A Simple List of Wishes ;)
« on: August 07, 2006, 09:53:35 pm »
I am going to try to keep my wish list concise, and only limited to things that are already basically implemented in the game mechanics. I am posting these not under my regular account because I do not want to get screeched at in game. I am sure that somebody has already considered each one of these, so this is for what its worth. I am not going to argue with anyone about these in this thread, it is just FYI for the team and a one-off post -- I will accept the game in whatever form it finally reaches, for it is a beautiful thing! 8)

1) Wipe the characters! The world is full of power-levelers and others who exploited downs in the NPC server to build massive progression points. Platinum was a debacle and added to the problems. Guilds have shared information all over the place and keep many things posted on their websites. The whole "not sharing" outside PS thing is basically a farce right now if one is in a guild -- with regards to existing things that have not changed. I am just saying that I personally cannot wait for the wipe. I have practiced now building from nothing a few times, and I actually seem to know how to play the game itself. But it is the will of Talad, and no mortal should second guess him so I will be patient.

2) Remove the /die command. There are plenty of places to fall to your death, but personally I prefer charging an Ulbernauth with a first level character. Maybe this could be implemented where you attack yourself with or without your weapons equipped? This way a character could pummel themselves to death slowly and it would be more interesting and humorous that way -- albeit darkly humorous. ;>

3) Remove /tell command. Having this affects the game in significant ways. Secrets can be communicated directly player to player. The game already supports finding a quiet place to hold a private conversation and that should be the way of it. You cannot /tell an NPC anything if you are not standing near him, and that makes perfect total sense but should apply to players. This also affects the general RP skills of the players, as /tell will be used for OOC discussions.

4) Remove /guild command. Having this affects the game in a couple of significant ways. Secrets can be communicated directly guild member to guild member regardless of distance. Guilds should be locating meeting places and striving to keep the privacy of their information, and from having their conversations overheard. The /guild channel becomes a conduit for information that is out of place. If you are at the Bronze Doors and meet an NPC, information about that NPC can be communicated to you directly. One should have to go back to town and meetup with people in order to gain information, just like with NPCs. This also affect the general RP skills of the players, as /guild will be used for OOC discussions.

5) Randomize travel areas. For instance, going to the Magic Shop you walk into the forest, it loads you in there and you continue on. Instead of loading you directly to the main road it should have a chance of loading you into a very small area that links to the forest or back to the point you left the previous level, but could contain bandits or nothing depending on the roll. I would not say that should be done on the path to the Magic Shop specifically, but there is not much danger just travelling the roads right now as there should be in this kind of a setting.

6) Guards in Hydlaa city that do something when people walk around with their weapons drawn. Maybe warn them once then put them in the gaol? Or fine them Tria automatically! The game needs to reinforce the characters, rewarding them for basic good behavior, and penalizing them for bad. Something like this would promote the idea of consideration of others in game.

7) Although the furnace is good for it, how about trash cans that just destroy anything put into them? There tends to be a lot of garbage laying around. I know there is probably a garbage-collection process going on, but things seem to stay around until a server reboot. Perhaps we will be able to build campfires eventually that will incinerate low-level objects?

8) I was solicted by someone the other day who gave me a URL of their current shop stock for any glyph I want, up to 50K tria for the rarest. Probably it would be too hard to take care of things like this, but it is really unfair to a lot of the players who are starting out and really want to work their way up. Although it won't stop them from doing so, the power-levelers tend to crowd out the good RP and honest newcomers, and things like this encourage those who just want to 'own' PS. Is it possible that there are people converting real world currency to tria in game and giving decidedly unfair advantages?

9) This one is reaching beyond game mechanics right now probably ... but how about Group follow and Formation commands? Leader would assign a formation pattern for a group who would follow in pattern. Only for movement and to setup distribution prior to attacks. Character actions would still be individual and a character could move out of formation (but perhaps that would break formation for all and they would have to reform). If an individual ran out of physical stamina they would drop from the formation and have to catch up with the group when rested.

That's it, I appreciate your time and consideration. If these make anyone mad, I am not sorry. The devs will decide. Talad is wise! He sees all! He moves amongst us and judges those who are not true! The final wipe is coming ... how about lets do it on a Saturday morning about 5am CST when I have time free to play for 48 hours straight and rebuild, okay? ;)

I can understand /die being in there for debug. But it is being abused. If you had to beat yourself to death to get to the DR it would definitely become less abused as a character gained in strength. Also, it would make the character look silly. Thanks.

1: *shrugs* Like you said yourself, anyone with 48 hours of spare time is going to be a god again anyways. Wipes are needed to get rid of certain items, but in the end, only place powerlevelers higher on the food chain.

2: Hmmm. No. I died just two days ago while in a roleplay by 'taking' poison, and escaping into the DR. Die is abused, no doubt, as in the same RP, someone /died to take a trip to Oja for supplies. It is going to happen. This game is still young yet, and the DR is still small. In time, there is talk of using the DR purposefully as a 'shortcut' to far away places. But that will be after the rez in place of death is implemented, as detailed...hmmm....can't remember where. Then you will have to find a 'living' gate to go through.

3: Absolutely not. /tell is key in controlling roleplays in the game. I would be lost without it. Removing it would not do anything anyways, as there are hundreds of ways to communicate outside the game. MSN anyone? Besides, /tell is not that easy to use right now.

4: Does it really matter so much what 'secrets' NPCs have? The quests are a sideshow in a game like this. Until they are much vaster, and involve many players at once, I see no point in having such a tight hold on them. Also, see #3.

5: That would be ok for a magical forest full of tricksy Pixies...but not well trodden pathes. In face, I think the roads need to be easier to follow. Random mob ambushes would be a much better way to toss in some excitement on the roads. The magic forest is a thought to keep in mind, though. Perhaps something for the DR?

6: Agreed. Or automatically sheath/draw weapons if not fighting or not, or in certain areas. Auto toss out of the Tavern would be nice too.  I do go tired of seeing all the children running about with scissors. ;)

7: Then what would the rats eat? Just kidding. Places to toss trash would be nice. What of these 'waste ducts' I've been hearing about in the settings? I have yet to see one. :)

8: We need more features for roleplayers. That is all there is too it. Things that can be gained by your character only, through your actions alone. The greatest asset I have found ingame can not be bought. Friends. And frankly, I am against leveling being the focus of the game.

9: Ummmm......

10: that have been talked about. It would be quite useful at times....abused at others. Just like all the other features. :)

Thanks Under the moon, for taking the time to write. Going to respond to a couple of points by following the numbers...

1. Sigh, I suppose you are right. You would think -- since the game is based off of balanced mathematics -- that there would be some way for the GMs or the server itself to know when a character was imbalanced and correct it. Much like the strip in NWN...

2. Okay, I see what you mean when it comes to RP. One wants to be able to die. Agreed.

3. Well, there are hundreds of ways outside of Planeshift to communicate, but nobody is walking around out here with their player name and phone number over their head so I do not know to immediately whisper in their ear from a distance. I saw posts about that floating name feature maybe going away, so maybe that is better. I understand what you mean about RP, you sound like you are probably very skilled at RP and know best.

5. What I meant was: Imagine the path from Hydlaa to the Magic Shop. Imagine leaving the Hydlaa area and loading over to the forest path. Right now you leave Hydlaa and appear in the forest. But what if there was a chance that you went to a small area that had a chance of a random encounter, but you could still go back to Hydlaa or on to the Magic Shop. Think Baldur's Gate and getting waylaid. The intermediate area would still be part of the map, not some magical otherworld with pixies drinking beer and getting rowdy. :)

6. Keep those weapons sheathed. I could ask for peace-bonding on the weapons too, but that WOULD be too much trouble...

7. Yes, yes, ducts down into the under dark! Maybe even just taking the trash and dumping it into the mouth of the stone head ... which goes nowhere right now. When I jumped down there the first time I was kinda hoping for a fall into darkness followed by the DR...

8. Yes, the game it about friends and we need more RP support. I love the people I meet in game and cannot emphasize how much fun it is to interact in the world. At least with most of the players I have met. Thank you all...

9. Think party control in Baldur's Gate. Okay, so it just popped into my mind when I wrote out the first ones, and is probably stupid because everybody is controllling their own characters. But I floated it ... put me in the stocks and throw rotten vegetables at me. WAIT! How about a stocks setup in the plaza for bad characters who never sheath weapons...

10. I thought I only went to 9, but that is probably my bad editing.

Thanks again! And I am not kidding when I say ... Praise Laanx! Hail Talad!

Actually, after messing around in game a bit more, I still think /tell could be removed. The scenarios you are speaking of Under the moon should be run by you as a GM or just a Group leader. Tells could be the province of a GM, Group Leader or a PC with a special item. It would encourage people to group. But there might then want to be a /whisper command that would allow people to speak quietly to one another, with people a little ways away just hearing [whisper]s. Thanks again!

There might be other situations in which a tell command might be needed... for example, tells were used in the battle against Daehaz recently, where he used tell to tell people when they were possessed. If tell were removed, either everyone would know (which isn't supposed to happen) or, if there was a whisper command, he'd have had to run up to people in order to tell them they were possessed, which might also lead people to suspect. So, when private information needs to be given at a distance, tell is the only way to do it.

Also, the problem with the group thing is that without tell the person you're grouping with won't be able to know why you want to group, and might refuse.

1 - A player wipe wouldn't be half bad... set everybody back at the start. Levels wouldn't matter to those who are focused on the verbal RPing in game, but it would severely annoy those who enjoy playing the game for the sake of knowing that they are better than others in stats.

2 - I think the /die command is a MUST have for the basic fact that there are still many, many instances where the game glitches or the programing doesn't work as perfectly as it should. A little while back I fell off of a point that when I hit the ground there shouldn't even be enough pieces to send to the DR because they would be sent so far in every direction, but I was in perfect health yet about 1000M below any point that I could move from/to. I was stuck, /unstick only dropped me into the same point so suicide was the only option.

3 - The /tell command is a great method of quieting down the messages that can be overheard/ distracting. I say keep it because it keeps things quiet and more simple. It doesn't matter if people are telling eachother the secrets of the universe or if they are RPing, let them be.

4 - Removing the /guild command would almost completely thrash any point of being in a guild besides being in a kill-party with a special name. If you don't like guilds talking amongst themselves, don't join a guild.

5 - Random travels, no. More expancive and longer travels, sure why not. Random travels would become very annoying and it would become a pain to go anywhere. More areas to travel to would be great because that would mean more areas to learn the paths and get lost in.

6 - The guards atomatically nailing you because you have a weapon out would become a bit out of hand in certain areas. Maybe you wish to RP and kill someone, maybe you just want to kill NPCs like rats and rogues that are within city limits. Loosing tria just because you get into a scuffle doesn't make sense to me.

7 - I could have sworn that trash only lasted a few minutes...

8 - P2P trade/sales shouldn't be stopped. It would stop players from being able to easily exchange wanted goods for services or goods in return. The only thing that would come of it would be people dropping items in trade for other dropped items.

9 - As for a /follow command that doesn't seem too logical for RPers. Have one be the guide while all others don't even need to be present to get from one place to the other. It would be great for a taxi service though...

10- There still isn't a number ten...
