Weird install problems..........please help
« on: August 09, 2006, 04:19:17 am »
ok ill make this quick and as simple as  posible............

AMD 64x2 3800+
1 gig ram
xandros 4.0
(if you need anymore info Ill be happy to supply it)

Ok basically I unpack it. and do a ./ as root user and install it.  It seem to install fine and asks me all the options.  I elect to have it install system wide putting files in /usr/bin/ and to have it add icons to the desktop and launch button.  And it seems to install fine but when its done no icons are installed.  If i go to the opt/ folder and click on any of the exes i get this errer in the console:

this is logged in as admin.....   I try to run pssetup

/opt/planeshift/pssetup: line 5: /opt/planeshift/pss: cannot execute binary file
/opt/planeshift/pssetup: line 5: /opt/planeshift/pss: Success

Press <ENTER> to continue...

Is there a sequence as to what files I need to execute?  damn im lost when this seems to be a very easy install.

if you are going to install as root, make sure when you get to the option that says do you want to set permisions  manually, go ahead and do so - .. .but you have this option as well.  as root:  chmod -r 777 /opt/planeshift   or whatever directory you chose to install planeshift in.

Hey thanks for the quick reply.......I copy and pasted what you said to do but it failed to work or I typed it in wrong..........here it is......

justin@XAN13GYKW36:~$ su
Password:
XAN13GYKW36:/home/justin# cd /opt/planeshift
XAN13GYKW36:/opt/planeshift# chmod -r 777 /opt/planeshift
chmod: cannot access `777': No such file or directory

I am the only user of this computer and as far as I know the only user accounts are admin and me/Jusitn.

If i were to reinstall the game what would I use to give the Justin account full access so that even the icons would install on the desktop?

Ive only been running linux a couple weeks but so far I love it.  I cannot belive they have a free mmorpg........it looks good.

We really need Xordan for this one - he created the bins :D     If you want you can download this version:  http://vaalnor.mine.nu/Downloads/planeshift_cb_.3.015b.run    IT works a bit different than xordans and in most cases is inferior, but I've made it for the few cases Xordans installer doesn't work.

To use:   downlad - then change its permissions to be executable just like Xordans.  Then run the file. When it asks if you want to run the updater to fetch art choose no - you've got the art in the version from xordan - we'll get that in a mi nute.  When it is done you should have a folder named planeshift in your home directory.  Once you've located this new planeshift dir, open it, then open /opt/planeshift, and copy the art directory over (copy not move) into the new planeshift directory.  Then, just to be sure run updater in this new planeshift directory.  Once its finished try running pssetup then psclient.

But like I said, this isn't anything official or anything - and Xordans should work, its just that he may be the one who recogonizes the issue.  You can try mine in the mean time, it doesn't overwrite Xordans install or anything - mine doesn't even create menu entries :D

Did you install the right 'bitness' of planeshift? I believe that Xandros is 32-bit only, so you must select '32-bit' for that option.

hmm, well that's progress :) You have a different problem now though... it seems that Xandros uses a very old version of glibc, too old for planeshift. PS should require 2.3.3 (although that says 2.3.4 for some reason... I figure what I used is patched and that they're binary compatible), and what you have is 2.3.2.

Basically, all that means that you can't run PlaneShift with Xandros until they update their glibc version (I would suggest you contact xandros support if you bought it), or unless you compile yourself (difficult to do).

Xandros is 32-bit only, so you won't be able to run 64-bit programs on it, even though you have a 64-bit processor. It doesn't make too much difference, but that's the reason for your last problem. Having a 32-bit only distro can actually be an advantage right now, as it's much better supported.

There is the option of switching distro, to something like Ubuntu which is very nice.

And if you decide to go with the 64 bit version of ubuntu, or any other distro,  look into this: http://www.gibix.net/projects/nspluginwrapper/

It is a plugin wrapper that lets you use 32 bit plugins on your 64 bit system which is nice for instance if you want to have the flash plugin on 64 bit linux.

I wouldn't call it old.
It is the one included in debian stable so there for any debian based distro would include it as well.
Is there any specific reason for compiling against 2.3.3 or am I able to compile it under 2.3.2?
I'm doing a CVS checkout tonight and will try overnight to compile it on Xandros.

debian stable is old and decrepit, so yes it's old :) The reason for compiling against 2.3.3 is ease of use with keeping compatibility with the majority of distros (no major ones base off debian stable). I did look at using debian for it, but it was a lot of effort due to crashing (yeah, debian isn't so stable), getting things setup, and either having to use a VM or multibooting. I would also have to include the bloated libs that apt contains which I don't want to do. Instead, I just installed two instances of gentoo in two chroots in my normal OS (didn't take very long), everything went smoothly, I have the sleek minimal libs needed and I don't have to continually reboot or have a VM running. I can even script the whole process so I can click and go with the setup I have now. There's no reason why you can't use 2.3.2 to compile with though.

Congratulations.
I did not think your userbase was large enough where you could alienate and possibly personally insult thousands of possible users, but I guess you proved me wrong.
Unfortunalty I'm not ready to compromise on my O/S of choice so I bid you farewell and which you good luck on expanding your userbase.

Bye :) (*notes that lots of debian stable users have got the binaries running by updating their glibc version from apt, which is said in one of the sticky posts*)
