Static Sound Effects on Mac Os X Only?
« on: July 25, 2006, 04:30:14 am »
Anyone else on Mac OS X getting static when sound effects are attempted to be played.

I have seen a few reports on bugtracker saying that Mac OS X ONLY has this problem. I have this problem as well.

Does anyone else have it, and maybe a fix other then disabling sound effects.

Common problem... no fix as of yet. I think dfryer's vaguely working on it... we'll see what happens next release. ;)

No, there are some on Windows complaining about this too.  It's mostly fine for many, so we think it might just not like some systems or something.  Though, it may be worse on Mac.  Not sure.  We need to poke Rhad to look into this more.

Awesome. Only Music/Combat Music and a few ambience noises work. I tried switching all the .eff files (which didn't work) into ogg files, havent tested them out yet.

Well, I just got on and got the static.  So I got off.  went to pssetup and turned the sound off.   Much better without the sound but after killing a rogue or two, my
inventory suddenly was blank!  No trias, no weapons, no armor, no nothing.   At least  my skills and stats remained the same.

Well I finally got back on and there is one change.  No stats and no skill levels.   Zero in everything.  Amazing that an Enki is standing in the hall way.

a few minutes later my stats and skills are back!   And my inventory returned to normal.   Hmmmmmmm.   Intersesting what  the Gods of PS can do.

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Just for the devs info, I checked in the console and seems to have something to do with the coreaudio. It could be that the sound card doesn't like it, but I just went through the music files and they are all ogg files. Some work, yet some dont. So it has to have something to do with the core audio.

PS: Eff sound files arent regonized by my comp at all.

Our EFF files are glorified XML files.  Open them up in a text editor.

I wouldn't expect anything to be associated with them in any OS.  They're PS specific.

I think the actual effect sounds themselves are .wav -style files.  The problem (we assume) lies in either the sound system (in which case it's a general bug that is exposed on OS X) or in my implementation of the coreaudio driver in Crystal Space.
