats Shalmaneser and good luck on the new job.]
In game, Xillix will continue to be seen from time to time, and she is still a member of the guild.  If you want to know her reasoning behind things - or her current state of mind - you might want to do it IC by tracking her down in game.
The structure of the guild will most likely be unchanged.  I will however encourage certain individuals to take more active roles in the guild, and I want to set up a liason program with other guilds.  I've also found that the Vespers have created a sort of literary tradition within the guild, and I think that it wouldn't be such a bad idea to collect such things and create a book out of it.  Much of it will be Psalms, but there are other types of documents as well.
Yay for that! I was hoping there would be more of that sort of thing around! \\o// Good luck with it!
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(
