[Guild] Merchant
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:43:05 pm »
Guild name: Merchant

Guild Founder: Orac Coone

[will be founded soon]

Description:
The Merchant guild will consist of players who will mainly buy, sell, and transport goods to help maintain the economy of Yliakum, hopefully creating a network of trade between the cities of Oja and Hydlaa. It will be primarily a loosely connected group of individual merchants who communicate with each other to better understand the total economic layout of the land.

For example, one Merchant is near the blacksmiths and overhears that Crafters need iron and steel. He guild chats what they need and then other merchants who may be near a mine will know there is a place to sell the ore and can buy from the miners there.

Merchants are encouraged to have useful skills such as weapon repair or mining, metallurgy or anything else. The main point being that you are willing to buy, sell and trade with other players regularly. There will be a big <Merchant> over your head so be ready ;) .

========
Alignment:

Merchants obey the laws of the land in regard to taxes and such [there will be no guild taxes because hopefully we will get profits from our trades] and will ALWAYS carry out a transaction as honestly as possible, if need be, err on the side of generosity.

Avoid dealing with evil or outlaw guilds or characters because they are likely the kind of people to prey upon hapless merchants in the wilderness or trade routes. Don't help them out!
==========

Role Playing:

Be in character as much as you feel like, that’s always a good thing. But don't let that stop you from helping others out if they have in-game questions.

Try to help out new players when possible. Show them where to kill rats and then offer to buy parts from them; this will help them get started without needing to rely on freebies. If you have a bunch of rat parts, see if you can get another merchant or a new player to sell them at the proper NPC merchant or find a use for them.

If newbies start telling you "Give me a quest" try not to go nuts. Give them a simple but decent quest and maybe get them to help you out, [such as, "go sell these health potions to the lady on top of the bar" if your inventory needs cleaning out]. Try to coordinate these quests with fellow merchants.

========

Ranks:

Apprentice Merchants- Members who are first being introduced to the guild, they are encouraged to develop their skills and learn the ways of commerce in the land. Also be ever ready to buy or sell when around other players.

Trade Route Merchant- A merchant with generally has fixed routes they travel to carry goods. They must train their strength and endurance to carry loads great distances. They generally work with other merchants to ensure that there is a market for what they carry.

Public Merchants- Merchants who generally stay in specific spots to buy and sell. They best coordinate with other merchants to have items delivered to where they are best sold. They are skilled at dealing with customers in either buying or selling an item.

Guild Coordinators: A group of high ranking members of the Merchants Guild, They do not really command those beneath them but are in charge of ensuring that deals have been properly carried out and that the rules of the land have been followed. They are in charge of adding, promoting, and expelling members in the guild. They do this in addition to whatever merchant activities they normally do.

Guild Recorder: The member in charge of maintaining the guild web page.

Guild President: The member who primarily represents the Merchants guild, this is an elected position determined by all members of the guild. They mainly speak with leaders of other guilds if there are a major market for certain services. This is an unpaid position.

* Any suggestions on how to improve it will be appreciated*

History:

After a great deal of time spent seeking his fortune in Hydlaa, the Enkidukai known as Orac began to work though many jobs such as trading animal hides or mining precious minerals. After a while it was discovered that the ancient secrets of crafting were being revealed! As the economic balance began to shift, the Enkidukai quickly searched for others to join him. Others who wished to make thier fortunes and hopefully could work together to improve their economy.

Meanwhile, as the Enkidukai and the others around him moved about, seeking their own individual goals... an Invisible Hand was at work, nudging and guiding them, urging them to solidify their trade routes and to help the crafters create and maintain their weapons. Whle beyond the Bronze Doors monsters lurked... when they opened another shift would take place, one determined by the weapons made now.

*History could use work, the Invisible Hand is a metaphor used by the politcal economist Adam Smith, more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_hand*

I currently have the tria to form the guild and am seeking 5 members to start it off with. The guild should be formed on Saturday the 12th. Any feedback on improving the guilds layout would be appreciated. After it is formed, we may see about creating a web-page. Mainly as a medium to keep track of item prices, maps, and such. Anyone with experience with this is welcome to join.

I strongly suggest you join the Union of Vaalnor. If you're starting this guild out of a desire to be a good merchant rather than to be some sort of boss, then it's better to strengthen some other merchant guild. By creating yet another poorly thought-out competitor in the merchant arena you will be doing more harm to the economy than good. By joining a more organised and established group you can bring great good to others and great wealth to yourself.

I'm not too fond of these generic names popping up lately Yeah, they do an excellent bland job of explaining what the guild is about, but you have so much opportunity to create something more exciting. I'd suggest that you do just that.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Come now, Karyuu. Surely you must admit that this guild stirs the imagination? Why, the very name conjures up colorful images of... a merchant.  ;D
