People with installer crashes
« on: August 03, 2006, 04:54:05 am »
I'm trying to work out why these are happening for some people and not for others. Anyone who experiences a _installer_ crash, can you post the dump file and your system specs here please?

Can those people also try this dummy installer and tell me if it crashes?

Ok great. Everything is fixed then. I probably won't update the current binary, but the next one will work fine (hopefully) for everyone.

just for completeness (answered your pm allready):
test1: does not crash, but cannot complete through exit script failure
test2: runs fine

I reported the bug before. It crashes with the proprietary fglrx rubbish and doesn't crash with the free r300 driver. It happened with the game installer as well as the test installer. The problems with fglrx started after upgrading my debian/sid to Xorg 7.0. Some other programs crash as well.

Perhaps it might be interesting, which driver and Xorg version people are using.

I was getting the error with the opensource nv and proprietary nvidia drivers on my geforce cards... so I don't think it had anyhting to do with fglrx... maybe but I doubt it.  I'd think that the driver change was changing something with X that made it work correctly.

mhhh interesting point.

when occured the installer problem i was using the fglrx drivers for x.
During my conversion to modular x i lost them temporary, so my last test (resultiung in an cleen install with the test.bin) are based on other drivers.

I'll give it a try with the old installer to check that.

Okay, if the problem exists with nvidia as well there must be something else.

Your assumption about changing the driver corrects somthing about X somewhere else, doesn't make sense to me. I have some sort of dual installation of both drivers, which i created with netenv. Now I can choose the driver in the grub menu. Therefor the driver must have an influance.

In X somewhere else, I meant a problem in the mesa opengl implementation.

Ok, I've reuploaded the installer.

http://download.xordan.com/PlaneShift_CBV0.3.015b.bin

The errors should be fixed now, let me know how it works!

Thanks for the new installer, Xordan. I haven't tested it yet but i will try it tomorrow.

If you want to save Xordan some bandwidth you can also get the installer through:
wget -c http://xrl.us/pslinux315b
wget -c http://xrl.us/pslinux315bmd5  (for the md5sum)
(the option -c is to tell wget to continue the download if it gets interrupted. Of course you can use another downloader of your choice, too)

Hey thank you for the quick reply..........I typed in what you said.......just copy and paste it right into the console after i changed to root and this is what I got....

AN13GYKW36:/opt/planeshift# chmod -r 777 /opt/planeshift
chmod: cannot access `777': No such file or directory

As you can probably guess Im a linux noob.......I did see the option to give permission to users when I installed the game but Im not sure how to do it.  I only have 3 users.  Admin  Justin Holly.

If I wanted to give access to just Justin when Im installing the game as root/admin what would I type in when it asks if i want to give permissions?

thanks for all your help.

hmm, you would put

justin:games as the user:group and 700 as the permissions I think.
