Client ruined in transfer?
« on: August 08, 2006, 09:48:37 am »
i have bought a new computer and have transfered all the files off my old one onto my new one inlcuding the planeshift folder. For some reason now the apps dont work, not even the jar. updater. The client does start up though but the graphics are glitched and it quits on a log in attempt.

thanks for any help or suggestions...

Hello it might be you need to : from: A Guide to Running Planeshift on Mac OS X

3. Use the built-in updater to get the latest files: Double-click the file updater(.app) in your Planeshift 3D folder. Once it finishes launching, click "Update," sit back and relax (you're in for a pretty long wait).

If it doesn't work, you'll have to do the following:
First, open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal(.app)). In the new Terminal window, type "cd " (note the space " " after "cd"). Then, in the Finder, locate your "Planeshift 3D" folder, drag it into the Terminal window, and drop it there (text should appear after "cd "). Click inside the Terminal window and then press return. Then type "./updater.app/Contents/MacOS/updater" and press return. The updater should run and you can then click the "Update" button at the bottom. Sit back and relax; you'll have a long wait.
 Hope this fixes it.
Glad to help.

Actually, it is possible that the files were copied with incorrect permissions and that they are not as they were before you copied them, so the applications are not applications but empty bundles. Reinstall from the .dmg file, use the updater and all should be well.

That sounds right: permissions often get messed up when you transfer to a new computer. Redownload the Java installer, wipe the previous installation (save any screenshots, logs, etc first!), then reinstall.

thanks for the help. i re-installed the .dmg file which made it work a little better but i still couldnt log on. I think it was because the mac os system was not updated for a while but now it works fine.

cheers.

I have had zero problems with the Mac client under 10.4.6 and 7 with 512 megs of RAM (apparently I need to relight the Bronze Doors area but no big deal). However, one thing puzzles me. When I run the updater, almost every time it says no updates are available, and then Checking for missing/damaged files. It then downloads a bunch of zip files again. This makes me feel better, so I do it often. But someone said that I should delete some zip files and run the updater again to get rid of this condition. I don't feel like killing files willy-nilly in the installation, would I just kill the zips being referenced by the updater or what? Thanks, again and again ...

Well, if you relight things, the zip files change and it thinks it needs to redownload them. It's actually a bit annoying. You can try deleting the zips (it won't cause any problems, as the updater can actually fetch the entire game from scratch), but other than that, all I can say is that the updater is just downright weird sometimes. :P
